Even Tifa comments about how he seemed different and broken when she found him lying on the ground at the train station. Said he knew things he shouldn't, and didn't know things he should.

It was more a product of the mako poisoning, SOLDIER training, Jenova's Cells that fucked him up to the point his broken-ass memories started absorbing Zack's existence.

I'm actually glad it wasn't. I didn't even care that Aeris died, I never cared when a fictional character died except Big Boss ;_;7 but when I first played FF7 a few years back this twist genuinely shocked me. I'm glad I at least experienced that first hand.
