Japanese has more speakers worldwide than German and just a little less than Russian.

As far as languages go, it is very much Linqua Franca tier.
Also, it sets you up for an easy time learning Chinese which does make English look like a dead language in comparison by the number of speakers and future prospects.

Also, I fucked up on the comparison with Russia, that must have been natives only.

Simply put, German is a complete meme language in comparison. Especially considering that you can get by working any IT related job in Germany as an English speaker and will never consume German media.
It's a no-brainer.

An assload of people speak Japanese because there's an 127 million of them. That doesn't make it lingua franca. Lingua franca is the bridging language, not the language the only Nips and weebs speak. English is lingua franca, Greek used to be lingua franca, Japanese is not.

You're forgetting a shitload of people in Eastern and South Eastern Asia as a whole who tend to take it as their 2nd foreign language since working in Japan is a very favorable proposition to them (you're going to slave yourself no matter the country in that part of the world, except Japanese will actually pay you accordingly). Heck, if you ask them about gaijin, they'll more than likely start talking about the Chinese and Koreans, not whites who are about as rare as unicorns.

I also have a hard copy of genki at home, but I agree with you on that point that it's easier and more convenient to find five minutes on the phone at work or whatever.

Going by your own statistics that accounts for a whopping 1 million people. Even so, they're all just immigrants trying to work in the land of the rising sun. An Indian who doesn't know Japanese is going to have better luck trying to converse with a Jap in English than in Japanese, that is what lingua franca is about.

I downloaded their shitty app just to give it a try (since the PC platform takes so long to develop for apparently) and even with minuscule understanding of the language I just tested out of half of it in 20 minutes. Not to mention, furigana and vocab are mixed so you either have to sit through a ton of lessons on stuff you should already know or miss a few key words that will be in later lessons.

I learned the same way, although I didn't do the full 6k. Just start reading VNs, or any game that you can run through a text hooker (emulators sometimes struggle with this). You will pick up the basic grammar pretty quickly now that you don't have to check every new word in a dictionary.

As others have said, Tae Kim and the equivalents are useful, but I found it hard to study grammar in isolation. It's better to just read and look things up when you get confused.

I'm planning on doing that very thing this weekend. Can you recommend a good text hooker? And by that, you mean something like KanjiTomo, right?

Is there any thing like a phone app that allows you to take pictures of kanji and attempts to translate it that way? I bought a couple hard copies of books to give me some motivation, but it's going to be a loooooong time before I can read 吾輩は猫である even with a dictionary in hand.

Then it's up to you and what you prefer. Generally the same shit applies that applied to you learning English if you're one of us non-Anglos. Immersion with the language teaches you the main shit but you can't learn stuff by it alone so going through the grammar alongside it is required.

>True for the major cities/tourist hubs, but he'd be fucked anywhere else.
You missed the point. I said he'd have better luck. They teach English in Jap schools regardless if nobody actually learns. India used to be a British colony. That's not to say that both can speak English, but if they were to attempt to converse together in the same language immediately after meeting then their best bet would be in English.
127 million Japanese speakers all endemic to Japan aren't lingua franca to anyway. The 450 million English speakers endemic to their own countries wouldn't make them lingua franca on their own, just like how the 1 billion Mandarin speakers are all dirty Chinese and all contained in China. It's the fact that figures for ESL range from 450 million to 1 billion and it's your best bet as a language to try and converse with someone if neither of you speak the same language.

Yes and no. It gives a much higher readability rate than Atlas, and it does actually give complete sentences, unlike atlas where it most of the time gives you vague words in near random order and you form the sentences from that.
But google fucks the pronouns hard for some reason, it's almost the opposite pronoun each time. But I just use Atlas or context to supplement that.

Chinese could be neat but I'm going with Japanese as it has a good number of uncanny similarities with my native language (now that's the real useless and dying out territory).

Chinese would be most likely easier but considering I'm most likely never going to live in an English, Chinese or Japanese-speaking country, my only real use for foreign languages is the media and that's where Japan dominates China heavily and will for quite a while still. Worst come to worst, Japanese will dub the good Chinese stuff, and there's really no competition for their VAs no matter where on Earth you look.

I use Chiitrans Lite. It should work automatically with older VNs. For new VNs and emulators you would have to look up guides.

>Is there any thing like a phone app that allows you to take pictures of kanji and attempts to translate it that way?
That's OCR, which I don't know much about. Paper books are pretty hard to deal with. Whenever I read an interview or something on paper, I just look up kanji by radical on Jisho. But that would be annoying for a full novel.

It's the opposite for me. The way grammar works, with the character saying what the word before it is in the sentence makes grammar easy for me - it's just learning the vocab that I'm struggling with. Once I learn what the word actually means, then I realize that I can't recognize the kanji, just the anki flash card. It's like i'm studying the answers to the test and am not actually learning.
>>
I love it when people who don't know Japanese claim it's easy to learn Japanese. Becoming fluent in a language takes YEARS of intense study as well as spending significant time in the country where it is spoken natively practicing communication. There is a reason why you haven't done it.

No one's saying you can realistically pass for a native in 2 moths or bullshit like that.

Some languages are easier than others, though.
English being one of the easiest ones around. If you removed the French cum left on their lips when pronouncing shit, it would downright look like something made by a computer.

Japanese has a fuckton of English loanwords, strict and not all that complicated inclension system. Almost no tenses to speak of. And best of all, the phonetics match up easily with Western languages, unlike all the other ching-chong get the tone wrong and tell me to fuck your own mother bullshit that is present from Korea to Vietnam.

except if you really want to understand japanese you have to grock with how jap words code for different lumps of ideas than the words in your language do. An easy example is ちる (chiru), which basically means fall, but you're supposed to picture how flower petals fall from cherry and plum trees and they use it for dying a lot. Or how they divide up three different words for "eat" that really only differ in the amount of contempt felt toward the subject (and there are a lot more specific words for "eat" on top of that).

What I'm trying to say is that converting anything well written between Japanese and English in either direction results in a bland "good enough" end result, or something that's similar to the original but stands really on the merit of its own original writing. There will always be by necessity changes to some nuance and details, and sometimes you can't know when those changes will bite you in the ass later.

tldr: even human level ai translation can only get to "good enough," 'cause of culture and stuff, learn more languages eop.

>What I'm trying to say is that converting anything well written between Japanese and English in either direction results in a bland "good enough" end result
That's true for most translations. If the subject is bland to begin with it's fine (eg instruction manual) but if it's multi-layered then good translations can be nearly impossible. You need a second book of footnotes to get across most translations of good literature.

Haven't played either of those, so I can't say, but from my experiences, the language in cards usually isn't all that rough. It's going to be a while, though.

>I don't speak Japanese, let alone read it. How do I start?

Realkana for kana

Then

Core 6k anki deck for vocabulary
Tae Kim/Genki for grammar

After finishing the grammar guide, start reading. A lot of people will point you to Yotsuba, but I'd personally suggest reading a VN that interests you with a text hooker. It's easier to look things up that way.

The rikaisama addon is also a must for Japanese learners.
