>still play it like a loss of innocence story

What were they getting at?
>>
Kojima says BB is better than Solid because he has "feelings".
>>
He wasn't even redpilled on murica's shittiness at that point
>>
>>383741547
How should he surprised.
>>
just had a wank lads
>>
>>383740306
He never had to kill someone who actually mattered to him before.

>>383741061
Which is bullshit. Snake had PTSD due to the events of Zanzibar. He was upset about Campbell keeping shit from him. He was clearly distraught about Meryl and Grey Fox. In MGS4, he was obviously going through a very difficult time of his life.
>>
>>383740306
>Loss of innocence
Loss of faith in his country*
>>
>>383741061
Snake, Snake had a hard life
>>
>>383741987
what were you wankin to
>>
>>383742078
Snake's biggest issue was that he was too self aware to end up the way Big Boss did, so he had no real outlet for his pain. Big Boss directed his pain in the form of rebellion and revenge. Snake couldn't really do the same.
>>
>>383740306
I mean, the MILF who was like a mother to him that he was also banging allowed her country to kill her because they fucked up by giving nukes to a megalomaniac commie. That might fuck a person up a bit.
>>
>>383741061
Kojima says BB is better because Fukushima had bigger influence on writing Solid's personality than him.
>>
>>383742426
>he was also banging
This isn't true at all.

That is only a word The Boss used. The Cobra Unit probably did some really fucked up shit in their time Snake never even thought of at that point. And she used the word innocence in comparsion to them.

Jack was emotionally stunted and subjected to constant conflict since he was a teenager. He was 15 when he fought in the Korean War. During this period, his only consistent mentor and parental figure was The Boss.

Her betrayal was likely the first time he had to question his allegiance.

Doesn't mean they didn't have sex you moron
Have you never had non-romantic sex with someone you cared about and respected?
>>
>>383740306

It's not loss of innocence in general, the theme is the choice between loyalty to your own self or loyalty to your country.
>>
>>383748880
No, I've neved had sex before.
>>
Did the Cobra Unit actually defect with Boss, unaware that she was being a super special quintuple agent?

Or were they just tired of life and said, fuck ot, let's get killed by John Doe?
>>
>>383749693

Their loyalty was in the Boss, not the mission, or honor or even their country.
>>
>>383749891
That didn't explain the question at all...
>>
>>383749971
ur dumbie
>>
>>383749693
I think they all had their own reasons. The End wanted to enjoy one last battle against a worthy opponent. The Fury just wanted everything to burn. The Pain and Fear embodied the emotions of pain and fear in battle, so I don't think it's hard to imagine why they did what they did. Given their respective emotions, I don't think either of them enjoyed war.
>>
>>383742078
Snake had a hard life
>>
>>383750206
Still doesn't explain anything. I'll just stick to your first sentence there and consider it a plothole.
>>
>>383750287
Big Boss and Zero spent their lives making constant mistakes. Snake spent his life fixing their mistakes and suffering their karma.
>>
>>383750586
They went in fully expecting to die, man.
>>
>>383740306
He's innocent in the sense that he belives in his country and his mission.

Snake Eater changes all that.
>>
>>383741061
Sort of. A lot of Japs are into stuff like souls/spirits and superstitions and shit. Since Snake is a clone and unnatural, and by their standards he technically wouldn't have a soul. BB is the original and therefore more "human". I think Kojima mentioned it somewhere. Solid is more likeable than BB imo.

they never had to defect because they never swore loyalty to the country. they pledged their allegiance to the boss, they were her unit. whatever they did, she did. technically they were disbanded in the 40s and were reassembled during the virtuous mission. the fury and the sorrow were actually soviets, but the cobra unit was there to fight nazis, so there was collaboration allowed between the USSR and the States
>>
>>383752036
not true. consider that your great strength is also your greatest weakness. Kojima's desire to be a filmmaker is what has always pushed MGS to be something unique and special. But Kojima has also benefitted from being reeled in. We'll see how death stranding turns out...

