Never played a Digimon game. How are they? How is New Order or Cyber Sleuth?
Completely different from each other
CS is a modern persona esque jrpg
Next order is a vpet simulator
Both are good but I like digimon
CS is also getting a direct sequel very soon

I know some of the basic idea of it. Is there a story to it or do you just raise them until they died just to completely your sort of pokedex?

Might try it out.

NO has a story but its in the background most of the time, IMO it gets in the way sometimes, too many side characters you dont really need.
You are also rebuilding the city by recruiting certain digimons from the wild and you see it get bigger

CS is really good, but only if you can stand standard Jap filler dialogue.
As someone who thoroughly enjoys Digimon, I'd say it's a 8.5/10 or 9/10.
Ignoring my love for the series, I'd give it a 7.5/10.
Very solid game with a lot to it, but it also has it's fair share of flaws.
Next Order is a Digimon World game, raising pets, dying of old age, digivolving and de-digivolving to get stronger. Monster Rancher sort of deal, I hear.
Cyber Sleuth is a Digimon Story game, which is usually more of a standard rpg sort of deal with a Digimon overcoat and a few unique features to set them apart from the norm. Sometimes good additions, sometimes not.
Next Order is sequel to the original digimon world for PS1. It's a pet raising simulator, they'll eventually die and you'll have to retrain them while also exploring a fairly big world together with your digimon. It suffers from a very tiny budget but if you like pet raising games than it's pretty great. Cyber Sleuth is more like a traditional JRPG and the monster training is a bit like pokemon with more complex evolution paths. I'd say try cyber sleuth first, it's a bit easier to get into.
