What's the right way to play this, in regards to dying, accumulating gold and getting power ups?

I guess you could say 'you can play it any way you want'; please, avoid that.

Right when I started and saw you could only upgrade when dying I played carelessly, getting gold and dying a lot to get upgrades, then I realised every time you died upgrades are more expensive so I basically mess up my own game. Apparently trying to level up all classes isn't very effective, it would be much better to focus on one type. Is that right? What about those skills that make you gain gold faster? What about equipment?

Any tips are welcome, I'm too dumb for this.

The game is as much about risk management as it is about platforming and killing things.

Don't go after every reward in a playthrough. The point, at first at least, is to survive as long as possible and earn as much as you can.
If you enter a room and you think you are likely to die, try to find another way around it.

Also you need a specific gameplan when you do go into a level. If you are gathering resources then yeah, gamble with the miner OR choose barbarian (since he's the tankiest unit) and explore.
If you are thinking about taking on the boss specifically, then maybe pick a unit that you think is going to be best at dealing with the boss.

Just take each playthrough carefully and slowly at first. Eventually you'll know how to handle most types of rooms and you will fly through to where you need to go. Especially after some upgrades.

(I'd focus on Barbarian first. Or Miner if you are skilled and a bit of a gambler. Knight's ok too)

Then you got traits. Most are annoying, but you only know how much so if you pick them all at least once. Then in another playthrough you will know how to pick the lesser evil.

Sometimes it's better to have a barbarian that's color blind, than a Knave that's perfectly fine.

I beat two bosses before dying for the first time.

Then I didn't have a single run where I beat a boss for a few gameplay hours.

I dunno man, just unlock everything and have fun.

Is this considered a 'good' rogue-like? I played 6 hours of it and just couldn't enjoy it. I don't play a lot of rogue-likes, it's a genre which I get burnt-out on really fast. I played and enjoyed Dead Cells too, but /v/ was shitting on that pretty hard the last few days.

I think its average. It lacks any real depth and the gameplay is repetitive but its great if you want something simple to chill out playing for a couple of hours

Another real good tactic in this game is this:

Conserve the healing items. If you are at full health or are at a decent amount dont break the health pots. Just remember where they are and backtrack to them if you need to heal.

This can extend your run significantly. Again, resource and risk management.

When I played it I don't remember having any specific strategy in mind, like at all. I also don't remember upgrades getting more expensive as you die, maybe they get more expensive as you buy them? The game felt like a huge grind with the amount of progression in it.

The strategy I used to get through several NG+ quickly was to use the rogue class and stealth through rooms while getting to the bosses as quickly as possible to take them out. Enemy rooms are much harder to fight than the bosses and each + for your game increases the difficulty but you get so much more money from random enemies the higher you go.

no. Try Rogue. Seriously. It still holds up today if you can get past the ascii and controls. Most things considered true roguelikes (Nethack, DCSS, etc) are more nethacklikes since nethack introduced the concept of tons & tons of content like race/class, spellcasting and complex interactons with everything. When I say complex interactions I mean specifically things like picking up a cockatrice corpse (a monster that turns anyone it touches into stone) with gloves then using the corpse as a weapon turning random monsters into stone.
