Is it good for video games to be less demanding on players' time and allow them more time away from a game yet still be able to catch up or stay competitive with little effort? It seems like that's the modern approach to MMOs, but would it sounds like a good way to balance casual and hardcore players at the same time.

I thought this was Ed Sheeran, looking just at the thumbnail.

Absolutely. In fact the introduction of mechanics into the MMO genre to compensate for players that want to have fun without doing the grind is what all companies should strive towards. Time sinks into MMOs have only led to increased issues in society.

HOW LONG UNTIL I CAN BUY MY NEXT JUMP POTION?
If MMOs had never moved away from sandbox designs to become linear gear treadmills we wouldn't have this problem.

There should definitely be rewards for being a hardcore player. There's no reason to be a hardcore player of an MMO if there's too much of a slingshot mechanic. If someone who plays casually and someone who plays on a much more dedicated basis have the same gear in the same relative amount of time, I think there's an issue.
However, promoting people not spending their lives on an MMO? Great, I think that is a great thing and most MMOs would feel much better if the focus wasn't on a gear treadmill.