>>
>>383755565
alright, i'll slow it down for you. "their loyalty was to the boss." the bosses weren't very well fleshed out (but the bosses always were this way) so the motivation is simple. they don't even mention what any of them were doing in the time between when they were disbanded and snake eater. though what we do know about them is they want to die in battle, so if the boss comes around with a purpose to carry emotion into battle, they hop on board. we've seen how charismatic and commanding the boss is, so why would anyone not go by her suggestion?

Agreed. Solid was well aware of the bullshit he's been put through, but didn't have the drive and independence to go out guns blazing. The fact he nearly an heros is proof positive.

Meanwhile, Big Boss decides to start a mercenary force and then take on the illuminati.

Then he brainwashes some random medic to do the same goddamn thing. So basically, Snake is so pussified that he has less agency that some random field medic.

I'm just kidding, I love solid.
>>
>>383755004

Corrupted JCOS, All outsiders directly involved with the conspirators were dead by that point with Anderson and Clark keeping the show running in David's (Zero) absence, Solidus could have literally been a charismatic Donald Trump in the public eye for all anyone knows.

The only question I really wanted an answer to at this point is just what their actual ranks and roles were prior to the CIA. Like what the hell was the Boss supposed to be? You explain that away and you could make definitive sense of her relationship with "Jack" (John Doe isn't his real name; He was joking with Paramedic--His real name, like the phantom, is never stated).

Correction--I meant to type JCS but it could be the full body or the DJS, CJCS, vice chairman, or any combination.

I'll have to correct myself then. I can tell you Solid Snake's dialogue isn't in the NA release. As to the sword itself I actually don't remember whether or not it was exclusive to the Japanese version, but Snake's dialogue definitely was. They never implemented it in English.

Snake is someone who tries not to kill unnecessarily. In the beginning of the Big Shell chapter, he leaves a bunch of guards unconscious, but none of them dead. However, when he feels that it's unavoidable, he'll kill without hesitation, as seen in Arsenal Gear. He also pukes and loses a huge chunk of psych if he kills too much in MGS4.

Snake personally believes that killing is wrong, no matter the reason. However, he also knows that sometimes, he can't really avoid it. All he can do is try to take as few lives as possible.

That's in every game since MGS1 though. The game finds a way for the characters to die, but you not be responsible if you went non-lethal.

Like the cobras exploding in MGS3 if they're defeated. Ethically speaking, after the first one exploded and you talk to your codec team Naked should have known the repercussions for beating any of them is death regardless of the actions he takes. Engaging in a fight and simply surviving is a death sentence for them, so it's really just the spirit of how you fight them that matters.

Which in all things being fair, puts you at a disadvantage because lethal armaments are more plentiful and more powerful against most of the bosses. So you're fighting clean for something that's ethically been decided by someone else, they all go into the fight knowing that if they lose they're going to die. So what difference should it make to you as the player?

MGS4 has a bunch of shootout scenes, where I just - quite honestly - feel like a cuck for choosing the non-lethal method.

I mean. I'm on a motorbike, chased by mercs with MGs and rocket launchers.

would Snake truly rely on a tranquilizer gun and some flashbangs in this situation, instead of spraying them full of lead?

MGS is about allowing the people of the world to choose for themselves and not be led by doctrines or weapons or genetic destiny or any of that, you fool

That's what The Boss wanted, for people to fight for what they believe in rather than just for the country they live in

Because if she didn't the world would've been destroyed in nuclear war.

Because she also doesn't want the threat of nuclear war to rule the world. She "defected" in order to learn what she could about Shagohod, and when things escalated, the only way to prevent Russia from launching nukes was to take the fall.
Peace Walker was all about deterrence, that's why Boss' consciousness killed the Peace Walker. What she stands for more than anything is ensuring that forces over people's heads don't control them, especially not nukes.
If the Russians are building a mobile nuclear launch platform, yeah she's gonna stop them.

