>tfw the 90s aren't coming back

>You no longer go into a game store and find something brand new and innovative.

>You can no longer go down to the arcade and find a new and awesome machine with mind blowing 3D graphics. Or find a new 2D game with the best smoothest sprite animation yet.

How do you deal with the fact that the 90s have passed and won't return. It's really difficult for me.

I'm fine with it honestly. I find that is a self defeating mentality that prevents me from being open to new things. My friends grew up with a different set of games/interests so now I find whatever I missed the first time around. The world is a big place.

Remember being open to new things doesn't mean you will like it. Some people just have different (bad) taste and that is OK. Its more learning about yourself and stumbling onto things you never knew were awesome.

This is objectively untrue

Look at the Seattle Sound, or endless cyberpunk material, or this quote from a famous movie of 1999:

Be honest, what was the ration of good innovative games to shitty unstable and glitched games that were forgotten to time? What was the chance of you getting a game that was AVGN levels of crap when picking a random game off the store?
Don't you think the reason 90's games seemed better is because only the best was preserved while most of the shitty stuff was forgotten to time? This is the equivalent of "born in the wrong generation" kiddies on youtube music comments.

In the grand scale, what video games could learn from that era is focusing more on designs that are fun to play over how easy it is to market them or how easy they are to grasp. This also applies with innovation, as that ideology tries too much to just be new something, anything, over trying to be the best thing it possibly can.

I felt the same way for a long time OP, and to be fair I will admit that I think a lot of things about the 90s were better than today. With that being said, you can still do those same things. One of my favorite things to do is look up a random mall and just go there and walk around, and sometimes I'll find a retro game store and buy something. Many times the mall still has those old 90s aesthetics, and it still feels like it use to. Play some N64 or PS1, kick back some brews, listen to some Alice in Chains, do whatever you want. Nobody except you is preventing you from enjoying the same things you enjoyed back then.

The mind is able to forget harsh memories and bad experiences with time. All thats left is the positive ones.
This creates a skewed version when looking at the past, as though it appeared to be much better than it actually was. This happens to every culture and they always lament a past time that was 'better'.
Its what Trump appealed to on his campaign, and it was what ISIS appeal to with its caliphate.

There were games so janky, ugly, and broken that they made Andromeda look like a gleaming polished gem in comparison; but that's the price of innovation. It was such an exciting time for gaming with all sorts of crazy shit happening.

Things have become so homogeneous and dull. Consoles are just fancy media centers, PC gaming is plagued by unparalleled levels of shovelware and buggy rushjobs, handhelds have been replaced by smartphone games with no depth or skill.

capatlism is just a giant train that can't stop or it will fail
that is why it will fail, it only continues because standing still means death

hence why we bailed out the banks, real economists would have let the banks fail and let the economy naturally evolve from that.

its also why technology as a whole hasnt improved much, will not, as long as they can keep selling you the outdated shit, why gaming has been stagnant in terms of technological advances, why we are trying to sell completely inferior shit VR rather than actually attempting VR, they are only producing what is marketable , rather than attempting the possible

Depends on how old you were in the 90's. People who were kids had nostalgia for it since it had a lot of good games, toys, pop culture, etc. As a decade for those fully aware though, it was more like purgatory. It's arguably the most peaceful, prosperous, and stable decade in modern recollection, but that really just turns everything into a boring mess. It was reflected a lot in pop culture in the time if you go back and look at it again.

It's just one big decade long reminder that life is boring without conflict.

The system cannot be enforced without communist ideals and cannot survive without capitalist tactics. Socialism removes power from the people and gives it directly to the state.

That's not the point you cuck. The point is that events are paradigm shifts for entire eras around them. Sometimes they're innocuous like one guy getting shot or someone winning a German election, other times it's some iconic buildings falling to a terrorist attack after a decade+ of peace. It's not always so much the event as how things are shaped around it.

>>383872310
People choosing to produce without depending on capital from parties who are only interested in seeing their capital grow. Doesn't require a revolution or anything, it just requires people to realize that profit and growth are imperfect measures of the quality of your product. They could still operate in the free market, but deliberately avoid influence from shareholders who would force these metrics of success upon them.

