and now playing through 7 and the names of enemies are filled with puns, have draon quest games always had such pun filled enemy names or was it just meme localization?

I haven't played them in a couple of years, but I don't remember as many punny enemy names in the Nip versions. I probably missed some due to not being a native, but a lot didn't seem punny at all. While there are puns in the Japanese version, it's nothing at all comparable to what English Dragon Quest games do.

3ds has two modes. 2d or ps1 style, 2d has random encounters.

Ps3 has mini games, two ganeplay modes. Ones turn based. The other is too, but it lets your hero move and camera too while your party attacks in ai.

Most switch rpgs are action rpg.
