The internet as it is now is like water. You pay for it and it runs when you turn it on.

If the ISP's have their way, they could charge you an extra $20 to use the water to wash your clothes. $5 per shower. $50 to water your lawn.

That kinda shit but with data and speed

Net neutrality is a meme
>>
>>383779926
It's written in state legislation. The ISPs have essentially bought off every single major municipality to to give them total control over the infrastructure, which they then refuse to upgrade or share. They're literally letting copper lines rot to force rural people onto wireless while killing unlimited plans in the cities.
>>
>>383780156
yes you can. Its like saying as you can have freedome and law´s.
>>
>>383780015
because it's not "technically" a monopoly
most places in the US generally have (2) choices so people like >>383779589 think that means it's a "free market"

The big dogs just let the non threatening companies come in and block out the real competitors.
Though "allegedly" google is going to move to wireless and if that happens it'll be a good day to be an internet fag.

The people with money have power, the people with power make the rules, and the people who make the rules do their damn best to ensure the rules don't harm their bottom line. The game was rigged from the word go, and there's virtually zero chance of any up and comers from changing the situation we're in right now here in the stats in terms of ISP choice/competition.
>>
YAAAAS
PLEASE TAKE ALL MY MONEY CORPORATION-SAMA

>>
>>383779361
In the most simple terms, repealing net neutrality gives ISPs more power to fuck us over. There is literally no upside for people who are not ISPs.

The people arguing it's good for us believe that after the ISPs get more money by fucking us over, they'll spend it doing nice things for us. Which they would have literally no incentive to do because most (not sure of the exact number) internet consumers only have one available ISP. That's literally the only possible way this bill can be a good thing for the average person, and what these shills are pretending to believe will happen.
There is a long history of ISPs fucking us over in the exact way they're promising they won't again.
>>
>>383780064
Some of the cable companies are bad guys and try to force net neutrality out of the windows, but even the ones that don't aren't really stepping up to defend net neutrality, only the services that rely on it do, like Amazon, Hulu, HBO, and Netflix, Youtube, Yahoo (because of Twitch) and of course providers of online games services.

Net neutrality just means internet providers can't limit your speed depending on which content you're accessing with your connection. But they'd all like to do just that.

They're proud of capitalism to the point where the average person will rank a business' profits higher than their own ability to access goods because creating a successful business is part of the American dream.

You see this behavior in vidya discussion a lot. People will fight over which consoles have the better exclusives when exclusives do nothing for them. People will argue that casualizing games to focus on the lowest common denominator makes business more money, even though "how much money a business makes" has no value to them unless they work for that business, and all they get out of it is a shallow game with shallow gameplay.
>>
>>383779926
>>383780015
In the US if you build something it's yours to keep. Since the ISPs all built their own infrastructure after borrowing tens of billions of dollars from the government to do certain projects only to not do it and never return the money it's theirs to keep.

>because it's not "technically" a monopoly
It's not a monopoly at all. You don't even have to get "technical" about it. That's not what the word means. At all. The word you're looking for is oligopoly, and those exist. Just look at airlines. There are few enough of them that they can agree on business practices, like pricing tickets based on how close the purchase date is to the flight date. It's in their best interest as a business to do this, so they all do it. If one of them stopped doing it, most of them would probably stop in order to compete -- but there's few enough of them that they don't ever have to worry about that, and the cost of aircraft are so heavy that they don't ever get new competitors who come in and rock the boat.

What are some criticisms of net neutrality that aren't "ISPs should be allowed to double-dip customers who already pay for the bandwidth packages they use"?
>>
>>383780382
There were various factors that prevented it from happening. The biggest ones are that their monopoly wasn't nearly as strong, so people could always just switch to a competitor, and that they flat out didn't think of it. Issues happened over the years, but Net Neutrality really started to be threatened in 2015, leading to the regulations. In anycase, the situation is different now, and it absolutely would happen if NN was to be repealed.

>>
>>383780605

Well, if you don't use Netflix, you'll probably have much faster internet when everyone else is on Netflix, since Comcast can throttle Netflix but leave browsing bandwidth untouched.

Not that it would be worth it, but lets not forget what this is really about here. It's about throttling specific high-bandwidth services without throttling all connections.

The idea of packet-driven pricing is a meme.

People envision a non-neutral internet as a more expensive internet ("buy the Gamer's Upgrade package! Access to online gaming for only $19.95 more per month!") but if your ISP could charge you $20 more per month and keep your business, they would, net neutrality be damned. They're a monopoly. If the market will bear an additional $20/mo on your service, they'd already have it on there.

The real issue is competition throttling. Comcast owns Hulu, so Comcast can make Netflix run slower to promote Hulu subscriptions. That's the sort of thing people are actually right to be worried about, because the internet will stop being a perfectly competitive marketplace.

As it stands, the net is neutral. This means that information that goes through the tubes is all treated exactly the same, whether it be streaming a video from youtube, or downloading a book from some Russian piracy site.