The problem isn't really capitalism itself, it's how much people trust in it. It's a system that allows the world to go around without depending on anyone to be virtuous, which is fucking miracle if you think about it. But that doesn't mean we should abandon virtue and let the invisible hand clean up after us.

American here and I agree.

One of the first things I remember after 9/11 was my art teacher flipping out about how we shouldn't act like we're the worse off country in the world from 9/11. He too grew up in the country, I thought him a prick and an ass for it but reading up about world events after graduating, the guy was right. 9/11 was still a tragedy, y'know but Europe deals with terrorist bullshit about thrice a year or more. Worse even is that us Yanks are more afraid of another 9/11 happening but think we can move on from every mass shooting that goes on in the country like it's just another political hotbed.

You and I live in an insane world, anon. The best we can hope for is to die with the least amount of damage from it.

Here comes the classic "It hasn't been properly done!!" Argument.
You're saying that in 6000 years of civilization, socialism hasn't been accomplished because of (insert ideology to blame here).
You're right, it hasn't worked, and never ever fucking will.
Socialism cannot work with the modern human condition, it would take a degree of enlightenment far beyond our scope today.
Not saying it isn't a great idea, but it unfortunately is just that, a utopian idea with no grounding in reality because the law of supply and demand and the free market is too powerful.
The West is trying very, very hard to push socialism right now, but it is backfiring because the shit simply does not work.

That's okay. I've lost interest in new games since right before the launch of the PS3. The "newest" game I've ever played was GTA 5 and that was only for two hours over a relative's house. Other than that, I played Red Dead Redemption during the week after its launch, and that was just during a five-day rental. My point is, who cares if all that hard-copy stuff of the 90s aren't coming back when videogames in essence have changed (gotten dumber and normier) since, oh yes, the 90s?

It's a natural result of the automation trend, once the number of available jobs falls below a certain threshold the capitalist governments are going to.have to tax the robots and implement a UBI scheme just to keep the money flowing and stop the economy collapsing altogether.

I only play on PC and I hate this, pretty much all the games I have played or want to play only have digital copies which I refuse to pay for, so i just pirate them even though I would be more than happy to pay for a physical copy with the entire game on the discs.

I was bullied quite a bit when I was younger. Even though I don't remember this first-hand, my Mum says that at one point, I was beaten up so badly that she was forced to put me in another school. Another thing is that I'm diagnosed with Asperger's, and I heard that this can have a bad effect on memory.

I look back with nostalgia at a lot of things, but I was an 89 babby, so most of the 90s was just my youth. I wish I could have been in my twenties back then though. The internet being around, but not full of normies, actual incentive to go outside to fulfill your hobbies, etc.

I love technology, but I hate how intertwined it is with our lives.

It's easier to find communities online that share your interests than seek them out IRL. It's larger than that though. Fulfill could mean, depending on the hobby, picking up supplies, but niche shops aren't as prominent anymore due to the internet and lower prices.

I'm just saying, it's easier to be a reclusive NEET now, full stop. But before we'd have had to actually etch out communities sharing our interests at speciality stores, events, etc if we sought to socialize with the like minded.

I have no idea why, but it made me feel heavy pangs of nostalgia, and somehow "get it," but probably not really. My mind for some reason went to those shoes for girls that changed colors in the sun, butthole surfers, the Chicago Bulls and Dallas Cowboys, Pizzahut when it was still a restaurant, and George Meyer and other writers of the Simpsons.

The technology shouldn't be smashed. What is needed is the wisdom to show restraint in its usage, so that it doesn't infringe on our roles as people.
Of course, it's too much to ask of the average mouth breather to see the bigger picture and understand the nasty consequences of their instant gratification. Even we're guilty of it. We'd probably need to genetically engineer a whole new breed of human.

As the Internet grew more reliable and more powerful, people started taking advantage of online multiplayer a lot more. This was mostly on PC up until just under ten years ago. Xbox Live was basically building the coffin for splitscreen. You could play multiplayer games anytime, and not just when your bros were free.

The 1990s change was one that killed off the stagnation of the 1980s. Gen xers were pissed that their parents rebellion failed and they felt more trapped. The music of now will be stagnated as well. The era talked about taboo subjects all in front of your face. The internet expanded this so its not taboo anymore. Anti heroes galore. The unloved the hurt the oddballs the truthful all got famous during this era.

