the problem with making stealth and specifically DARKNESS realistic is that we simply would not be able to see all that well, ergo, not be able to control the game worth shit, in realistic darkness.
try stalker with a realistic night mod, or ultima 9, those tried it, and while realistic, it simply is not much fun.

It's there by design for the player, so when it's pitch black you'll still see where Sam is. And wether he is facing away from the camera (the one light on his back) or towards it (the three lights from his NV).
