I know a girl who put hundreds of hours into Skyrim, but she didn't like doing quests. She just lived in the game like it was The Sims, building houses and collecting books and stuff. Of those that qualify as playing "real" games, that is, not mobile/Facebook trash, there are a decent amount but they mostly play Pokemon, other popular JRPGs, MMOs (very high proportion of women here, relatively), and popular multiplayer games like LoL and Overwatch.
There aren't many that take a deeper interest in the hobby like /v/ expects, but women in general don't get very deep in to things from what I've noticed.

So to answer your question, I think they play the "hip" games: like lol, dota, everything you can monetize on twitch and it's casual enough. I don't think you'll ever find a gurrrrrl playing STALKER, or Arma, or Civ or SF or maybe even SC2: something that actually requires effort and time and it's hardly useful to achieve a goal that is not playing the game.

I am legitimately curious, and since you're on /v/ the probability of this is much higher so bear with me.

Do you have Gender Dysphoria? Or did you transition because you realized that being a girl has inherently different expectations and society treats you in a way that is preferential to you?
The reason I ask is because I have a close friend who did this, went full hormone therapy and surgery, then regretted it soon after and changed his name/pronouns back but the damage was done. He took his life soon after that.

I am in full support of people getting the treatment they need if they have legitimate gender dysphoria, I want to make that clear. But in cases such as my friend's, he was made to think that because his preferences were just not as manly (and he had insecurity issues) then he "must have been trans". It was a very "grass is greener on the other side" situation and this notion was positively reinforced by almost every single person he talked to. Any time anyone questioned it, they were yelled at and labelled a bigot (see: me) but now that my friend is gone I worry that this happens with other people too and nobody seems to care.

That being said, the only game I can truly say I've been matched up with a girl in "modern" gaming is Dota. Fem anon here. Nier: Automata's storyline was pretty memorable. Persona 5 is pretty great so far, too. But it's really more of a characters>overarching plot kind of game.

Personal favorite would be Witcher 3, though. It's the combo of familiar folklore, fantasy politics, and great art direction. Transistor is a second favorite, mostly for the artwork and the OST.

Anyway, as far as actual women gamers are concerned, the vast majority I've come across over the years have been in MMO's. Most of them have been pretty chill, but a few have been the typical attention whores that you read those "girl joins guild, everything goes to shit" horror stories about. It was always the younger girls that fell into the attention whore category. The older women (as in late 20's and up) have all been excellent guildmates.

They also gravitate around MOBA's, but the majority of those are attention whores. The actual women that play MOBA's keep themselves well hidden, and for good reason. The communities surrounding that genre are pure fucking cancer.