The 90s artists had true freedom in music that corporations made money off of.

We're being slowly boiled. Day by day, week by week our lives are getting shittier and shittier.

My father walked in into a shop and got union job as a mechanic when he was 19. He bought a brand new house for 19k. He could support a wife and 4 kids. We took trips every year to America or somewhere else in Canada.

Friends of mine both work and can barely afford their house and 2 kids. They're lucky if they spend 2 hours a day with their kids. They've been raised by other people.

People on average spend 160% of their paychecks. They have to import 350k people every year to be debt slaves.

The middle class is practically gone. I have no hope. Shit is going to hit the fan bigly.

No you were not even born to be a part of it.

Everything from the 1990s needed to happen

Gay was dumb or stupid to us. It will be that till our generation dies.

The internet didn't come till the late 90s and I guess maybe at most 20% of ppl had it.

I was. Born in 88
What was going on in the lives of my peers were family problems. None of them had good lives. We all felt left behind and isolated.
As us being peers in our dysfunctional lives the music and entertainment challenged us. It taught us to expose our flaws. Say fuck you to our domineering and control freak family members. We were adults quicker then most generations.
At age 6 my family acted like I knew the world already. A Lot of us the parents just threw us outside because our families didn't want to deal with us. The music gave us freedom bonding with each other through are fucked families. The more fucked up that your family was the more support you got from our peers. It was a joke just like gay to be dark and morbid when it comes to your situation. We did diy. Ethos. We let no human or organization destroy what we were.
Since we had tragedy and the music it made us hardened veterans to manipulation control.

Now the tragedy has expanded to groups and were in a crisis era like ww2. We will survive. We seen it and can get over it. Any challenge we can get through. Now the new generation is about restrictions and unifying. And protection of the state. We are still here in our dysfunctional ways. But if we fight in war we will be unorthodox.

I kinda think that in the bible when it talk about a rebellious generation they are talking about gen x
All throughout gen x they talked about the apocalypse. The 90s was the start of the lifting the veil.

Now its time to know if you will fight with me on the front lines of war, its time to stop thinking about the differences of generations its about unifying and fighting for the downtrodden and for the greater good of our country

The quote may be interpreted as how the current generation is one without any given purpose. There is no war or great famine to force us into finding purpose in those. We have to find purpose by ourselves in a world where finding purpose is close to impossible (*cough*globalization*cough*corporations controlling the working market*cough*).

I believe that quote is even more potent for today. All the possibilities to find variation and purpose in life is dwindling for the benefit of an authoritative figure. Go to college (which automatically makes you be in debt), find that there is nobody who wants to hire someone without years of experience (AKA you just paid money to finish college for nothing), settle for a shitty office job, try to escape this lifestyle, et cetera. Examples may vary.

That was gen x this is for this generation

The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the 'agentur' of the 'Illuminati' between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion
We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time.4

Well, some things are better now. I grew up in a weird place where nobody in the 80's or 90's were really into video games and being able to operate a computer was "for nerds".

the 90s were an age of constant surprises, innovation and stuff to be excited for, especially if you were a teenager
There was also the impression that the world was going to the right direction and that things would have improved over time, not to sound political but there was some optimism during the Clinton years
The 2000s killed that, the Bush era was a comeback to darker times, while the economy actually improved (until it crashed) the optimism was gone

>or this quote from a famous movie of 1999
All the guys in Fight Club had jobs.
They had enough money to buy entire apartments full of worthless Ikea furniture.
They had fully paid, full time, fully pensioned careers from their early 20s.
They had free time and cheap healthcare to spend 4 nights a week fist fighting.
All of them were able to pick up second jobs as waiters and cooks. Everyone in Fight Club had a job.
Let that sink in.

I've found myself wallowing in nostalgia for a good long while now. I think it's because I haven't made any memories as fond in the last few years. I think about fun times I've had, with others or playing the vidya and nothing in the last decade really springs to mind. The most recent would be when I played through Bloodborne, and that was a year ago. So I go back, I watch playthroughs of PS1&2 games, read 90s gaming magazines, play 16-bit RPGs because they make me feel something. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of fun with games over the years, but I don't know if it's because nothing's exciting me like it used to, or if it's because I keep comparing it to childhood memories that I can revisit any time I want.

