pass. last thing I want is that disgusting console exclusivity on the PC. it's bad enough we have origin, uplay, steam, window store, square.enix, rockstar social club, and many other drm clients. if some dev decides to only release their game for linux(doubtful this would happen, but who knows), I don't want to be forced to dual-boot, or VRM to play a game I like.

You'll either have to give up a lot of games or play games that are already linux compatible or install them through playonlinux. Lately playonlinux has been getting a lot of modern games running and it's not that bad. But, I personally like to dual boot and keep my games on Windows. It really helps to keep work stuff on Linux separate. Keeps you from getting distracted. I mostly use Linux for photoshop, writing, and music production in Renoise.
>>
Adoption of Linux might be higher if fans of Linux didn't have the "fuck off if you can't figure it out yourself" attitude.
>>
>>383901294
yeah and that is why you should dual boot.

>>
>>383901336
That's on this site. Communities for many distros are very friendly and have extensive wikis. And nowadays it's quite popular to design distros for "W10 refugees". Stuff like Mint or Zorin are very intuitive for Windows users.
>>
>>383901582
yeah outside of the newbie Linux distros, the people like fedora or the arch community expect that you contribute something to the distro, so if you keep asking questions, they will most likely ignore you or calling you parasite.
>>
>>383901582

That's good.

I'm using Windows at home right now (mostly because muh video games), but I really hope that people start moving away from Windows in greater numbers. I've gotten pretty comfortable with Linux at work so I'll probably dual boot my next PC.
>>
>>383901582
This, with WM's like KDE. When I first switched over I learned everything through KDE but didn't like how many animations there were and went with LXDE after a few months. Honestly, Linux is not hard at all to learn. The set up process is more straight forward than Windows 10 I'd say. And like the other guy said, outside of /not-friendlylinuxgeneral/ the community is very helpful.

What's wrong with me not consenting to having all of my data mined? If they want my data, they could offer me a small fee to waive my right, but they don't. And no matter how hard you try, Windows does some rootkit tier bullshit to keep you from disabling it.

Meanwhile, I can just use Linux. It's easier to customize, I can control what goes on my system, I can play most of the vidya I want to play just fine, and I can just boot into Windows if I need to.

Can you give me a benefit that Windows offers me that Linux does not? Because I can give you more reasons than vidya why Linux is better than Windows for me

Wrong. I used arch for a few years, and only installed Manjaro "just to try it lol." There are also many organizational issues that obstruct OSS development, Linux included. It's generally harder to make decisions in a group than as a dictator.

>>383903765
Linux isn't really more secure than Windows. It's really more a matter of scope than anything. No matter what malware, exploits, and bad users exist EVERYWHERE. One being more secure than the other is nothing more than anecdotal evidence. Malware exists for *nix, Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, Symbian, Xbox(yes), hard drives, and bios. No operating system is more secure than any other, the difference is in the number of attacks and scope of attacks. I can't believe you are this retarded. Please go shill about linux elsewhere.

You don't need to make the argument, it's already happened. The notion that open source means security vulnerabilities get found faster is utter crap, shellshock was there for literally fucking decades.

>What companies and governments want is for those flaws to be fixed as soon as possible, so that they can't be exploited by criminals to wreak damage on their systems. And yet we now learn that one of the first things that Microsoft does is to send information about those vulnerabilities to "multiple agencies" - presumably that includes the NSA and CIA. Moreover, we also know that "this type of early alert allowed the U.S. to exploit vulnerabilities in software sold to foreign governments".

Shitposting, arch babby damage control aside, I don't see anything fedora can offer any other distro does.

I don't think its package manager is doing anything spectacular different than apt-get, and I prefer aptitude or pacman. The fact that it is backed by Redhat but is apparently a "freedom-focused distro" gives me concerns. I also feel the focus on freedoms limits it. Although I seem to recall being impressed by the font rendering and polish for being a freedom focused distro.

