>GREATEST GAME EVER
>HOLY FUCK THEY ENDED IT ON THAT!?
>WHERE IS HALF LIFE 3!?
>SO MUCH FUCKING LORE!!!
I finally got around to playing this thanks to the Steam sale and boy can I say this is the most overrated game I have ever played in my life. No this isn't being a contrarian or shitposting, this game is a solid 7/10. HL1 has FAR better gameplay, Portal games are where the good lore is at. Half Life 2 (episodes included) is a boring ass game that was a chore to sit through. I unironically played this game at night because it helped me sleep better.

Aside from GMan and some lore related references, I could not find myself enjoying any of it at all. 60% of this was "horde mode until objective was complete" and "LMAO DRIVING MISSIONS". Everywhere I look, if you criticize it, you're just a bad person. And don't get me started on the "i-it was good for it's time!" meme. There were FAR more enjoyable gameplay centered and story centered video games during that time. And holy fuck, that ending. WAS THAT IT!? That boring ass predictable ending was what got everyone desperate for the third episode? Seriously /v/, what did this game do to deserve such praise? I can't figure it out.
>>
You're too fucking young/late to have appreciated the game at the time of its release when most of the shit it did wasn't that prevalent in video games. Feel free to post examples of games that did the same thing but better around the time of its release or before.
Otherwise, you simply just didn't like the game like others. And that's fine, but there's no need to be such a pretentious, black sheep about it, like you have above average tastes.

Great argument. You're so cool aha.

Time for some legitimate historical perspective:

>2004
>HL2 has been teased at for years
>Valve Time in full effect, "when it's done"
>New engine that's going to make goldsrc look like the Atari 2600
>MOTHERFUCKING PHYSICS
>RISE AND SHINE MR. FREEMAN, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ASHES

Mostly it was hype for the new engine and a veritable shitton of mods that came with it. HL2 as an actual game was pretty shit and the thrill wore off pretty quickly (game was <$10 by 2007), but as a platform for modifications it was absolutely great.

I wonder how Valve would have felt if you told them that their game would be held to the standards of 2017, and gotten a 7/10.

I imagine they'd be pretty flattered.

It's the same year Far Cry came out. Nuff said.
Personally I always ignored Half Life 2 because of the cancerous DRM, which got only topped recently by always online shit like SimCity and Denuvo.

Where did I mention that I was using 2017 standards? I don't even imply it.
>>
>>383637219
Because you're playing the game for the first time, in 2017, and after you've gotten your expectations raised from people who played it years ago.
>>
>>383635345
It's been 13 years since it was released.
>>
>>383637121
On the basis that the campaign is a story driven fps with vehicles released around the same time period. Obviously there are a lot of differences but I think they're worth comparing.
>>

>>

truly the height of intelligent discussion
>>
>>383637331
>and after you've gotten your expectations raised from people who played it years ago.
Most of the praise it got years ago was from hype buildup than the game itself. Completely ignoring all the bullshit surrounding it it's not as good as HL1 and most of the work went into the engine rather than trying to make a fun game.
>>
>>383637132
>It's the same year Far Cry came out.
And Far Cry fucking sucks.
>>
>>383637519
They're apples and oranges, anon. They behave way too differently and the story wasn't exactly something people weren't familiar with at the time BF2 was released.
>>
>>383637331
I've played games from the 90's for the first time and loved them. I don't compare old games to modern day standards because that is retarded. I really enjoyed HL1 for example, HL2 was extremely boring though. You don't need to play a game when it releases to enjoy it. If that were the case, Crash would be a flop right now. Some games are good and some games aren't as good.
>>
>solid 7/10
>hated most of it
which is it, OP?
Also why do these contrarian threads always go overboard with hyperbole? It's never, "hl2 was overrated, it turned out to be a decent game but not amazing," it's always "hl2 is fucking shit boring as fuck"
>>
>>383635345
>my opinion on this game should be more important to the people whose opinion on the game I disagree with
The only objectively overrated thing in your post is your opinion itself.

A shitton of people liked it, who are you to say that they are wrong, and realistically, what are the chances that YOU are the one who will finally disprove them all?
>>
>>383637768
>don't call the game shit once in my post

You do realize 7/10 isn't the same as utter dogshit right? Did you not go to school or something? Games can be decent AND borgin. I know! Crazy right?

Why do people hate the vehicle sections so much in HL2? I never had a problem with them.

