I'm playing pic related and the combat system is awesome.

I'm playing pic related and the combat system is awesome. I also like having so many party characters so every one I don't like is perma canned. I find it really annoying though that the game refuses to tell you anything useful at all, i had to watch a tutorial on youtube to learn how the combat system works because I spent the first 3 hours not knowing I could cast level 2 spells when I'm set to lvl 3 or more. Last night I spent an hour in the hydra marsh and the cities nearby trying to solve the cryptic mutated plant puzzle to find out that I was supposed to use some multiverse travel function that I thought I would get after the marsh.

Is the whole game going to be this obtuse or am I just retarded? I want to keep playing it but I always feel defeated when I have to look at a guide to progress.

Also if anyone wants to talk about other turn based games that works too.
>>
Yeah, there are some things in the game that you can't solve until later. It's a typical jRPG where you're supposed to check back to places and talk to NPCs every now and then as the story progresses. Except in this game you do it in two worlds.
>>
>>383810682
>I also like having so many party characters so every one I don't like is perma canned.
o boy
>>
The entire game is very obtuse. Its about multi-verse theory. It prides itself on being confusing to the point of pretentiousness, and that's why I love it.
>>
>>383810965
Yeah I tried talking to people alot but everyone in the village told me to go to my grave because their dialogue hasn't changed since the start of the game. then the terminal people kept talking about vipers mansion. I guess it will get better later on. Is there a fortune teller NPC at any point that can confirm roughly where I should go?

Also if you get lost in the plot, which is very easy to do, I suggest you go back and either play or watch a playthrough of the text based adventure that CC is a "remake" of but feels more like a sequel to at times, "Radical Dreamers: The Jewel that Could not be Stolen".

It breaks down a lot of plot elements and explicitly tells you the primary theme of both games that is somewhat easy to miss if you just play Cross.

>>
>>383812180
yeah I plan on playing that at some point but the story isn't the thing that's fucking with me. If you go to hydra marsh in the other world they REALLY try to convince you that you are doing the right thing and they give you the safety gear to get farther in. The guy says you're right on track and just need to find a way to deal with the plants.

>>
>>383812635
that's not the point, you can actually beat the game without get the game mechanics, but you can't enjoy it the same way because the devs don't include a good tutotial.

It's gonna be tough but I played way more games this week than I did all last summer so it was worth it.

Truthfully I was hardly using any elements at all expecting the game to explain it when they were necessary. Then my whole team died in a boss fight where I was just using melee attacks and realized there wasn't going to be a tutorial.

it also doesn't help that when an enemy interrupts your attack it does it a half second after when you are choosing the next attack. I thought that it was all time based like chrono trigger and I could attack more if I just hammered the X button.

It's all stuff I would have eventually learned when I started experimenting but most RPGs explain the turn based system to death so when a new combat system showed up I expected it to be explained to death so I waited.

It was nice when they were experimenting. They tried to combine chrono trigger and resident evil in parasite eve and it was ok. I could never get into final fantasy games past 6 because all of their other RPGs were trying to branch out while not hurting their loyal fans, final fantasy 15 is a trash rpg but you can still cast blizzaga and other stuff so it's final fantasy. FF17 will probably just be a FPS but the protagonist will have shitty hair

A game doomed from the very start. The dream team had no influence, Kato didn't even want to make this shit, and square gave it too little budget becuase "LOL final fantasy".

It's a interesting game but I don't know if I would say good. Battles are tedious and often pointless, the story is confusing and feels incomplete, and the game lacks proper pacing and feels disjointed. Add to that that it was expected to live up to it's universally loved prequel AND it kind of shits on it a bit by basically telling you everyone in CT died. It does look great and have maybe the greatest soundtrack ever made for a videogame but even that can't save that. It's a interesting but ultimately dissapointing game.

I think increase of budgets and sales not really following the follow suit undid JRPGs. It doesn't help JRPG developers put all their eggs into one basket as a result of this which meant only the really profitable big franchises survived. Shit, Capcom and Konami combined hold a ton of JRPGs between them that will never see the light of day again.

I think people kind of want to forget about RD.

I remember when reading when Masato Kato (guy who wrote for all the chrono games) originally wrote radical dreamers he had absolutely no desire to even make it connect to chrono trigger and square basically just told him to shoe horn in the connections last minute. I guess when writing chrono cross he just said "well I did that thing a few years ago, might as well just use that". What's also interesting is that it appears he used some ideas from the nes ninja gaiden games, those he had also written for.

it's definately has its appeal. Both games are pretty amazing JRPGs but it never should have been a chrono game. I didn't like cross either, but I didn't hate it like hardcore CT fags do cause I never cared much for the first game in the first place
>>
I played this game back when i was 20 or something, very fond memories.
I especially loved the setting and atmosphere. Traveling through all those tropical islands, with so many characters was something i really appreciated in the game.
I definitely can see all its flaws now, but then again, when you are a teen you tend not to notice them so much
>>
>>383810682
It's one of my favorite jrpgs from that era and I always hated CT faggots talking shit when it's clearly a fucking awesome game, just not the sequel they wanted. Fuckin crybabies.

