I disagree. The enemies were cannon fodder, sure, but I prefer a game where just fighting an enemy is fun even if they're not really a threat, as opposed to a game where the combat feels fine but gets tiring early on and the enemies are even less threatening. The story and characters were at least on par with NieR, I'd say, and arguably better. The save deletion was just a rehash of an old trick, which I didn't like, but at least it was done a bit differently. The boss fights weren't great, but I'd say the same of the fights in NieR as well, the only interesting thing about any of them was the context you got about them on Route B, but Automata had that as well.

I can see that, I thought the combined Ko-Shi and Ro-Shi were memorable for the character switching and the rising up the tower, as was the A2 and 9S fights, which was too easy but still fun. All of the Adam and Eve fights were good too for their settings and how they were very different each fight. I think it's pretty apples and oranges in what they accomplish.

Automata has more polish in gameplay and quest design, but I might give Nier 1's story a slight edge for having more lively hub areas and the Nier and Weiss dynamic.

In the case of NieR, I agree, but in Automata, although I prefer it, I feel like some of the info about 9S and 2B before the events of the game really should have been explained in the game. The examples of 2B executing 9S that are int eh game, for example, don't really reflect her job as well as they should. The real tragedy is that she's killing him and removing his memory because he knows too much, but when the Black Box reaction was done it was a sacrifice for the both of them and it wasn't like she had to betray him, as she normally would have. Then when she chokes him, even if he just went back to The Bunker, he would have lost very few memories, and while it's still fucked up that 2B has to kill him, it doesn't really show the extent of the tragedy. I can do without knowing about the origins of Project YoRHa and whatnot, but I feel like information about this relationship which is pivotal to the games plot should be in the actual game.

Considering that Zero's beaten at the end of D3 I thought her appearance at the end was more for showing implying how the Watchers and/or Queen Beasts multiply and spread their influence through the flowers rather than showing that Zero was the same beast in Drakengard 1.

I honestly had more fun with combat in Nier than I did in Automata. Impaling enemies with dark execution and mowing down enemies with the spear never really got old for me.

The storyline is pretty interesting. Also, it's simply more high-profile because of the fact that the Bayonetta/Metal Gear Rising devs were on board with this. In my case, their names were the original reason for my interest in this game. I'm now working on acquiring a PS3 and playing through the rest of his work, since I liked his writing style. Might regret it, but who cares.

Yeah, I'm aware of how frustrating his older works can be. But then again, I've played Persona 3 Portable, Gravity Rush, and Life is Strange before. I'm okay with unpolished gameplay as long as the storyline/artwork/music grab my attention.

Nier 1 might not be perfect but I like it a lot. I never played Drakengard 1 or 2 but I liked 3 enough, although it did get very samey and tedious midway through.

That's what each of Automata's novellas are about. All of this stuff is already in the game. These stories don't give you any real information about the world or the story that you wouldn't already get by playing the game. Nier, on the other hand, has tons of content that only exists in books, short stories, and a drama CD. Even Automata's stage play, which was written and performed long before the game came out (before it was even announced, I think?) as its own stand-alone story, is IN the game as one of the novel sections.

Whether or not Automata is still any good is up to the individual, as is whether Nier's side content is actually essential to the main plot, but don't try to say Automata is somehow more scattered than the first game.
