That's the point. The glasses serve as a way of making him look distinct in promotional material, since no other (animal) character in the (main) series has glasses. Without them he'd just look like a boring recolor.

The game would probably be getting a more positive reception if Mania wasn't around because people wouldn't comparing the two. I'm looking to the Modern Sonic levels and playing as an OC in an official game will fun just to see all the crazy shit people make. Classic's le els will be the worst part of the game but still decent.