I don't have anything against it. It just doesn't do ANYTHING for me personally
>>

you have to be straight up retarded to have Windows update in the middle of that. Like seriously this guy uses his OS for his profession and he's too stupid to reschedule an update? Please...
>>
I use linux since a long time ago, but seeing how lots of people here praise windows 8.1 so much and bash linux, I decided to try it. To my realisation this "windows 8.1 is good" thing is an elaborate troll; here are my reasons:

Just after finishing installing it I rebooted and noticed that it wrote over grub, thus forbidding me to boot my other OS's. Why would you even do that? Why doesn't it check if there are other OS's installed and let me choose?

After my first dissapontment I booted into my fresh windows 8.1 install and tried to install drivers for my gpu, after 5 minutes trying to find a package manager and some googling I understood that windows doesn't work like that! You have to go to the website of the GPU manufacturer to download drivers! WHY????!!!! Linux had package managers since before I had hair in my penis, how can windows, an OS made by a fucking billionaire corporation, don't have a simple package manager? I fucking had to use "internet explorer" (a fucking excuse to a good browser) to get a real browser!

And it doesn't stop there! you have to look online for every program you want, all have different installers that make you agree to some obscure legal documents and try to install shitware like toolbars all over your computer! And that's not all, if you want to update most of these programs you can't fucking click somewhere to update them all, you have to update each of them manually, lots don't even have a way of updating them so you have to go to their site and download the new version!

Also you can't do fucking anything with the "command line", it doesn't bring any of the famous coreutils available on all Linux distros and even Mac OSX! The command line is a fucking joke only made to show that their excuse for an OS could be useful.

After raging for a few hours I understood your trolling /v/ and will stay away from that piece of crap you faggots love to rice

Any popular distro is way ahead of Windows in terms of user-friendlyness

The future of gaming is virtualization with GPU passthrough. It's been becoming more and more popular in the last couple years. How is it that /v/ isn't all over this shit yet?

Soon you'll never have to install Microshaft malware on bare metal again. Make your Linux distro of choice the host OS and you contain Windows with all the games within a VM. Hardware compatibility is becoming less of an issue as well.

far more. with linux you have fully functional GUI for all ultra-casual users, and a single, consistent, supremely well-designed terminal interface for everyone else.

vs windows which is hard to even describe. two separate GUI systems, with core apps split evenly between them and many core apps having a subtly different versions for each. core apps split up and dumped all over the place (in the system hierarchy) that you need to google around to find out where (and they're ancient shit anyway, so you want to get modern 3rd party replacements). some apps still require terminal and each of those has entirely different interaction/syntax. barely anything is documented. they took out basic filesearch in favor of stealth-advertising web-search. tons of backwards compatibility cruft.

Nonsense.
For example, take Fedora. Its graphical software manager allows you to download KeePass. As in, the C# version. It doesn't work unless you launch it with very specific command line parameters to make Mono bend over because C# is such a piece of shit.
Meanwhile, the native KeePassX is in the repositories, so available via dnf, but not in the grpahical software manager.

I am a programmer, mainly with experience in developing video games, work tools, and mobile apps. I worked a lot on Linux, OS X and Windows. Let me give you some guidance.

Firstly, fuck Arch. You don't need that at all for what you want, and is definitely not the first thing you should be jumping to in any case.
Also, while Linux is a great development environment for most things if you can't afford a Mac (memes aside, whoever actually worked as a programmer on OS X knows it's pretty much the best in most cases), if you are even slightly serious about developing games, you won't be doing it on Linux. Hell, Unity don't even have a Linux version, so you would have to use wine just to run it and it wouldn't even run well. And Unreal 4 running on anything but Windows is absolute horseshit (slow and bugged, including on Mac). Like it or hate it, Windows is the ideal environment for developing games. It simply has the best compatibility.
>>
It's the other way around, devs don't want to go to linux because of the low installbase

Surprised by this hostility towards Linux here. A number of high-profile games have been ported over the last year including Hitman, Dirt Rally and Civ6. If you want a change from W10 and aren't too bothered about playing the latest blockbusters then I don't see the harm in giving it a try. The assertion that Linux users are autistic may not be far off the mark (I prefer to see it as having a deeper interest in computing), but I'm not sure video game players have the right to attack Linux users for this reason. I'd say the hardest part of making the switch is the install which can be quite daunting (though a breeze in hindsight). Once you're in (assuming you've picked a sane distro like Ubuntu), you'll find all the tools you'd expect with a terminal if you really need it. You can try it out with a live usb or, heck, if you don't want to go that far, set up the bash subsystem for Windows, pick up a scripting language and have some fun.