All right, correction, forgetting something, wait

So fall and crawl away, and brush away loose ground

High.
Much higher than today at least.
There was much higher quality control among publishers because patches were unheard of and marketing budgets were tiny.

I would love these memories to be nostaliga goggled bullshit, but when I routinely find myself more interested in and having more fun with games I find on /vr/ which I never played or heard of before, than for games as a whole in the last two gens it's difficult to dismiss the reality.

that's pretty accurate, however I don't think vidya completely went to shit, there is still some quality here and there but it's true that nobody take risks anymore, and that's mostly because there's too much money involved and it's now a cynical industry like hollywood.
It's borderline impossible for a small indie studio to take huge risks, to innovate and to set up a new bar for technology and gameplay all together (take iD with Doom and Quake, something like that just couldn't happen now), once there's too much money involved everything becomes sterile, flat and harmless.

Problem is, there is no solution to this., vidya are victims of their success and the media as interactive experience hasn't progressed much in almost 20 years

At first it was hard because the '00s were truly awful by comparison (with the exception of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymNFyxvIdaM). However, I actually think this decade has been better.

First of all, being in your 30s is pretty good. I feel like a lot of things are starting to click - not so hung up on little things and can better appreciate life. Secondly, much like the '90s - I think society is finally catering to my tastes again. We're getting Sonic Mania in a month and David Lynch is back on TV and Donald fucking Trump is the president.

A black president was pretty impressive but a Trump presidency feels like pretty fair revenge against everyone who made the last decade happen. It's funny to see 20-somethings in the same rut I was in the '00s though. Looking at some dumb ass Republican president thinking that the world is going to end.

>and yet amazingly even with all of those things going on, somehow people were happier and more hopeful than now

I'd be careful about that kind of thinking if I were you. It makes us sound like those guys who were children in the 1950s and swear up and down those times were perfect and peaceful.

Sure, being in a time where a phone was exclusively something you used to make calls and a bullshitter didn't have to worry about someone googling fact checking their statement during a simple conversation seemed great from afar but a lot of us were kids in that time. We didn't have to sit in meetings, deal with the ongoing fear of having to bury our children due to some wackjob with an IED, worry about not having enough food to put on the table AND keep the lights on or put up with that guy at work who just wants to talk about himself more than doing his job at the ages of 5-17. We were sheltered from those burdens and were plugged into advertisement instead so our parents can spend endlessly

And if you're going to complain about them watching the global news, that sounds more like a grievance you should forward to cable television or PBS rather than the internet. For fuck's sake, giving a kid a tablet is no different from us using Apple IIe units in the computer lab. If tech advanced 20 years sooner, it sure as fuck would have been us with the devices, wi-fi and tablets. Our generation is nothing special, it just happened to be around a certain period to consume its products. Time marches on and so too must you get your head out of the sand.

Depends how far.

I think the best restart point is when I'm 6 or 7. Namely because I have a chance not to be a complete dick on the parts that truly matter. Some conflicts I can't avoid and some, I'll have better coping mechanisms if not abilities.

Assuming it works with retained insight but not memory as this fellow suggests >>383913372
Probably would do my homework a whole lot faster with plenty of time for vidya. Would sneak in some lifts from my uncle's weight set every now and then. Be a little serious on martial arts, eat less sugar if I could help it, but probably not because I'm a kid. That sort of deal.

The real meat would probably be when I graduate High School, because I could probably just try for an apprenticeship in electrical engineering or I could repeat what I tried when I first entered community college, except jump on the programming train before it became trendy. Still take art and graphic courses, but prioritize CompSci for a more practical pathway. I wouldn't try to have anything to do with "that girl" at all. Not sure if I'd try my hand at acting, but eh there was this tall cutey in it that I probably wouldn't mind being good friends with or so. Then by the time I staff that convention, I'd probably reach out to Alex Ahad either through the con or my friend that knows him and show him some of my etchings. I'd also stockpile retro shit for pennies on the dollar before ebay and amazon speculators jacked that shit up.

