This one actually pissed me off because I did have to check online to find the solution. I don't recall if it's spelled out and blatantly obvious in the book they gave you, or if I found one of these doors before actually doing the main quest, or what, but it's not very intuitive that the answer would be on the fucking key.

What's the point of the double lock, honestly? Why demand the player to both hold the key, and also read the pattern printed ON the key? If you have the key then you have the fucking key, and "solving" the puzzle is just dragging you down for time, as is the animation where you watch the door slowly rolling down.

>>
>>383829820
Nigga, its an easy game. Everything you ever need is casually given to you. If there's a door with a fancy key and a passcode, why the fuck wouldn't you look at the key? Was that even the first time you had to examine an item to figure something out about it in the game?

I don't remember, but that's because I thought about it for ten seconds and didn't immediately give up because the answer wasn't handed to me

Wait, you can actually solve the puzzle?
>>
>>383831180
You have to follow these steps:

1. Approach the bells
2. DeWitt will say something along the lines of "Wait a minute... that card"
3. We think that game developers put that in there as a reference to a card we receive at the beginning of the game.

I'm not sure what's the next but we know it has something to do with the symbols on the card

>how the fuck was I supposed to know you could read books to obtain clues?
you weren't

there is no tutorial that explains that items can be looked at in more detail, there is no key legend on the item select screen that prompts you to look at items in more detail, and there is no other "puzzle" in the game that requires or even implies there is some kind of solution where if you look at the item you can figure out the solution
there aren't other keys with their failure conditions printed on them, there aren't other keys with failure conditions because that's stupid in the first place

it wasn't well thought out, it confused everyone that didn't watch the pre-release presentations where they demonstrated the ability to inspect items, and it's never been used for any other circumstance, before or after other claw "puzzles"

bethesda has dozens of logic failures in their game designing
this is just another one of them

>Everything is casually given to you, so why wouldn't you be expecting a curve ball?
It's like when you're playing a puzzle game and part of the puzzle is on the ceiling, but that's the one and only time you ever need to look at the ceiling to progress. I remember getting stuck in Soul Reaver 2 until I found a guide on the internet telling me to look up in first person view and shoot a door with my Reaver projectile - which by the way, the game doesn't strictly inform you that you have.

I remember a friend telling me he was playing Wild Arms 4 and wasn't really enjoying it, but he was willing to go along with the game until a puzzle wasn't instantly obvious. Up to that point everything was dirt easy, and the first time he had to think he dropped it. Not because he didn't want to think, but because he didn't care and he couldn't be bothered to waste the time.

It wasn't a logic failure so much as part of an intentional ruse. They didn't design this stuff with the player's experience in mind, they designed the opening hours to be shown off in pre release videos to fool people into thinking the game would have more depth.

They open with a dragon going around wrecking shit, but then the rest of the dragons are just glorified cliffracers.
They show off a couple puzzles, but don't tell anyone those two puzzles are all they bothered to make.
They make a point of showing off the first quest NPC giving detailed directions because people complained about having to rely on the compass, but no one gives directions after that.
They make the first city the one they put some effort into, but then half the other cities are tiny collections of mudhuts.

I think Bethesda got up its own ass with marketing. In the very first quest you get the new, badass power armor. The dog runs up to you within five minutes of leaving the vault. A lot of what they showcased was "stunning graphics" and the cinematic opener.

They wasted all their time on crap that would look good in trailers. Didn't do nearly enough to make the player care about any of it after they'd bought the game. I wish I could say people would learn from this, but look at Blizzard. Works peachy for them. I'd be surprised if Fallout 5 didn't fly off the shelves.

>>
>>383833147

Love Riven for nostalgia and aesthetics, still have all the disks for it.

Myst III is probably my favourite though, especially the final part. I remember the big marble rollercoaster puzzle best from that game.

Myst IV had some great ideas, I think the floating island with the green rocks (Spire?) was one of my favourites aesthetically. Unfortunately the game had several mechanical problems with the puzzles, where you worked out the solution but it wouldn't actually get it, like the musical puzzle on the jungle island or the elemental puzzles on Serenia(?) which got me stuck even explicitly looking at solutions and videos. Maybe my save had just fucked up, I don't know.

I would say probably not for Riven, it's better to try the newer ones that are still visually beautiful and clever with puzzles, whilst ironing out Riven's clunkiness. It's tempting to recommend Myst IV for clever features like giving the player a camera and feeling more like a modern game, but honestly I don't remember any game-breaking bugs with Myst III, and it's not like you wouldn't be taking notes anyway, or using screenshots if you can run it through Steam.

These games are pretty dedicated to challenging puzzles that give you a sense of achievement and reward, and I don't know if there's anything recent that's like them.

Myst I - there is a 'restored' version on Steam that modernises it, but might only be good for nostalgia.
Riven - love it, but no
Myst III - yes
Myst IV - yes but risking a broken save
Myst V - no idea, sorry.
Eru - FUCK NO.

Long story short you need to rearrange some letters into a word to help his shop. The letters are pic related. Thats it, thats all the help you get. Your left not knowing if you have to rearrange a french word or possibly even an arabic word.
