This game is brutal. You will certainly get the mental challenge you're looking for. It was so hard that Atlus USA patched in a very easy mode. Like really, normal mode is a healthy challenge and hard mode, even after playing though the game several times, still kicks my ass.

You only really need to think on hard, free mode and the arcade mini game.
