RTS is an interesting one where nobody has really tried to improve upon it. They got it really right in design many years ago and either new developers have tried to "improve" upon them in game changing ways that actually make the RTS worse or less interesting or they realize that general interest in RTS has dropped so they don't even bother making one.

I think developers are entirely capable of making an amazing successor to games like command and conquer or supreme commander but they just choose to make games for more popular genres that make them more money, which is smart but unfortunate.

There are some RTS games that I am disapointed that didn't get more traction. Universe at War for example with 100% asymetical design between the different races.

Not sure what you mean. I finished the N-Sane Trilogy yesterday, and aside from the bridge level in Crash 1 being just as frustrating as the original even when abusing walking on the ropes, all in all it's a fucking top tier game. It made me truly wonder what the fuck happened to videogames nowaday, when a remake of old PS1 titles is far FAR superior to 90% of games released in the past decade.
