Playing XCOM 2 on veteran (medium) mode.
Game is fucking hard.
I'm at the point where you start seeing Mutons, and I can't get through a mission without either someone dying or save scumming.
How do I git good?
Think it's because I wasted good research time on autopsies instead of guns and armor

You don't have the Alien Hunters DLC do you?

If you do... oh man, just wait till that mofo shows up. It freaking moves every time your soldiers do anything, in the middle of your turn.
>>
>>383774990
>I can't get through a mission without someone dying
That's part of the game. Sure you CAN complete missions without losing anybody but at some point you have to expect to make some losses in order to go forward. That's pretty much the main appeal of XCOM.
>>
Play aggressive, never let the aliens get a turn unless they are stuck in overwatch traps/suppressed
>>
>>383775692

This

It's always been like that. You're meant to get your guys wasted by AYYs, because that's what the mechanics are made for.

It's not a Jagged Alliance clone where you can get through the whole thing without anyone dying if you play reasonably smart.
>>
>>383775692
not true, this isnt Darkest Dungeon
Losing 4-6 people on a Commander difficulty run is the average, hardly as many as you make it out to be
>>
>>383775885
>is the average
according to what statistics?
>>
>>383775945
The stats screen which appears after you beat the game lists averages for people who completed it on your difficulty level.
>>
>>383778524
Not OP, but those stats are worthless, because people just savescum. Those stats only have meaning for ironman and even ironman can be cheated.
>>
>>383775584
Stun/freeze and keep shooting, they always fuck off after losing 1/4 base HPs.
Or just give everyone proximity mines if you don't want rulers even having a chance of retreating.
>>
>>383774990
You just need to advance 6-8 soldiers to final rank, after that you literally can't lose unless you do something completely retarded.
>>
>>383775858
What I like about Jagged Alliance and 7,62 High Calibre is working with/around wounded team members. The medic rushing to help, others laying down fire. Especially in 7,62 where bleedouts and knockouts happen. In X-COM everyone just dies! Boom; you're dead!
>>
>>383775692
I haven't played 2 yet, but in one you had to build an A-team with a B-team ready if someoen fucks up. You Had to keep your A-Team alive (at the cost of a B-team life) otherwise you were fucked. Did they change something?
>>
I quit it for good after missing a 98% chance shot and then getting killed with a crit from disoriented sectoid while being in full cover.
I know it's just RNG but yeah nah fuck that.
>>
>>383774990
>Veteran

You're an absolute faggot kill yourself. Ive been playing long war 2 on legedn ironman
>>
Can you recommend any balance mods for leaders? Something like move-one-turn-attack-on-another? Only sureway to beat them otherwise is just squadsight abuse
>>
>timed missions
This game is completely shit. I'd rather play the first one.
>>
>>383783067
There is a mod that makes them bearable and fair.
>>
>>383782163
Nigga, give everyone proximity mines, leaders die to them even quicker than regular enemies since they move over them more often.
You also have freeze bombs and that stun weapon to make them even more miserable.
>>
>>383774990
>because I wasted good research time on autopsies
The only autopsy worth a shit is faceless, the rest you can wait until they become instant.
You surely done goofed, should have went for communications first and weapons second.
>>
>>383782163
Yeah the "disable DLC" option.
It fucking sucks. So do the other DLCs for that matter. Hopefully this new one won't be as disappointing.

Disabling DLC in the menu just removes the ebin "story mission", you'll still have leaders in the game.
>>
>>383783067
>>383783123
timed missions are literally the only way to make the game any challenging

Watch JoINrbs, one of the best xcom players, play LW2 gatewatcher. It's literally just move a couple inches, overwatch all, move a couple inches, overwatch all, move a couple inches, overwatch all.

>>
>>383783589
>timed missions are literally the only way to make the game any challenging
Because the base game mechanics are shit in the first place (pod system)
>>
>>383774990
>I'm at the point where you start seeing Mutons, and I can't get through a mission without either someone dying or save scumming.

Yeah you fucked up, you at least need to have the first tier of alien rifles to deal with mutons or its hard going.
>>
>>383783658
Nothing inherently wrong with pods, the problem is the only way to properly deal with them is by knowing entirely on how they function which most people don't and the game strictly doesn't tell you
>>
>>383774990
>Think it's because I wasted good research time on autopsies instead of guns and armor

Pretty much this OP.

Guns > Armor > Muton Autopsy > Anything else
>>
>>383775584
>>383775584
who dat ?????
>>
>>383783589
Or you can play like this:
>Rush, die, rush, die.
>play carefully, 0 turns left, mission failed
Yeah.
>>
>>383783631
It's not.
If you want them to never appear you need to leave DLC on and NOT go on that mission. Otherwise you can buy new weapons right from the start and rulers can appear as soon as right after the first retaliation.
>>
>>383774990
You should rush the second weapon tier asap.
>>
>>383783825
except people consistently beat the game in Iron Man/Legend so...?
>>
>trying to play the first one on classic + ironman
>mfw thinmen start to show up

I cant believe people actually finished this. The game goes from sometimes shit RNG to infuriating 100% bullshit
>>
>>383783825
Or maybe take decent team comp for missions.

Pretty much snipers are useless in most missions due to timer, needing to position them decently and still you're not guaranteed they'll do shit.

2-3 Nadiers, 2 Assaults and a Hacker is best composition for all timer related missions.

