The game is a mishmash of great ideas and horrible executions. But honestly, it lives up to, if not surpasses, the Mother series in the "lolsorandum RPG" genre, but that's only because I don't think too highly of the Mother series itself. The fundamental flaw of both games is that they want to be quirky storybook movie-games, and sacrifice the gameplay to do so.

First off the game is not as open as most of the rabid fans advertise. There are not many creative ways of finishing the game and most of them involve targeting specific characters for death.

The game doesn't offer multiple difficulty configurations. You get basically an easy mode and a hard mode, that's about it.

There is very little challenge behind normal enemies and once you find what tickles them, they become a pushover. That pseudo bullet hell system doesn't add the challenge it would need to make fights any different. So it's really simplistic and underwhelming as an RPG.

The game encourages you not to take the middle ground and instead try to go for the extremes because there's no reward for it.

The characters are just a product of the author watching too much Anime. There's no aspect to them that makes them really unique and the fanbase is stuck thinking so.

Sans complaining about your antics is pretty much the only thing the game has going for it. Other games have done such things before so it's not even a new thing.

And finally, while the music is not bad, it's clearly unoriginal.

If anything, it's the composition (and what is done with it) that makes a song unique and well-done, and Toby Fox made a great collection of leitmotifs that span an entire game -- something that pleased me greatly. In fact, Toby deserves extra credit for the fact that his "chiptunes" were blended heavily with real instrumentation. He has essentially dual-genred successfully without making his pieces sound inauthentic.

So much fucking this. A lot of negativity surrounding Undertale isn't really the game's fault. Big surprise, the worst thing about a fanbase is the fanbase themselves.

That's not to say the game isn't shit sometimes. A lot of the jokes (most involving Alphys) fall totally flat, Genocide route is overly edgy, and even though the feel good pacifist ending is fun, it's a little too anime for my liking. And for a game that wants to show off talking to monsters, it should have more depth, like Shin Megami Tensei

I used to LOVE Undertale actually, but I acknowledged it had the worst fanbase ever. It's like it specifically was designed to.

The cult nature of the game attracted the most annoying parts of the Earthbound community and no other parts.

It attracted parts of the Homestuck community since its creator did homestuck movies.

It attracted furries.

It attracted SJWs thanks to featuring non-binary gendered characters.

It attracted the obsessive secondary nature of the Touhou fanbase.
The game was almost specifically designed to mix every terrible fanbase into one. one and a half years later, even though I loved the game and beat it at least 10 times, I cannot go back and enjoy the game simply because the fandom ruined it for me.
