Mods are something you have to seek out. An OS is something that most people will have on their computer out of the box. 99% of the time, that OS will be Mac or Windows. I'm sure a lot of people that buy/use a computer don't even know they'd normally have to pay for an operating system. Also there's is a paid option for mods alongside free, it's called donations

Linux is an outdated meme. If I didn't care about games I'd switch to FreeBSD. Apple sucks too, but your still better off using mac os than linux.

Pirating Windows and the free upgrade to 10 are free as in gratis, not free as in freedom. You are still being spied on even if you turn the telemetry switch off, the only way to not get fucked by MS is to block their domains at a router level since Win 10 clears your hosts file after every restart. Windows has been spyware ever since PRISM in 2007 (Vista and onward, possibly even the long term support patches for older operating systems) but 7 is the last usable piece of spyware that they released that doesn't restart on you and has a good sane GUI.