>scout with 1 of assaults
>second is for cleanup and going balls deep
>hacker for objectives and Long Range support
>nadiers blow up every cover leaving ayys for mercy
>>
>>383783865
I still don't believe you, that's incredibly stupid
>>
>>383783716
>Nothing inherently wrong with pods
Giving them a free move (and in some cases, free attack) on discovering them through YOUR line of sigh is fucking bullshit and is what makes overwatch crawling the objectively best way to deal with them without exception.Timed missions are a giant band-aid to try to fix that.

Pods wouldn't be quite so bad if they had their own line of sight.

Its not that hard you can wipe fucking hard and still get through the campaign on commander difficulty, legend is fucking impossible though if I manage to get good rng I can make it to when stun lancers show up and at that point I can never deal enough damage to kill them, this was before any dlc though.
The image is from a commander run with long war mods on (not the full expansion just aliens + classes + lasers), if you aren't playing ironman you aren't learning from your mistakes.
>>
>>383783567
if you activate and never play the story mission they can never appear I believe
>>
Asking a real question:

LW1 or LW2?
>>
>>383788125
LW1 for sure. LW2 has WAY too much emphasis on stealth fuckery to the point where it feels like you're playing xcom: metal gear edition. I don't understand why the creators embraced possibly the worst part about Xcom 2 and actively punishes players for trying to go loud.

If you want to blow up waves of ayys and get into awesome fire fights, you play the first one. If you want to spam low timer 1 soldier missions where you never get to take a single shot because taking any more than 3 troops with heavy weapons and armor is suicide, play 2.
>>
>>383774990
Wait until you start seeing Gate Keepers and Sectapods!

Near the end of the game these fuckers are basically in every single mission you do.

Alien ruler confirmed for nerf in WotC. Firaxis admitted that they may have gone to far in a few places.
>>
>>383782163

Just use fire, acid, or poison. They take damage on every one of their turns, which adds up VERY quickly.
>>
I honestly want an alien to play as instead of an advent freedom fighter. Why can't we play as Vipers?

Aren't they super intelligent, or something?
>>
>>383783873
Those people dont count because they dont have a life, and its just a game brah, u mad?, etc.

People who suck at using their noggin for once will always try to blame something besides their incompetence, dont waste good logic on them.
>>
>>383788832
They were only a problem if you didn't have the means of dealing with them on that mission. There was just no real counter play against them other then just shoot and hope they go away. Now we have options. Only aggressive actions will have rulers react and only from their line of sight. So Grenade spam out of their vision will be an option. Squadsight snipers will also be ultra powerful against them.

Much better then shooting them with the Bolt Caster and hoping that it stuns them.
>>
>>383774990
Keep is simple, upgrade your weapons.
>>
>>383784559
> if you aren't playing ironman you aren't learning from your mistakes.
That is as untrue as pretending that people who try ironman and quit after failing to make any progress learned anything from being goaded into playing something that does not suit them in the first place.
If you are capable of learning from your mistakes you will learn regardless of the gametype.
>>
>>383784245
How much was Enemy Within? This DLC is basically X-com 2's version of EW.

>>383784292
At least they said that Sparks are getting a ton of buffs in War of the Chosen.
>>
>>383788997
They are also extremely loyal to the Elders and love committing atrocities. You'll have challenge mode for all your alien playing needs.

LW1 all the way.
>>
>>383779089

>he fell for the disorient meme

sectoids don't suffer an aim penalty from flashbangs, it just interrupts their psionics

OP, biggest tip is that if you only have a low % chance to hit, it might be better to overwatch than to potentially waste the shot, or if your soldiers are close to the enemy but in half cover then use hunker down

basically if that unit can't get a guaranteed kill or do damage, hunker/overwatch and always have them in high cover whenever possible

>>
>>383789397
When it first came out? 30 dollars I think. Really this is 2k being the greedy fucks they are. Xcom 2 doesn't have microtransactions, so 2k is making Firaxis charge more for it to make up the cost.
>>
>>383789489

I know they weren't able to recover the eggs but what about the vipers from the alien hunters dlc when you do that mission?
>>
>>383789528
>sectoids don't suffer an aim penalty from flashbangs

Stop lying, it effects them just the same. The thing about the aim and crit roll is that they are the same roll. So if you have a 3% chance to be hit and a 7% chance to be crit, if they roll that 7% you will be hit AND crit. Lowering aim might make you harder to be hit, but in those stupid instances where they do hit it will almost always be a crit because of this. Just download the EU dice roll mod to make them separate rolls again and you will see less of this bullshit.

>>383789613
The Vipers by nature are just evil, that was talked about in EU.

It depends on if the melee guy is in cover on your turn. Overwatch shots have a small aim penalty, but its less than trying to shoot through cover. Also, overwatch affects the aliens decision making. Once you understand the AI, you can force them to take certain actions through soldier positioning and overwatch.

>>
>>383791448

You don't have to rush immediately to finish. There's no benefit to completing the mission with 4 turns left on the timer vs 1.

You could have just got unlucky and spawned really far away from the objective or in a weird spot.
>>
>>383793017
They run away when you deal 25% of their max hp.
>>
>>383788730

Ruler DLC actually makes the game easier on vanilla.

I've been told by people that full Shinobi + Specialist stealth runs where you evac 1 turn after reveal is still possible in 1.4.
>>
I would recommend LW2 1.4 if you only experienced it when it released because the stealth emphasis (or brokeness) has been heavily revamped.

I personally think the infiltration mechanic makes the game flow so much better and makes sense for a game like xcom instead of just consistently having one or two squads who steamroll everything. It also makes the resource management a legitimate strategic layer.
