The reason we have these threads is the same reason we have Ceasar Vs NCR threads. Because we know basically nothing about one whole side of the equation because it was introduced in game and not actually written well. The Empire is old lore, as are the Altmer. We know all about them. We know what's going on between them. Based on what we know, we can make inferences about them.

But Ulfric is sort of just this angry nationalist who begins the game defeated by the Empire, and the only reason he's still at large is because an actual Deus Ex Machina rescues him and starts the plot of the game. After that he maintains a civil war that surely depleted Skyrim's human resources - though that doesn't necessarily mean defeat because there's historical evidence of stuff like this working out in ancient civilizations, since they didn't have the advantage of aircraft and motor vehicles to transport troops and supplies rapidly and a siege could stall an army for months.

But the game has no follow up. No matter who you win the war for, nothing happens after that. You don't do covert operations for Tulius nor Ulfric to undermine the Thalmor. You don't do anything. You just walk away from it knowing you wasted your time on a tedious series of "kill 'x' soldiers to win" sidequests where half the soldiers are your friends and are preventing more enemies from spawning because there's too much shit on screen already.