That's the tragedy of Big Boss forming the Patriots. He completely misunderstood her intent. He created the exact type of thing she opposed from the start in an effort to follow her will.
He created a nation of soldiers to give them purpose, thinking that "the survivor will carry on the fight" meant that soldiers will never be free from battle, when what she meant was that the one who survives is the one who gets to live out their own beliefs.
What she says and what Armstrong say ultimately aren't that different, it's just that Armstrong was an extremist and, again, was becoming a one-man illuminati to accomplish it.

She believes in self determination in the same way Solid does. Don't let your genetics, your past, or any of that determine what you do. Not "fuck everybody but me."

I liked Kiefer but he never really sold the 'charismatic mercenary leader' like Akio did. The cutscene after you rescue DD is a good example of this, you hear Akio chuckle and joke around whereas Kiefer just sounds like he's against the whole thing.

Overall I think Akio does a better job of personifying the legend of Big Boss, while Kiefer sounds like a worn-out soldier who needs a rest.

That's because they underestimated how fucking good Venom was. He killed Skull Face, he killed the Skulls, he created Outer Heaven, he was fucking unstoppable. The only reason they even got close at the hospital was because Venom's body was still atrophied to shit. Yet in the week of transit frome Crete to Afganistan, Venom did years worth of physical therapy and went from sticklet to top tier aesthetic body. Only the greatest soldier who ever lived was able to take his life.
>>
>>383766268

Because Big Boss is shit. That's what the whole second half of TPP was about. Big Boss didn't even sneak through Tselinoyarsk without Skull Face cleaning up after him.

>>383765958

Kiefer was good when he got lines to say. His best performance was in Episode 51 when he tells Eli to blame him. If only Kojima didn't go retarded after watching Drive and cut the dialogue then Kiefer's Big Boss would have been better receieved.

Maybe he could have, but the point is his life was at risk so they threw someone else under the bus to take the heat off of him. Zero didn't give a fuck about whether Venom could handle himself against Skull Face or not since he was expendable, just like everyone else in that hospital. Wasn't the point of Les Enfants Terribles that Zero wanted to preserve Big Boss' meme? It's pretty much the same idea. Besides, Big Boss makes a conscious decision to leave everything to the body double anyway, he never objected to the idea since it's for his personal benefit. Think about all of the horrible shit Venom Snake endures throughout TPP, all of the hatred from Skull Face and Eli that he has to suffer through against his own will, all so his commander can hide out of sight and fulfll his dream.
>>
>>383762185
I think that Snake would try not to kill if he can help it, but if the risks are too high, then he would go for it without thinking twice.

Remember, Snake is an SSM specialist. Get in, make sure no one knows you're there, leave as little evidence of your presence as possible. You can't do that if you leave a trail of corpses in your wake. It's basically part of the job description to kill as little as possible. That's why you get penalized for killing.

All of 500k. And it's not like that would've helped the game from being released unfinished anyway.
>>
>>383768001
>Wasn't the point of Les Enfants Terribles that Zero wanted to preserve Big Boss' meme?

No, Zero wanted to preserve Big Boss's genes. The whole series has a running thread of genes vs memes and memes are what win out. Solid ends up being superior to Liquid because he inherited Big Boss' dominant memes instead of his dominant genes for example. Venom is an inheritor of Big Boss' memes and that's what the whole propagating of the legend stuff is about. In the end, Big Boss' genes weren't anything special anyway.
>>
>>383768829
Snake kills if necessary, but I don't think he'd go out of his way to shoot to death a girl whose only method of attacks is hugs.

I don't know, I feel like Snake is pretty fluid in the sense that he becomes whatever the game needs him to be in that moment. In MGS1 he goes from showing very little regard for Meryl's life to actively preaching to Mei Ling that you "have to allow yourself to fall in love with someone."