Also, the game only has like 2 notable 'horde mode until objective is complete' sections. One more if you count the one in ravenholm when Father Grigori is sending the lift up to you.
>>
>>383638353
If you didn't enjoy it at all then it's a 0/10 not a 7/10 above average.
>>
The technology was more impressive when the game was released. It's older than dirt now, so of course it no longer has that appeal.

I'm not going to pretend I love the game, though. The gameplay is all right, I guess, but really it's just another shooter.

The reason that people want a sequel is obviously not the gameplay, because you don't need another Half-Life game to shoot more aliens in a generic fashion. Just buy any other shooter. The reason that everyone begs for Half-Life 3 -- and this is what makes no sense to me at all -- must be the story. Yes, the barely existent story that Valve didn't even care enough to finish. Their level of giving a shit was so low that they couldn't even release one more DLC-sized episode to finish the planned trilogy. And the reason they didn't give a fuck was that the story was barely there. The story of the original Half-Life was a thin excuse for action, and most of what supposedly makes the story deep was retconned by subsequent games. Half-Life 2 is a generic post-apocalyptic scenario and the protagonist is literally the chosen one. Meanwhile, people wet themselves over how cool and mysterious "the G-Man" is, but he's mysterious just for the sake of being mysterious and the writers just use him to announce the end of each game when they run out of material.

I'm also confused by Half-Life 2's attempts to be immersive. First of all, the game shits all over that immersiveness when you enter a vehicle and realize that you're steering with telekinesis instead of using your hands. Secondly, and more importantly, replacing skippable cut scenes with unskippable non-gameplay is not an improvement. Being able to walk around (or sometimes just look around) during a conversation does not make the game so much more interesting that I'm okay with losing the ability to skip these conversations on my second playthrough. People have actually praised the game for not having cut scenes, but no, fuck you, cut scenes are better.

Sounds like damage control to me. I guess no one will ever get to truly classics like Mario 64. Man what a shame.

For the jeep specifically most of it is just driving with no combat or instantly killing things. The only breaks between driving are when you're forced to get out and solve a puzzle.

That was the first time I replied to you retard, I'm one of the people arguing that HL2 was bad. If you say a game wasn't enjoyable at all that doesn't mean you thought it was above average that means you thought it was bad. I have no idea what kind of argument you're trying to make here.

I played it about a year ago, straight after Half-Life 1, which was amazing. It was sluggish and boring as shit. People say " it was good for it's time" but I can't see that as a defense because it's predecessor was not only good for its time, but also pretty damn good today too. Episode 1 was OK, haven't played 2 yet. Still have Blue Shift and Opposing Force to go through.
>>
>>383638936
That's not really true, though. The jeep section has a ton of combat. There are several stops you make to fight Combine soldiers and gunships. It's not combat that's specifically inside of the jeep, but it does have a gauss gun attached that you can wreck soldiers and antlions with.
>>
>>383635345
>No this isn't being a contrarian or shitposting

Yes it is
>>
>>383639615
charged gauss is an instant kill and so is running over people. there's a lot of long sections of road where you're just driving to get to the end of the level without any real obstacles or detours.
>>
>>383639326
No, I'm with you there. I always loved the airboat part the most.
>>
Facial animations, faggot. If you think it's irrelevant, go play Mass Effect Andromeda.

I enjoyed HL1 a lot more personally, the weapons in HL2 are atrocious and I hate half of the chapters yet my favorite is Highway 17
>>
At the time it was groundbreaking. I remember I was late to the party (I got it when I got the orange box) and I was pretty blown away by everything in it. I remember watching my friend's brother play when I was younger and being in awe of the stuff you could do.

Yeah, these days it's unremarkable, but it set a standard and still being a solid 7/10 after all this time is very high praise.

I guess I see what you're saying, but it's not like you're driving for 3 minutes straight with nothing happening. It's pretty well-paced in terms of driving time versus combat/obstacles.

And I don't think it would make sense for the roads to super short. They're trying to illustrate a journey along the coast, and driving is supposed to be fun when you're in a fast dune buggy with a turbo boost and no other traffic on the road.
>>
>>383640445
A lot of people first played it in the Orange Box and still found it impressive, though it saw a few engine updates by that time.
What impressed me in 2005 is that my shitty prebuilt with a bad GPU even for the time ran the game better than any other game I played on the thing and also looked better.

It's true that episode 1 was not a very fun experience, but if you'd consider HL2 and its episodes to be one game (that's how I played them), then in that context episode 1 is a great segment! But I agree, if I had bought episode 1 by itself, I would've been let down big time.
