Just to be clear, people need to realise that if you see a gimmick/badnik from ANOTHER level in a already shown level, then that level will not appear.

Have all these people screaming about zones they want but in the footage we have, there are clear signs they won't be because the gimmick is in the level used.

Somebody needs to recreate this but cross out some things like icecap/launchbase/carn night (forbidden 3) because we 100% won't be getting those, same with Marble Garden and angel island

Why do people call Icecap/Launch Base/Carnival Night the "forbidden 3"? Is it because of that one shitty PC version of Sonic 3 that used different music? Because that has absolutely nothing to do with MJ's involvement, it was an issue with the fact that that shitty PC port used MIDI instead of just recordings of the genesis music, so they had to change them due to the lack of any proper noise channel. There has literally never been any confirmation of Sonic 3 having copyright issues.
Fuck's sake, I'm pretty sure the emulated version of Sonic 3 you can get on Steam actually uses the original songs.

If we want to get technical, Launch Base did appear in the comics recently, and was partially represented in the 3DS version.

Course, the music of that level was obviously there but it's not like those three levels are forbidden from appearing at all. I'd fully welcome Tee making new songs to be their replacement songs or something if copyright is an issue.

The Drop Dash perfectly allows you to just keep moving, it isn't even a quarter as powerfull as a full revved up spindash, it's just to keep you going so it's fluid as fuck. It's so good infact, it ruins other sonic games for me. It's the most OBVIOUS thing ever when you play it, and you leave thinking

I never said spin dash required skill. It's a crutch, one you are penalized (by being forced to stop) for using. Drop dash has no penalty so instead of maintaining momentum with skillful play you can just cheese it. These games are already easy enough, they don't need to be made even easier.

Michael Jackson was involved in Sonic 3's soundtrack. Icecap Zone, Carnival Night, and Launch base are 3 stages that specifically have clear Michael Jackson influence. Which means that if they rerelease 3 that's fine, but if they remake those stages and want to remake those stage tunes, MJ's estate will come down on them like the pack of hungry jews they are for royalties.

I don't think you understand how copyrights and shit work.

Michael jackson was uncredited for the Sonic work, but the fact is several tracks match corresponding songs of his. Which makes them Michael jackson songs. MJ and Sega had some sort of arrangement when they were made, and so general untouched versions of Sonic 3 for ports and shit, are fine as per the original agreement.

But once you start making NEW versions of sonic 3 content, using those Michael Jackson songs, you need a new contract, or pay some sort of royalties for "using his music"

and since his estate since his death is fully of money grubbers, they wouldn't hesitate to take Sega to court for royalties, and they would probably win because it is literally MJ music in Sonic 3, and you don't have MJ himself around to handwave it or get involved himself

As someone who preordered this ages ago, and as such makes no difference in whether I get Mania or not, there's only one thing that's bugged me about this game thus far:
Some of the sprite loops look as though they weren't animated by hand, and instead scaled down flash animations complete with weird colour interpolating between frames that look as though were done by automated algorithm. It's rather jarring when going from this to animations that look as though were done by hand by inserting new frames between the old ones.

This is a modern spriteing technique. But good artists will edit them by hand after scaling.

Watch a 2D Disney film in HD (That hasn't been screwed with by "Enhanced" editions.), the animation is absolutely top notch, but every cel still has the irregularities of someone inking it by hand, and it isn't perfectly transitioning between frames like a flash animation (tweening) because of that hand created irregularity. Yeah but the material they downscale was made by hand, it's just the scaling algorithm isn't. But it produces good results to start with. And those few times it produces good results to keep, just go with it. If you could describe what looks bad by how it actually looks bad instead of looking like X process made it, I'd understand. His eyes and mouth there don't look blurry or anything, which is usually the problem.

I am against automated interpolation of frames though. I agree that's just totally useless.

Also high-res 2D art isn't the only sources that are downscaled. 3D models are used too and could explain the "perfect" transitions you're talking about.

The lack of noise channel did not require them to completely change the compositions, that makes no sense, especially since the noise channel was used to supplement percussion and general midi has a dedicated wide range of percussion. Angel Island and Hydrocity also use the noise channel and they ported those songs, making your claim even more stupid.

Michael Jackson was involved with the creation of "the forbidden 3". Sega did not properly establish legal rights to these songs and they hung in limbo until he died and ownership passed to the Jackson Estate, which is owned by greedy people who will go after Sega like a rabid hyena if they fuck up. Since the Jackson Estate has enormous money and legal power, Sega does not want to fuck with that at all.
As others have said, direct copies/emulations of the original game are valid. Any kind of recreation crosses the line.