Not quite sure if my life would be more industrious or prosperous if I made different choices. It'd be different, but "better" is debatable. I'd have more toys, maybe different friends and possibly a closer relationship with my siblings or a more respectful one from my mother. Maybe a lot of things will be the same, except for work output in my adult life. Point is, I'd love to have another go at it but I'm just basing that on my life thus far. There's still an array of possibilities and pieces to pick up in the now.

This thread is filled with underage retards or people who were probably ages 5-10 in the 90s. People were not "happier" in the 90s anymore than they are right now. You stupid fucks were to little to even know what the fuck was going on. There was just as many "SJWs" and race war problems as they are now. Get ready when people ages 5-10 say the past 10 years were so "innocent" and "care free" You'll be like me telling them it wasn't. God this board is filled with desperate fucking losers.

I hate how saying "that's pretty gay" is somehow considered to be entirely unacceptable. It doesn't fucking mean that it's actually gay or that gay people are shit, it's a fucking expression for fucks sake.

No Wikipedia or 4chan though...

The difference being we didn't have to hear about it in nearly everything.
>>
>>383916729
Really. Every TV show had the one forced black person in it to be "diverse" and do you really not remember the "Girl Power" fad?
>>
>>383916725
Definitely for the best.
I miss geocities and mid90s Usenet.

I mean I'm 30 now, we can never go back, and yeah I lament it sometimes. Recently drove out and saw one of my old childhood homes, remembered having kids living around the village as friends, and wondered what happened to all of them, even had female friends, then we moved in like 94 or so to a very rural area, that you needed a car to get anywhere,

I think that gimped me in a lot of ways, had to entertain myself, with my siblings, the PC, early dial-up and gaming. Simpler times it seems, but we have things a lot more easier now in some ways.

Here I am now, 30, went back to school, a wizard, and on 4chan. My first online GF introduced me to this site when I was 16.

I remember feeling safe back then.

Fucking this.

Not focusing on current events as a kid didn't mean the problem wasn't there and if your parents blocked that shit out, they were shitty parents. I remember my aunt thought it was gonna be judgment day because of the Gulf War, didn't even think it a biblical reference when she said that nor was I fully aware of there being a war. I was 7. However, it was a very hot day and this was after we all watched Terminator 2 and being at an age where you think adults just know things... well, you can imagine what was going on in my mind the rest of that day.

Point is, pretending doomsaying wasn't a thing before the internet kept us informed about the possibility of it complete bupkiss. If one wants to believe ignorance is bliss, shut off your connection and throw away your TV.

I recently found a geocities page I thought I had lost when the service went down on a backup CD. Such feels.

What site?
Please upload to the geocities archive services, I love old sites.
Was it permanently under construction?

The 90s were not perfect, but as an oldfag who lived through them, I prefer them over these days just because it's what I prefer. Everyone has their own tastes, and mine is to listen to the music, watch the movies, and play the games I grew up with. I still have a lot of all these that I've saved over the years, and it's saved me countless hours and dollars because I don't need any of today's stuff as a result.

I'm also of the opinion 9/11 killed the 90s. It killed pretty much everything too, since it's all gone sterile and bland as fuck now. Now "pushing the envelope" seems to be nothing but dying your hair and shitposting memes. Fucking sad, but oh well. A lot of people will look back at this time as a "golden age" like what always happens.

>>383901878
Daily reminder Perfect Dark was goldeneye 2 and was much better. It even had this level in it. We always played complex. Why aren't bots a thing anymore?
>>
>>383917568
Oh, I think it's better if its gone. It was early teenage me uploading pictures of my family and writing two sentence reviews for video games.
>>
>>383875075
this is what happens when you grow up in a well-adjusted white suburban family

we need trauma and struggle in our lives

Oh, fair enough.

>Ninja Scroll
You have to be gay or something not to fap to Ninja Scroll.
>>
>>383917432
I still perfer Age of Wonders 1 to 2. Shadow Magic was okay, and three is pretty good, but 1 is still king. Still play that once in awhile with friends, been a few years now though
>>
>>383875075
I hate the social side of the current decade so much.
>>
>>383875075
It's really sad too. Her teenage self while not overlly attractive was rather cute in an extremely nerdy girl.

Now all she lacks is to dye her hair neon.
