I kinda want to play Subnautica, but I'm unsure if I want to invest myself in an unfinished game. Is it worth playing even in this unfinished state or should I wait?
Subnautica thread I guess.

So that's "should wait", then?

You don't have long to wait, all that's left is optimization before release

Just leave it for now and buy it when it's done, there are still weird bugs, one of them was that every time i logged in, it made a new starting point for me, and kept the old aswell, so after a few times, i had a few different starting bases, wich was absolutely shite because of all the pointers on the screen.

>america has school shootings every day
I have lived in chicago my entire life. last year there were 3,500 shootings and 720 gun kills. thats a shooting every 2-3 hours. there were 803 total murders, the highest amount of murders out of any city in the country. chicago alone had more murders than LA and new york combined. a ton of these murders happen on school property thanks to young retards joining gangs and bringing their conflicts to school. sadly, something like 85% of the murders have absolutely no leads and 0 arrests are made.

most people have heard something about how bad chicago is. heres the little statistic nobody talks about: 78% of the murder victims last year were black. 17% were hispanic. asians and whites made up less than 5% of the total murders. I have lived in chicago my entire life. every single school I have ever been to has never been shot up. why? because Im white and dont live in the ghetto. white people will shoot up a school once in a while and it gets national media attention for years. black people murder each other every day in chicago and nobody cares. this guy didnt decide to change his game over black lives, oh no, he only cared once whitey finally got shot. every time I see someone shedding tears over crap like this, I get extremely, irrationally mad. gun control isnt saving any lives in chicago and changing a fucking video game sure wont either

Actually, that member was talking out of his ass when he wrote that.

The primary, canonical reason why you can't craft 'weapons' in the game is because the corporation itself doesn't allow the schematics. Almost all weapon schematics are not available to those with access to replicator technology because it would make it way too easy for the workers to revolt and rebel. From the logs and in game writing, it's pretty clear that this is a time in Humanity's exploration phase where they are going through a 'Star-Trek Federation'-esque period which is enforced, ironically, through hard labor and profit instead of just science. This is noted when you start picking up Gold and Diamond, and your personal VI is informing you of how many millions you owe the corporation after you escape. They are billing you for every knife you make and taking ownership of every quartz rock you mine.

The people who spout the 'no guns!' meme for Subnautica haven't even played the fucking game.

Pirate my nig. I wouldn't care if they didn't make it political. Game does really need a spear"gun" though (it's literally powered by a giant rubber band).
>>
>>383806163
You don't take falling damage in Portal because you're wearing spring boots.
The spring boots are there because the devs didn't want the you taking falling damage.

You don't have guns in Subnautica because the corp doesn't want you to have them.
The corp doesn't want guns because the devs don't want you having guns.

The game doesn't have guns because the devs are concerned about school shootings (unimportant) and/or they want to keep the player afraid by making the player categorically combat-inferior (likely).

I was like you, so I pirated it. It's really fucking good, so good that once it's actually released I will definitely buy it.

It's not optimized though, has tons of issues with pop-in and I've ran into a few bugs. But I expect most of this'll be fixed at release. Outside of that it's been a great game so far, easily one of the best in the whole "open world survival crafting" genre.
>>
>>383806163

kilometers underneath the water, deep within the Active Lava Biome there is an ancient alien facility. It's over a 1000 years old and it's a prison that holds this majestic creature. It's called the Sea Emperor (tho it's a female), it's intelligent, can use telepathy and it's immortal. It will contact you after some time and if you want to "win" the game you'll have to find it and help it.

This is why pandering to politics in art is retarded, because you're allowing the presupposition that the artist is responsible for the actions of the viewer. They have no reasons for weaponry. Never saw an aggressive alien or anything. They didn't expect to crash land into spookum territory.

Also to prevent uprising.

Also to make the game more spooky from being helpless at least for a while.

Now, they should add alien tech weaponry at post game so you can beam blast the animal life but idk if they would do that.
>>
>>383813113
I honestly cant think of any other reason. Everyone who says bitches about the lack of guns fails to give a reason to why guns would make the game better.
The only guy who tried was an avatar fag who said that more mechanics instantly make a game better wich is BS because just randomly something to a game without rebalancing it probably just makes the new mechanic unbalanced to useless.
Imagine doom with a jump button, all the maps and enemies would have to be redesigned.