You have a couple of options. The developer may have provided a .deb, .rpm or compiled binary which are all very straightforward to use. The next option would be through a community repo (aur, copr or ppa), though I don't personally use this method. The final is to compile it. This may seem quite esoteric at first and I wouldn't blame anyone for being turned off by it, but once you have the tools (cmake, dev files), it's quite simple.

The PC crowd wasn't interested in paying a premium for something they already had in their households, and the console gamers weren't interested in essentially being a paying betatester for a future product in the slightest. Having a couple "official" models would've just shifted extra risk on Valve for essentially zero gain whatsoever, the free model offloaded most of it on the OEMs.

Valve's entire marketing strategy is letting the community shill for them free of charge, you can't shill something easily that isn't easily available. Without any actual marketing it wasn't going to get any traction anyway.

because windows, being based on dos in it's origin, only knows what kind of file it is by it's extension. linux/macos don't.

at some point during win95 development some retard at microsoft noticed "hey, my mac doesn't have extensions that make my files look ugly!", but since they can't be removed without requiring big changes down the line with repercussions for corporations and users (even if it would've been been the smart thing to do at this point) they just went ahead and chose the lazy option.

TLDR: microsoft wanted to be more like apple in the 90s and still does.

neither do windows or macos, so what was your point again...?
>>
>>383917335
if you look at it, it could've easily. android/ios/etc are locked down tight and the normies love it.

it failed for 2 reasons:
- it needed support from amd/nvidia to even be an alternative in speed and thus game deves, which cost money and given the userbase neither wanted to invest or work on
- zero oversight from valve in any regard, which meant companies could sell every shit as "steambox" which could range from gameboy-performance to 4k and valve being notoriously lazy and let the community do all the work while skimming money off the top - but with no community and no reason to switch, meaning no one would work on it..

the concept and idea was good, but the execution sucked balls and needed someone more invested than valve ever was.

Not that anon, but I have no trouble with synergy. I mean for simple stuff and non competitive games it works fine for me, but if you only play super competitive stuff then by all means synergy isn't going to cut it.

As for the question about the monitors I'm not sure I understand what's your problem. I have it set up to take over only one of my 2 monitors and with synergy it's almost as seamless as having dual monitors of the same OS. I know for a fact you can personalize it more like if you run 2 cables from each monitor and then you can switch OS by changing the source on each monitor.

I'm not going to try to convince you that it's all perfect. There are still some kinks that need to be ironed out, but I'm yet to run into any dead end with qemu and kvm. I even got a Vive headset to run in the virtualized windows after some google and trial and error.
It's probably not for everyone, but gpu passthrough is a legit option nowadays, and I find it way more convenient since I don't need to restart my PC any given time.

yes, why would they buy a console with multiple times the amount of games and players with no additional cost and an open ecosystem. shit, better buy a xbone with XBL for a year.

>Seriously the only group I can think that is for is console gamers who wanted to say they was PC users with out the need for any of the “work” that was involved.

except there was still work involved, which was my point. imagine it would've been as standardized and as easy to use as a console

probably patents and other stuff, ms has a shitload of those. see http://www.computerworld.com/article/2475440/android/microsoft-gets--2-billion-a-year-in-android-patent-fees--really-.html

service contracts they sell corporations and governments in addition to their volume licenses are probably counted under windows, 9% would be awfully high for software sales alone.

in fact, unless linux breaks sth due to some user modification after an update it's a much better option for the average normie that just uses it as a facebook machine and writes some simple shit. better security model means they can't break it as easily, not as common so less target, if configured properly you don't even need to update as often (unless there's really a serious issue).
