Pretty sure we can thank Tetsuya Namura for that.
He got a cameo in KH1 while wearing Vincent Valentine's costume. That series's biggest theme being light vs dark, and cloud being portrayed as struggling to fight the darkness off. That darkness manifested into a physical being, him being the one of the games toughest optional bosses, Sephiroth.

It's an edgy story, and most players remember THAT version of cloud, followed by his movie adaptation which was based on KH Cloud.

The problem was that FF4 made it seem like being a Dark Knight was inherently a bad thing, but Baron had a Dark Knight corps and Cecil's father was a Dark Knight too, and he was a pretty cool guy.

Apparently only Cecil fails at being a Dark Knight and needs to become a Paladin, which is a shame because Darkness was a much better command than fucking low level white magic.

Which is fucking bonkers because in ff3, the game directly preceding 4, there were Warriors of Darkness who were 100% nice guys that helped the Warriors of Light fight the final boss.

FF3 is one of the most interesting games in the series because it was the only one to say "Hey guys Darkness isn't evil it's just misused" I'm still angry we haven't gotten a mainline FF where we play as the Warriors of Darkness to save the world from being destroyed by Light, I'd love to see what that would look like.