ISPs want to get rid of net neutrality so they can throttle data from websites they don't like, or just from popular websites. For instance, they could charge you an extra $10 a month for unrestricted netflix access, or simply throttle the speed of websites they don't like (Or whose competitors have paid them to do so--or who haven't paid their protection money) to 1 kb/s
>>
>>383781238
Yeah, they already screw consumers as they please, now they just want to make content creators/providers pay for arbitrarily limited access (ostensibly to pass the savings on the consumer, but who can even say that with a straight face). Of course they'll give their own proprietary services a pass, trying to shift you from the open internet to their own little walled garden where you only see what they want you to see.

Basically net neutrality stops an ISP for charging you based on what you access. Like water and electricity you are charged for what you use rather than what you use it for.

Without it, ISPs have tried to force you towards using their partners and services and intentionally slowing access to rivals.

Technically net neutrality wasn't supposed to take effect until the end of this year, but the threat of it kept ISPs in line.

The counter argument is that competition is good and will force lower prices and that you can switch ISPs if they do bad things. Unfortunately the choice of ISPs is limited so most likely you will get Comcast-like horror stories.

Of course this all could have been solved last year but the fucks at the Tom Wheeler FCC decided that they needed to wait because...

Hey guys I am italian and my speed on speedtests reaches nearly 30 mb, I have time to time downloaded at 2,9 mb/s but with the right server I can get a steady 2 mb.

Problem is lately despite the steady speedtests using Steam or even Battlenet has given me a top speed of 600 kb, sometimes 700 kb when I know I can reach much more, worse, if using both services they have divided the 600 kb (so one goes 200 the other 300 and so).

It seems a clear case of neglect of net neutrality, how can I fight against it considering.

1) Their contract is the usual (UP TO [speed])
and cover their asses saying that based on bandwith they might slow speed

2) No test that I have done technically indicated that my ISP is throttling.

3) Is my only choice of ISP.

I was just pointing out that even in the EU, where emerging monopolies are monitored fiercely, they can't actually tell market leaders to not be their best, and second rate competitors to pull themselves together.

Things are not a monolopy just because you experience something you don't as a consumer feel is a real choice. But it is of course a very commonly occurring symptom.

>>
>>383781873

No, it couldn't. All a provider can reliably monitor is the amount of data you upload and download and the services you attempt to connect to. It can't distinguish 2 connections to PSN, once with a 20gb download and once with a 10gb download, as one single 30gb game downloaded.

And even if they changed it so they could, the services like PSN and Steam could hide the information for their users' sake, or the user could use a VPN.

The ISP could demand from Steam or PSN that they make the data available, or the service won't be accessible through their network at all.

At least with Comcast, I'm assured that they want my money and don't give a rat's ass how I think so long as I'm good for the money.

I'm saying they're different in the very important way that a monopoly is something someone can do something about, whereas you personally experience that you aren't getting a proper choice isn't something anyone else would necesarily give a shit about, or have the legal power to change.

This means that if net neutralety is gone we will have to do the same to block US services in Europe and keep EU bucks out of US corporation pockets. so much for free flow of information and free flow of goods.

Trade war anon.

As much as I am glad I don't live in America (but I rather not live in Italy), is easier to look up these things for there.

>You only option would be to switch to another ISP
Is impossible because here how I am:
I live not in a city, not in a town, but OUTSIDE a town, what used to be a private community, not exactly gated (there was a Gate, never saw it closed though), but "outside".

Now, the town that is 3 Km away did get 20 Mb, I have shitty cables, I get 6 Mb, these cables are owned by Telecom, if I change to Fastweb, same cables rented from Telecom same service, I tried with Vodafone, except Telecom walked all over them, they never gave much of a shit and the internet was less than 1 Mb.

So I am using Linkem, which is wireless.

Maybe I should buy a VPN, I saw one for 15 bucks a year.

Yes they do. Did you not hear about the Snowden leaks?

The focus was on America because he's an American and he released American secrets to the press, but the loophole they were using to spy on Americans was based on FISA, which gives them blanket allowance by the US government to monitor any and all foreign (read: literally every country except the US) digital communications. That includes your search history, your emails, the sites you visit, the numbers you dialed, how long you were on the phone for, etc, etc, etc.

>Hillary Clinton has indicated support for net neutrality. She gave two thumbs up to FCC chairman Tom Wheeler’s proposal for strong net neutrality rules, though admitted it was only a “foot in the door.” Clinton has expressed concern that regulations could mean stagnant competition among service providers, saying “we’ve got to do more about how we incentivize competition in broadband.” And she’s committed to fighting broadband monopolies, citing Google Fiber in Kansas City as a perfect example of what she wants to see everywhere in the US.
Whether Hillary would've been overwhelmingly committed to NN is beside the point, and that is NN has no chance with the current government. You made your beds, time to sleep in them.