Anyway, I loved the combat too OP, and it was nice having a large pool of characters - though towards end game I always found myself using characters that unlocked triple techs because why wouldn't you, plus they're some of the best characters anyway. Loved how beautiful the world was and all the different environments as well. There's also tons of unlockables and secrets packed in the game.

CC came out in a time when Squaresoft was at its prime, and it definitely shows. Simply a solid, well made game that's still talked about and played today.
>>
>>383830061
you don't have to love the first game to realize that when they killed off all of the old characters, switched off of time travel, and created a new map that shares almost nothing with the old one it was a sequel that the developers didn't want to make.

I can see not thinking either was amazing, the series is like the Full Metal Alchemist of JRPGs. It's a starting point for everyone and some move to series that better suit their tastes while most normies stop there so the best JRPG they've played is also the only one they played.
>>
One of my favourite soundtracks in all of videogames. Has a really nostalgic vibe.
>>
>>383816178
Yeah and not to mention he doesn't even look badass at all. Opposite really.
>>
It may just be how games were made back then as opposed to now, but with games from that era you are literally supposed to check literally everything and talk to everyone, do random shit in random locations that are uncalled for. Final Fantasy VII is the perfect example of this, with many of the rare materia requiring you to do totally random things like play the piano in Tifa's room. Nobody tells you to walk up to the piano and play it, and nobody tells you what song to play.

Kids are better at finding this stuff than adults because kids will spend all day just dicking off in the game clicking on everything, whereas adults are always trying to figure out how to beat the game.
>>
>>383830061
While I think CT is still really good today, it's hard to convey how mindblowing it was at release. It does so much shit that hadn't been done before, and seem so simple now that it's hard to even imagine a time when they weren't a thing. And it nailed pretty much everything.

For a comparison, the pinnacle of SNES JRPGs and CT's contemporary was FF6. A game where party members still lined up, took a step forward and swiped the air. Enemy animation was just the whole sprite shaking. A game that didn't even have a run button until later remakes.
>>
>>383830641
>you don't have to love the first game
Of course you don't, but I think you have to love CT to actually be butthurt about the changes

>It's a starting point for everyone and some move to series that better suit their tastes while most normies stop there so the best JRPG they've played is also the only one they played

Yeah, I think the reason I wasn't too impressed by CT is because it was not something I played as a kid, but rather as an adult after I had already played and experienced plenty of JRPGs before it
>>
Is there any chance of ever seeing this game on Steam? Square-Enix has been releasing a bunch of their old PS1 stuff in recent years, like the FF games.
>>
>>383830787
It has depressing and baby sounding music all through out. I'd hardly call it great.
>>
>>383831129
I feel the same way now with CT, I like the music and characters but the combat is very basic. Before playing CT though I only had the tales games so I didn't expect technical depth from a JRPG. I'm excited for Chrono Cross though because I can see playing through it with challenge runs like each character can only equip one element type at a time.

not as an angry response or anything but what would you say is your favourite JRPG? I wanted to get a few solid recommendations from this thread for when I'm done chrono cross and I'm finding youtube's top 10 videos to be filled with nostalgia crap.

this, when you're 9 years old and have all the time in the world to progress in your game it doesn't feel so bad to bang your head against the wall and go around in circles before finally progressing. In fact it actually feels like a reward when you're young and dumb. As an adult it just feels like a waste of time and "I cant believe I had to go through all that SHIT just to move on"

I think the non-canon endings, which you get by doing NG+ are much better

At least, they're funny

THIS!

This is why Final Fantasy games these days have a speed up button whenever there is a re-release. JRPG's were always made to be ridiculous like this when they never had to be.

This whole tread is pretty impressive. There's only been like 3 replies that weren't constructive in some way.

Probably because of the OP, he never meant this to be the typical CT vs CC shitflinging

He just wanted help playing the game

The game can be somewhat cryptic sometimes on where to go. Maybe it's that we're used to being pointed in the right direction all the time nowedays in most RPGs, save some exceptions. Just talk to NPCs, pay attention to the plot and explore and you'll fin the way.

Enjoy the OST! One of the best out there, except the normal battle music which is awful.
