What was it about the first game that was just so fucking offbeat and cool? The weird characters, Frank's ugly character model, killing zombies inside a bright and cheery mall environment while elevator music plays, the dozens of secrets and hidden items/areas, just everything. All the other games seem to try and give you more of the same, but they lack the charm of the original. Being able to make your own weapons is cool, but it detracts from the experience of actually finding weapons and looking for new ones, and the characters in later games just seemed lame as shit compared to those in DR1.
Dead Rising 2 is the best Dead Rising game.
it has the same vibe as hotd or illbleed, george romero filtered through anime tropes
it has that japanese touch

It's really not though. It lacks the music, atmosphere and characters of the original and all it really adds are a gaudy UI and the ability to make a few weapons.
Because they wanted you to pick up nearly anything to use it as a weapon against the zombies. Good weapons were rare and leveling up to the point of being able to tear them apart with your own hands was great.
Dead Rising 2 was fun, but the weapon crafting really killed it. Instead of scavenging for tools to kill zombies with, combo weapons were overpowered and plentiful. Hell, most items to make combo weapons are literally within hands reach from each other.

Yep, exactly. Part of the fun in DR1 was learning the spots that good weapons would spawn and taking advantage of it. There were so many times in DR1 that I had to make decisions like, "Hmm, I won't waste this Uzi on this group of zombies, I'll just use the katana to cut through a few of them and save the Uzi for the psycho up ahead". I rarely made those kind of decisions in DR2 because you can make a bunch of overpowered shit from the get-go.

Or exploring jump puzzles to get rewarded with good weapons.
DR2 was just waiting for more inventory slots so you can bulk make everything

This. It was quirky, and they had details in weird little places that didn't need to be there. It was silly and tongue in cheek.

This, it's literally pathetic nostalgia that dictates you can only like the first one and I just don't get it.
>i-it just doesn't FEEL right
Yeah probably because it plays so much fucking better.