Liquid's "you enjoy all the killing" line was directed at the player as much as Snake himself, you could even say that Snake was finally allowed to be free at the end of MGS4 BECAUSE there weren't going to be any more sequels. Big Boss' desires for a 'war without end' are interesting in that video games themselves largely thrive off of war, we enjoy the act of murdering virtual soldiers even if the character we are controlling suffers for it. I guess what I'm getting at is that we the players are just as responsible for manipulating Snake as much as Big Boss, The Patriots, or anyone else.
>>
>>383769423
I feel like the Boss's will just skipped a generation. Snake and Otacon never met her, but they're basically her true legacy.
>>
>>383740306
Well I mean he was fighting and killing foot soldiers that he wasn't even at war with, they were following orders, and so was he, and that's kind of what it boils down to.
Snake wasn't important to the US government, he was expendable, that's why he got dropped in the ass end of Russia with nearly no equipment besides fatigues, a shitty tranq, and a makeup kit. He had to do things he had only done in training, eat all kinds of shit, crawl through tunnels and caves infested with every repulsive creature you could think of. He's had to kill people and hide their bodies.
Not to mention, he had to kill his mentor and trainer, who is also the only woman he'd ever loved, and all of her brothers in arms. Not that they didnt all ask for it, the point being he's been through a lot, only to learn he kinda-sorta got double crossed by EVA.
It ain't checkers my friend, Its chess.
>>
>>383769905
Absolutely kino

I agree.
>>
>>383769905
Well, in MGS2 he did say that he believes killing is wrong no matter the reason. Snake is pretty professional, he wouldn't kill if he didn't have to. He didn't have to kill anyone in the Big Shell, but when they got swarmed by enemies in Arsenal Gear, he did what had to be done and wiped them all out.

If Snake is just sneaking around a facility, I think he'd try to sneak by without attacking anyone, and that's basically what he's expected to do. The point is to leave no evidence of his presence; that's why on-site procurement is a thing. Ideally, he should get by with shooting hos weapon as little as possible, whether it's an assault rifle or a tranquilizer gun.

But with tougher opponents like Ocelot or Vamp, I think he wouldn't risk it and go for the kill. I'm sure he went all out on the Beast forms of the B&Bs as well. But the Beauties are slow and can only try to hug him. The hugs hurt, but they're nothing he can't handle. So I figure it would be easy for him to just tranq them.

I agree that Snake himself would avoid taking lives wherever possible, but MGS frequently blurs the line between game and reality to the point where it is exactly that: a self-aware video game, and like many other video games, that involves shooting guns and killing virtual soldiers. Regardless of whether Snake realises it or not, he is a tool to be used at OUR disposal, for the sake of OUR enjoyment. The stories in these games don't take place within a vaccum, the reason Snake makes it through his missions is because he had us controlling him, which is why previous events are recalled exactly as they were, in that PS1 game from 1998.

MGS2's entire plot is practically based off of this idea, outright implying that MGS1 was a VR Mission that we all completed. It's difficult to make out in this image, but as Snake says "War as a video game-- What better way to raise the ultimate soldier?" you see a swarm of player-controlled Snakes onscreen. MGSV seemed to attempt something similar, with Ahab having "experienced all of your missions on record", but Venom Snake quite literally booting up the original Metal Gear on cassette tape is a clear indication that all of this is taking place within a fictional video game, and that's only one of many examples.

The Metal Gear universe starts when you boot up the game, and stops when you switch it back off, which is why it doesn't matter when things like dates and smaller plot details don't line up, that isn't the point. This isn't literature, it's an old video game series that began in 1987 with dumb B-movie references and character names like Big Boss and Solid Snake, and by some twist of fate continued on for 30-odd years after the fact.

Why, because of 'Iroquois Pliskin' which isn't even spelled the same way? I've seen that film and outside of the general tone I didn't think it had much in common with MGS, unless there's something I'm missing. Kojima has cited City of Glass as his main inspiration for MGS2.
