I have a question /v/. I've been lurking for years now and I've seen this game pop a fair bit over that time. I bought it on a whim and I'm not very good at 2d shooters but I'm enjoying it alright.

However, it feels like I'm doing a lot of arbitrary fetch quests. But it's almost like the game is making sure I realize how arbitrary these fetch quests are. Like getting the old lady's dogs, where she gives me a weird existential quote, then tells me how many dogs I have left to get.

I suppose I'll find out as I progress if this is on purpose or not, but could you tell me if you felt this too at the early stages?

Cave Story thread I suppose.

You can just run through and ignore side quests. By doing the side quests, you just trigger different endings or unlock new parts of the game.

And you definitely won't like Zelda if you hate those types of things.

You're just progressing with the story nigga. That's just a decent reminder and old lady attitude, I don't see any problems.

>>383875841
It's almost impossible to find the sidequests in your first playthrough anyway.
>>
>>383875841
There's side quests? I was under the impression there was just the main scenario. I haven't come across any side objectives yet.

I suppose you're right, but I quite like Zelda. But that's because I'm more comfortable with sword combat than I am shooting. Even after playing for an hour, this game exhausts me, that's just how bad I am at them.
>>
>>383876150
Jump at the red line.
>>
>>383876150
There's one parallel quest chain that you need to do to get to the infamous gauntlet section and the other ending, and some of the weapon choices require going off the beaten path for a bit, but other than that there's not a whole lot of sidequesting. Also Monster X is going to be all kinds of wonderful, but after that the game really picks up so be sure to push through it.
>>
Tell me Cave Story porn parody name.
>>
>>383876721
I think I already fought monster X, is he the giant tank thing? I just beat the core of the island and robotgirl is kill.

>>
>>383876993
Oh okay, I just figured you were still around the labyrinth since you talked about the dogs. Yeah, that's the guy, he had me sweating bullets the first time around.
>spoiler
Ignore the fags who say you should restart, just stick with it for now. The first playthrough is best experienced blind, revisit it later for the other ending.
>>
>>383876993
oh. well you can't get the secret ending now. just make sure you don't leave with Kazuma when he offers, that's the worst ending
>>
>>383877205
>just make sure you don't leave with Kazuma when he offers, that's the worst ending
It's worth it just for the novelty though, the save point is ten seconds away. I like how you don't even deserve to see the credits for doing that.
>>
>>383877194
>>383877205
Ah, I was under the impression it was just a bold narrative choice, but that's cool that it can just happen. Thanks anons, I'll push through.

Yeah I died a bunch to him, but I remember struggling against another boss more. I think it was the first one in the sand zone, but I can't remember what boss it was.

wtf man it's a freeware game
>>
>>383877683
He bought the remastered version.
>>
>>383877683
I bought the + version on switch for $30. Realized I got ripped off in retrospect after a friend told me it's $15 on steam. Oh well.
>>
>>383877781
For what it's worth, the original version from 2004 is still legally available and that costs a grand total of nothing. It has none of the remaster addons and is locked at 320x240@50fps though, and you have to apply the translation manually as well.
>>
>Bought the Switch version on a whim for a discount
>First time ever playing and marathon the whole thing over a weekend
> Took me five hours of repeated attempts to beat hell

It was alright. Run 'n gun with platforming gameplay is very tight and feels fun/satisfying to play. Character were cute with just a pinch of some grimdark to make it a little serious and make you feel good for saving all these little fuckheads.

Can't help but complain it was very short although that's understandle seeing as how this was released in 2004 after being developed entirely from scratch by one nip salaryman over the course of 5 years in his spare time. I probably could appreciate Cave Story's significance more if I could have played it back in 2004 when it was first released.

My question is why hasn't Daisuke Amaya done anything with Cave Story's succesz besides have Nicalis port it to every console? Did he just want to have his indie vidya baby and then fuck off back to obscurity? Dude could have ran with it and kept making games.
>>
>>383879449
From the interviews, articles and everything, I understood that he just didn't have the inspiration for a good follow-up nor the greed to force himself to capitalize on his success either.
>>
>>383875564

Uh, no. You can download the already translated version off the fansite.
>>
>>383881718
Oh, cool. To be fair I haven't actually installed the game in ages, I've just passed the folder around from install to install.

Today I will attempt monster x on hard mode again, wish me luck

Hard mode sucks. Go play an actually well-balanced hard game instead of this touch of death nonsense.

>>383885542
>Just because something is hard makes it good
Yeah that's why I see you play trashfires like I Wanna Be The Boshy. Oh wait, you obviously prefer good hard games like Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden, Ikaruga, etc.
>>
>>383885652
I play both sides
still no luck on my ikaruga 1cc run but I'll get there one day after I stop being retarded with black shots
Did monster X hurt your feelings? did the core touch you somewhere you didn't like? maybe you oughta try growing a pair and learning to dodge
>>
>>383886007
Back in my day it was a challenge run that people didn't take seriously because the game is obviously not designed for it and it tarnishes the careful design of the game for the sake of blindly making it harder. Even the most hard-core arcade junkie would go, "Yeah, this isn't right."

>even the most hard-core arcade junkie would go "Yeah I totally said that you guys"
I don't think you played enough arcades. Even dead simple games like aero fighters still made you sweat to get to their best ending with double loops, 1-hit KOs, and a laughably small life pool. What kind of arcade did you grow up on that had these "junkies" quitting on a game with infinite lives and saves scattered around the world ever so often? Did you grow up playing blue's journey or something?

Look if you wanna get past hard mode all you gotta do is know your enemy's AI and adapt to it. If you're doing a non-minimalistic run the core goes down like a bitch if you stand up to its face and use the level 3 blade + the polar star. While king's out and thrashing around you are free to switch to the PS and shoot the core itself while kig slices and dices the incoming projectiles
>but king's slices are random! he can't get all shots!
He can filter a good 80% of them, and the 20 you deal with are piss easy to jump over while you fire away. Rinse and repeat. If you have a good trigger finger you can kill it before it even raises the first flood. Don't even get me started on monster x because for fuck's sake you got the bubbler. If you're on a minimalistic run just stay on your feet and rely HEAVILY on smart positioning; the flamethrower is amazing if you can somehow get in the core's face unscathed in a flat surface. Again, a good trigger finger will shave off its HP like it's nothing

get fucking good. tell me when you reach ballos. I wish more of my bones were broken.

>>
>>383886873
yet here you are complaining about it being unfair? I don't buy it. but by all means suit yourself and keep yapping about arcades being harder when they were made to gobble up coins. I'm out
>>
>>383887045
Saying a difficulty mode sucks is not the same thing as saying it is 2hard4u. Cave Story's hard sucks because it doesn't change anything but the player's health. It's not interesting or worth playing.

You can try Kero Blaster. The controls are considerably more bland but it has a lot more replayability and cuter characters. I'm surprised they didn't just market this game with FROM THE CREATOR OF CAVE STORY, no-one knows this game exists

>>383889691
If only they hired an artist. I honestly believe the art looking so crude is why it didn't blow up.

I actually love the art design and I think it's overall on par with Cave Story, but from a distance it does make the game look dinky.
>>
>>383875564
Honestly, the back-tracking in the first half of the game is kinda shit. It's annoying but manageable in Grasstown, and fucking horrendous in Sand Zone. That's easily the lowest point in the game and only gets better from there.