I use pol. Guns post game would be better for some few reasons.

Revenge on leviathons

See what loot they can drop

Maybe endgame secret alien tech to research via scraps from them (ghost lev Comes to mind)

Make the enemy fish stronger and bulkier overall and killing them gives acheivements.

>>
>>383814260
Eh, I find it a weak reason to add guns. Creatures dont drop loot, and adding it as a post game item would basicly make it a joke/cheat item. I'm not saying the devs arent SJW's they could be for all I care. But I really like their game and not adding guns seems like a good desgin choice for the niche this game is aiming for.

Adding alien tech to the already existing lore of alien weaponry imo is just as interesting.

Hell one of those portals could lead to frozen lands like you wanted.

Either way, post game content could have weapons for revenge, fun, pvp shit etc etc.

Researching a levi for alien tech purposes is fun imho.

I'm not saying I want or need it now, I'm saying it's a fun thing that can happen down the line and I'd want it to be post game, not endgame.

Honestly I dropped the game for now after building prawn suit. If it had more stuff to do with upgrades and exploring beyond a little thing I'd keep playijg.

Post game content. Expanding on alien tech. Pvp. Revenge against big fish.

Its actually a very good one, content that isnt used is wasted and could have been used to make something better. Saying that a game should add unrelated content that isnt targeting the niche the game is going for is a bad thing. Its just adding stuff the niche audience didnt want in the first place.
>>
>>383817548
there is no vulnerability in underwater mine craft, just autism and fatties
>>
>>383817548
No it wouldn't. There wasn't that sense in the first place. You can knife everything to death that isn't a leviathan, and ramming your Seamoth into everything is already enough to kill all of the sharks, amp eels, et al. Enemies are more of an annoyance than they are scary. Even then, the leviathans would obviously not be weak to any non-Precursor weapons. Hell, the Sea Dragon Leviathan got past all of the Precursors' weapons and only died because it used its head as a battering ram to break open their beyond-diamond-tough walls.
>>
>>383817521
not all content is good content though you dingus, I'd rather the devs spent their time adding new good content than trying to balance PvP, and the crowd that PvP draws would ruin subnautica threads forever, even worse than you gun shitposters have made them

So what do you think about building a base close to lifepod 3, its near 3 different biomes and halfway to floating island from the lifepod. Also next to mushroom cave entrance, active volcano and pretty close to grand reef.

How much power do you need for the fucking desalination machine?
I have 5500 power, half of which is from thermal generators, and that PoS draing it in minutes.

No, just regular guns so you can get crabsquids and and bonesharks off of your papier-mache-esque Cyclops, or being able to kill crabsnakes so you can get in the hidey-holes without getting niggered.

You anti-gun fags are fucking ridiculous at this point. I agree that being able to just kill off a leviathan is ludicrous and takes away a lot of fun and charm in the game, but there's already a propulsion cannon filled with gas or shrooms that does the job of a hypothetical gun, just far more difficult than need be.
>>
>>383818483
How about you apply yourself. The game is on an underwater Platue, how can they add random tundra underwater frost lands?
Alien pOrtal tech?
Well alien tech involves deathrays so you anticontent fags can shut up.
>>
>>383818379
They arent gonna add terraforming anymore they cant make it work, if they add more alien lore its better to do it in the niche of the game and make an DLC that is about exploring more of their shit, hell maybe even encounter one. If they can fit a gun in that then why not but it shouldnt be the focus.
>>
>>383816881

Is there anything in the game that even needs lots of power right now? I know bioreactors are shit, but I've never ran into problems with power by having two of them set up and a constant supply of Reginalds to feed into them.

I've got everything a base could need too, only thing I'm lacking is the bugged water filter machine which draws the power of 20 nuclear reactors and still drops you down to 0 power in minutes.

