He's been both since day one you idiot. He was so fearful of losing power he damned man to the Undead Curse. Humans were special compared to the Giants and the Lords. They could live in both the Age of Fire and the Age of Darkness, as they were both born from the Abyss and seemed fire.

Gwyn wasn't nice to his children very often. The NK is proof of that, so leaving Filianore forever ain't outta his possibilities, all so he could keep the Soul that started Humanity trapped.

tl;dr Gwyn was noble and a hero in one sense, but ruthless and cruel in another. It's what makes his character great. A God with the flaws of man.
