I was playing it for a while with friend but we decided that it would be better to just wait for release because without any voices it was just lacking the "feel" the enhanced edition had
but it looks great so far

It may not be able to surpass the level of nostalgia we feel towards those games and the enjoyment we have had had with them, but its more modernized, has a ton of mechanics not included in those games, balanced to be challenging but fair, and the best rpg battle system ive seen in these types of games.

Either way, Pillars will most certainly not be better than DOS. The gameplay in comparison to DOS and the sheer level of choice it gives you is outclassed.

I've enjoyed it thoroughly and I've played through it probably three times. Wait until it releases so you don't burn yourself out on it. If you want to get a feel for the game, by all means downloaded it. Plus if you play it now and realize you don't like it, you can always refund it once it releases.

They had a cool murder mystery thing going on but the rest of the game is garbage. Which is a shame because the co-op and the combat are all fantastic; if they had competent writers it could easily be one of my favorite rpgs

The combat feels good when hits the right balance, it allows you to solve certain things in fun and creative ways, but way too often it was also too hard or too easy.

Not sure anymore if leveling really is a good thing in games. Seems to cause more issues than it can benefit.

Because they try to dabble in too many classes, and if you focus on pure songs, then they are just a generic party buffer. Nobody wants to play that and you could be a Priest/Mage and accomplish that and more.

Because crpg's are based on tabletop games and on table top Bards are usually really crappy because the 'master of none' thing sucks in games that focus on character specialization.
The only game I can think of where Bards are good (and in this case they're fucking stupidly powerful) is D&D 5E

Sawyer made Chanters like bards but less shit, but his autism prevented him from making them quick-showers in combat so by the time they built up the requisite number of chants the combat was over (unless you were an autist doing PoTD Triple Crown which apparently involved running circles until your summon move was ready)