It's bugged. It's power drain increases with time until it will eventually drain all of your power. I think if you set up about 500,000 power, it gets 3 bottles of water before draining it so fast it's stuck at 0/500,000 power forever.

just wait until release - you won't lose absolutely anything.
I'd rather suggest pirating (or paying less than 2 dollars) for Farsky - it's essentially Subnautica, but with simpler graphics and 2-3 hours worth of content.
Also, the framerate is silky smooth (which is something Subnautica doesn't feature at the moment)
>>
>>383796162
It is one of the few good early access tittles, it is very fleshed out in its current state and still gets constant updates. In fact its 'end' is pretty much already implemented except for the escape.
>>
>>383818771

The game already has weaponry to be fair. The gravity gun can shoot crashfish like some kind of rocket launcher and if that's not enough there is literally torpedo launchers.

I don't expect them to add lots of different guns and shit, but I was expecting at least something like a harpoon gun for self defence.
>>
>>383818697
I honestly think you are ridiculous, the Cyclops isnt weak anymore because of the overshield, if you actually manage to get it even damaged by bonesharks then I dont know what you are doing. You are trying to make the game something that it isnt, the propulsion cannon being a bootleg gun gives the game charm, it makes fighting off monsters more fun and I think adding a gun would take that away from the target audience because they would have to handicap themselfs in order to experiance it.
>>
Can any of you anons give me any suggestions on getting through the lava zone unscathed?

Terraforming worked, it's just that a lot of the performance issues were caused by terraforming (had to save chunk mesh terrain data for everything on top of all the other shit in the game) and in the end it really wasn't part of the core gameplay, it was just something extra that had a really high resource cost and was becoming a pain, so it was cut.

From the safe shallows, swim towards the side of the ship. Stay near the border of the Shallows and the Grassy Plains (red sea-grass). Keep the last Kelp Forest to your right and hug the hull of the Aurora, then swim towards the front. Slip through the steel beams and climb onto the platform.

The only possible problem is if the Reaper below the front of the ship glitches into the ground and bugs his way towards the Shallows.

The main character doesn't have a gun because he's usually unprepared, you absolute faggot. Not because he has a moral issues with shooting the monsters/murdering psychopaths to save himself.

Are you telling me that swimming nigger can build a fucking submarine out of scrap but can't make a gun to protect himself? No, the only thing holding him back is an ideological driven developer.

Question: Why whenever the f*rearm issue comes up, do people refer to "the dev"? Is the guy who posted that comment on steam the project lead? Is he the CEO or otherwise in a position of power? Is there only one person making this game and that's why my seamoth still resets its depth rating when I log back in?

Or is it because "the dev" makes it sound worse instead of saying "a dev"? Also, give it a fucking rest. Every goddamn thread you bring this up. I'm a gun nut myself, having built multiple ARs including a Mega Maten. I don't fucking care. It's a fine game without them. Guns would remove much of the threat, and I don't want trash underwater needle guns with a 10m range anyway. >>
>>383833892
Same thing (not litterly), same problems apply, this game is not about killing sea monsters its about exploring an alien world, this is the niche the devs are going for. Straying of an niche is usually a bad idea as it will just add stuff that the target audiance didnt want wich is time wasted that could have been spent adding something that makes exploring better. If any weapon should be added it should be spear, its the only thing that I feel would still force you to learn how the monsters work while giving you a weapon you could use in a pinch that doesnt risk getting hit.
In short, Subnautica is Subnautica not underwater Halo.

Lights need a serious power nerf.
Shouldn't actually cost anything, just need at least 1 power in the base to be on.
Purifier is fine, if anything should cost a shitload of power its the thing that produces materials from nothing.

Desalinators IRL require lots of power as well.

So I'm kinda new at this game. When should I start building a base? How many bases do people normally have?

So far I just built a tube under my escape pod so that I could put a bunch of lockers in it for storage.

I don't know where to build a base either, I haven't gone below ~200m so I haven't seen all the cool biomes yet. Or is it normal to have a bunch of small bases in each biome?

