Do you ever think we'll see a major mid-generation shift in controller design again?
DS3 is the perfect controller

Hopefully not, because there's not a need for one. Forcing "innovation" where none is needed just leads to contrived shit in a desperate effort to hook casuals with a new novelty that ultimately performs less well than the existing tech.

good answer desu
new vive controllers look sick
Not really because the amount of funcions we have with controllers is more than enough for whatever vidya is made.
More functions have always been 'more ability slots' and that's easily done with holding triggers for different functions on face buttons.
Unless VR really explodes in popularity, I don't suspect we'll see any major shift ever again. 5th gen's shift was because video games as a whole were going 3D, so controllers had to adapt to this.

They tried it with kinect, it worked.... okayish. I mean the sales, not the unit's accuracy.
The issue is you will either have a split user base like what we are seeing with PSVR and games only available on that platform, or you have to incorperate some backwards compatibility with old hardware like what they did with the genesis 3/6 button controller or the standard PS controller to Dualshock 1.
The answer is yes, since VR is is and they are moving to new hand held control schemes. I'm not a fan of VR myself, but even I can see that if it succeeds it will require a fundamental shift in interaction. Even the controllers we have now seem ill equipped, but will likely see future iterations be more functional.