The claim that the Genesis sound chip used midi is also wrong. Genesis music is often in a format vaguely resembling midi in concept, but it is really nothing alike.

Shadow's mouth at 1:12's a good example of what I'm referring to, it moves to absolute perfection between key frames because all the animator did was scale it a bit and move it around, instead of drawing a entirely new frame for each mouth shape.

They're optional, personally I find the ones in 1 super easy but they're not fulfilling. Sonic 2 you get a nice reward but I hate the half-pipe so it's a chore to do and Sonic 3 & Knuckles is fine, Blue Spheres are a-ok and they help incentivize you to explore and the rewards for all characters are pretty dope (plus you have a save feature so it shouldn't be that stressful if you don't get them all your first time).

The insta shield lets you double tap and tear through a lot of bosses in S3&K.
Also all those rotating spike enemies can actually be hurt instead of avoided.

Insta shield has mostly combat applications which is an area sonic has few options, unlike the drop dash which is for gaining and maintaining speed which is something he's already pretty good at.
It looks like it feels good to zip around with the drop dash, but the insta shield broadens sonic's toolkit more overall.

It's temporary invincibility. You can phase through a lot of things in the game with good timing, and more speed means more likely to clear through it. No it's not going to be nearly as open and aimless as the first demo, and the camera is being totally reworked. The first demo was a testing ground. It allowed players to experiment and gave me a lot of valuable feedback on how players handle the gameplay and a wide variety of situations.

The graphics were definitely rough around the edges, but I wouldn't say it "looks like dog shit". It at least has a unified art style, unlike Green Hill Paradise. The only major problem, other than low res textures which I assume will be fixed, are certain areas where the textures don't match up perfectly and have clear seams.

Camera is being addressed as mentioned above. Floaty jumps are a different matter. That is deliberate because it gives the average player a much easier time digesting their movement and options. However, I'd like to differentiate roll and unroll states in the air, where being unrolled is floatier and more maneuverable, and rolling falls faster and is less maneuverable. It's consistent with how the states work and gives players a faster falling option.

That sounds really cool. I would suggest adding the slight tinge of brown at the bottom of his pupils he had in some older artwork.
I'm also sure that he'll do Tails justice. Generations really didn't, they shortened his snout, discolored him, simplified his hair, and made him look more chibi than before.

He's going to be drawing model references for me and the characters will be designed faithfully, including Tails and his original features as you point out.

Wow! Looks good. A bit hard to see because of how the shading hits Sonic's eyes.
Tails in old artwork is really inconsistent. His proportions change drastically from piece to piece, sometimes his head his huge, his body is tiny, or he's too fat, or sometimes his snout is even too long. For the most part I'd go with something between the Jam concept art and how his creator used to draw him. I'll just point out how from certain angles you can see that his chest fur sticks out in the from the front, as well as at the sides. You can also see it on Sonic 2's title screen. It stuck out like this up to Sonic 3, I think they flattened it out around Triple Trouble or Sky Patrol. Not many people who make fan art or fan games seem to notice that feature, or they just prefer the later version. It's such a minor detail that I can't blame anyone.

We're all about such details. They're important to representing the character.
That plan for the design is more or less what I'm going for. You can see that Sonic is also a sort of composite, trying to balance his most iconic forms and best features, and leaning towards the latter end of the 90s. I consider the Saturn era incarnations to be the most ideal, but I also have a touch of the game art and anime forms in the design.

I think that's the best way to go about it. Saturn is probably my favorite era design-wise, and I think Tails looks great in the Saturn era, but I also liked his fur more fluffy and voluminous, instead of as slicked and plasticine as it became later on. That along with only being about up to Sonic's eyes really helped him stand out more.
For Knuckles, I think he looks best in the Saturn era, all-around.

That's the light speed dash, and if I had to take a guess it's because Taxman and friends are trying to keep Mania as faithful to the Classics as possible without adding too much new shit.

That said, I do hope that there's unlockable extra moves for Sonic, and just unlockable stuff in general, really.

What that other anon said, I'm sure Mania is relatively conservative in terms of character abilities on purpose, since this is the first true classic game since 1994. Once they make sequels I'm sure they'll start expanding on that end then, personally I would not mind if the light speed dash was included because for all of the faults the 3D games have that move is not one of them.