Also, can you deconstruct a base that you've built?
>>
>>383840807
There used to be two entrances, you might be thinking of the one you can't use anymore. Only entrance now is on the nose section after it blows.
>>
>>383840627

The map is all voxel based as originally they wanted terraforming to be a feature. They realized it made the game really laggy, wasn't useful, and wasn't fun so they dropped terraforming and they plan to turn it into a normal mesh. It should boost performance noticeably, but implementation is always SOON™
>>
>>383840635
Where do you get water while you don't have a knife?
It's literally impossible not to kill at least a few bladderfishes.
Also, you have to bait a crashfish into killing itself so that you can get a repair gun.
Talking about
>VIOLENCE BAD
in this game is hypocritical as fuck.
>>
>>383840856
>When should I start building a base?
Use a small one for storage to begin with, then choose a location later on.

>How many bases do people normally have?
Most just make one medium sized base, some place biome spanning structures in various. The fist option makes more sense I do the second.

>Also, can you deconstruct a base that you've built?
Yes. You get back all the materials used too, so you can fuck up all you want.
>>
>>383840203
Orignal Silent Running was pretty fucked, on one hand people were bitching over nothing because Silent Running made you invisible to everything, However for some reasons Sea Dragons would still see and attack you.

With the new VotD Update they just made it more tedious. But at least Sea Dragons don't attack you anymore.
>Silent Running
>turn off engine once something is about to attack you after it wears off
>jack off in your sub for a minute and a half
>Boot up engine and silent run another length of your journey
>rinse and repeat until you reach your destination
Optionally you might take out your batteries during the Engine off period to tell power suckers to fuck off.

Build a base whenever you want to. A base makes survival easier, but only after you find useful upgrades.

Safe shallows, the starting zone, is pretty useful for a base as you can fully build everything you can build there.

Depends on the player. I tend to have my ass huge main base near this one wreck because I like the aesthetics. I also have my "explorer base" which is a base I move around to scan for fragments. No reconstruction cost from what I remember, just battery charge.

I could spoil it for you, but get a scanner and just keep doing the lifepods that come in over the radio scan stuff in wrecks and at the lifepods and you will get a bunch of tech that really makes survival easily, and one of the pods gives you a location with some really easy to harvest food.

One tech allows you to grow fish and the other allows you to grow plants. There is another tech that gives you fresh water, but it's bugged and it's near impossible to use.

Yes, decontaminated water actually gives you more water and with the scanner room it's piss easy to to gather the salt for it.
However, in order to harvest the other resource (which is coral plates), you need a knife. You can only create a knife after you've been to the Creepvine forest.
It's likely doable if you go straight for it, but then you'd be speedrunning, not RPing as a pacifist.

Alright. I've found a bunch of lifepods so far but nothing yet in the ways of food/water generation.

The most recent thing I did was reach the control room of the anti-air tower thing. I now have to go find some other base deep underwater.

Also I activated the portal looking thing on the island but was too scared to go through it. I go through it tonight when I get on.
>>
>>383841883
I completed the story up to the latest update, and only realized just recently that you can repair the Aurora. I just never used a suit that wasn't the radsuit.
And it's not like repairing it would automatically and instantly scrub the entire ocean of radiation, it would just stop MORE radiation from flooding the area.

guns would either trivialize the game or would be pointless post-game godmode stuff. you could potentially balance them but you'd have to come up with moronic reasons (like gun ammo is hard to make, or the blueprint is 1km deep or some shit)

either way I don't really want them, who cares about the reason why?

Spoiling for the blind anon

You got to the AA tower and you never went below 200m? You never got the life pod for the second in command? His pod has a beacon for a meet up location and that will allow you to grow plants. Just dive down to it with a seaglide, your character can go deep and all it does is reduce the oxygen time limit. Have you been grabbing the PDAs from the wrecks?

To add, video games let you do things you might not otherwise be able to experience. They are a form of escapism as many hobbies are.

I enjoyed GTA when I was a kid, now it really doesn't hold the same appeal. I'm no longer angst ridden and I can shoot a gun any time I choose I real life.

But I've always wanted to get into diving, and it is pricey. And dangerous. Especially since I enjoy spelunking.

Your character and the seaglide has a crush limit of over 3000m, it just cuts your oxygen time. Bring a flashlight, a knife, and your balls and you can do it. Park the seaglide above it, toss flares if your scared and you will be fine.
