Why does Nintendo continue to support Metroid?

Newer franchises, like ARMS, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing, have performed FAR BETTER sales wise than Metroid ever has. Nintendo needs to can Metroid and work on something that people will actually buy.
>>
>>383805483
Nintendo LITERALLY just said why they did it.
The huge popularity of "Metroidvanias" in the indie scene showed them that there must be some sort of demand for the games, so they're making them in response
>>
>people clamoring for a Metroid game for the better part of a decade
>Nintendo announces two Metroid games
>"what the fuck, why does Nintendo support a dead franchise?"

Eat tubes.
>>
>>383805483
wasn't ARMS just pixiv bait?

Nope.

It sold better than every other big name fighting game in the last 7 years (the last big one being SFIV).

Curious to see the NPD for overseas sales to come out within the next week or so too.
>>
>>383806118
I wouldn't compare ARMS to fighting games because one, fighting games are a dying genre and two, ARMS is a fighting game for people who don't like fighting games, so the market is different
>>
>>383805643
Just like they whined about not having a new Star Fox.
>>
>>383806258
>ARMS is a fighting game for people who don't like fighting games

Only if you're referring to complex combos.

ARMS is still a traditional fighter in the sense that you have to learn the fundamentals and play with footsies, trades, knowing when to take the opportunity to block, grab, etc.

I've had a person who is pretty decent at SF2 play me in ARMS and rage quit because they couldn't get the fundamentals down, causing them to give me free wins without even hardly using rush attack.
>>
>>383806258
Don't forget that Switch owners don't have anything else to play.
>>
>>383806258
>>383806460
Also, even though it's a "dying genre" in terms of sales, plenty of fighting games are being made still to this day.

In fact, I would argue that there's still an argument to be made for fighting games, as seen by Arcana Heart 3 Six Stars Kickstarter being funded within only a few days of release.

Stopped reading there
>>
>>383806518

Its mostly this and the fact that half the store bundles out there have it included. Check the rate of trade-ins and then it makes sense.

Splatoon and Animal Crossing both outsold every Metroid game.

Yeah no, that shit flopped big time.

>>
>>383806118
That's an oddly skewed way to count fighting games. How does ARMS count but not Smash, Gundam Vs, or fucking Pokken?
>>
>>383807952
Damn thosr are shitty numbers for Gundam.
>>
>>383807952
The source is from a Frenchman who did the collecting of data.

My guess is he just neglected those franchises because they have high profile licensed IPs representing them as opposed to fighting games with new and original characters to those franchises.
>>
>>383805483
>Nintendo needs to can Metroid and work on something that people will actually buy.

They don't, actually.

Nintendo can make whatever the fuck they want and still be fine.
>>
Because some game series provide brand value due to their quality and public opinion rather than massive AAA sales. Metroid isn't going to make top dollar but everyone who talks about it only has good thing to say about it, sans Federation Farts and Other M.
>>
>>383808313
After not making a game for nearly 10 years Street Fighter is basically a license cash in game anyways and BB's best sales came from a TV anime. (where the heck is Central Fiction anyways)
>>
>>383806307
We still haven't gotten a new Star Fox, just another remake of the original.
>>
>>383805483
Why does /v/ keep talking about 2D Metroid and FPS Halo, it's obvious they're not real fans like they claim. /v/ is filled with Primefags and shitheads who's first Halo game was Halo 2's campaign so they parade ODST and Reach like they're the best games in the series. There other sites and boards on 4chan that you can go to talk about 2D Metroid and FPS Halo from real Metroid and Halo fans but it sure as hell, isn't /v/.
>>
>>383808635
>Street Fighter is basically a license cash in game anyways
Not with how crummy SFV was received due to Capcom's soft launch of the game in hopes that casuals would buy the game based on the license alone.

The proof is also in the amount of EVO competitors, dropping by nearly 50%.
>>
>>383806118
Where the fuck is Smash? Smash 3DS has sold almost 9 mil and Wii U has sold over 5 mil.

>not a fighting game

If you believe that, then define "fighting game."
>>
>>383809138
See >>383808313

Guy collecting the data likely opted out of putting in games that sell based on other franchises.

Nice shitpost.
Samus Returns' trailer has 2 millions views and is the second most seen of their E3 after Mario Odyssey.
The Prime 4 one isn't that much behind, and it's just a fucking logo.

Even if Metroid isn't a major seller, cause frankly its not, it still is one of those series that hardcore gamers talk about. It helps Nintendo's image and gives them a core "mature" IP.

Variety helps them in the long run.
>>
>>383805483
>Why does Nintendo continue to support Metroid?

They've finally realized third-parties aren't interested in Nintendo hardware so they are attempting to pick up the slack by bringing back underused IPs.
>>
>>383805483
They're not "heavy hitters" but the 1-2 million sale averages Metroid games acquire (same as Kirby and better than Star Fox, for comparison) is enough justification for at least some attention. Especially if the Indie-market will buy them like >>383805631 said (also Prime being Metroid's best-seller).

We're talking about the same company that endlessly pushed a dead series like Fire Emblem until enough weeabootry got them sold, afterall.
>>
>>383805483
metroid games sell about 1.5 million copies on average, it's a respectably successful franchise
>>
>>383809447
This looks so good (this post is from an actual Metroid fan, since they can rarely be found along with Halo fans on /v/).
>>
>>383809823
I unironically can't wait until Nintendo brings back the Wars franchise with Weeb Wars.

Nintendo has a lock down on which of their franchises people will buy a console for and produce one in that series per console maximum
>>

The Switch launch would not have been as spectacular if it didn't have a flagship as a launch title, a Zelda as its launch title, and said Zelda also being hailed as a watershed moment for its genre.

Because they're willing to give Metroid another chance. Thank goodness for them.

But if Samus Returns and Prime 4 don't sell well, then yeah, maybe Metroid isn't worth investing in in terms of business, so they'll stop making them. I hope that doesn't happen, though. I think they'll sell well.

Metroid has an insanely autistic and dedicated fanbase only comparable to smashfags.
ARMS is just flavor of the month garbage, just like splatoon.

>>383807952
ARMS is a new IP while Gundam is licensed

And those are really poor numbers for Gundam Versus, since EXVS debuted with 370k and Full boost at 250k.
>>
>>383815218
>ARMS is just flavor of the month garbage, just like splatoon.

Oh the irony. This is the same shit people said about Splatoon. I don't even like ARMS but if it somehow gets popular and gets like 4 reps in the next Smash game I'll be laughing my ass off all day long.
