Why in Animal Crossing do the villager tap the door twice before entering? Is that some sort of Japanese culture or Northern US tradition? I'm from Florida and here we have doorbells

It's actually a free masonry thing.
What a weird thread

I'm from Florida and if you don't know of the concept of knocking, you are clinically retarded.
Yeah japanese have a lot of customs when it comes to privacy. For example they use these sliding doors for rooms and have no locks, you can just open them like you open a window sideways, but they don't need locks because japanese always knock before opening a door, it's a cultural thing.

Not OP, but yeah, while knocking is a thing in the west, we don't always follow that rule, especially if the other person is someone you know or live with, you just don't care, you open the door.
Japanese always knock. Always.

Unless someone lives with you and can get in, you would normally have your front door locked.

I've lived in places with doorbells. They are not universal.
