It hit the right notes and was released at the right time in the Wii U's lifespan. Too close to the start of its lifecycle and it would have to compete with games like Pikmin 3 and Smash 4. Too close to the end of its lifecycle and not only would it have been overshadowed by Breath of the Wild but it would have been a new game on a dead system with the NX/Switch on the horizon.

Despite all this, the game still died pretty fast minus a dedicated niche, much like the second one will. The game is just way too shallow and boring for anyone over the age of 8.

Even something that isn't even done, PUBG, is way more mechanically interesting and refined than squirting ink on an arena with a short timer and low skill ceiling.

Its like a mini X-com where you play from the view of your 4 units. All of the units play differently. The game can be really tough at times, making you try out different tactics to try and beat the stage. Overall its really fun and all of the characters from American literature are neat and well voice acted, and the alien designs are very Lovecraft-like and creepy as fuck. Probably because the game has fucking Randolph Carter as one of the playable units.

Getting critics on your side is important. Making online as casual and friendly as possible guarantees positive reviews.

Not saying Splatoon is bad but gaming critics are scum.

It's worth pointing out that unlike shit like Chibi-Robo! and Wonderful 101, Splatoon was actually made in-house by EAD, the first character based IP from them since Pikmin back in 2001. That alone already made it a much bigger deal than most of these other new Nintendo series that aren't even exactly made by Nintendo.
