The combat didn't bother me nearly as much as it seemed to bother some people. I tend to play a lot of fighiting games though so things like guarding, parrying and dodging come naturally to me.

One of my favourite games. Though I read a lot about the combat and was confused because I enjoyed it. Then I played all the dark souls and realised how the witcher combat doesn't feel like you're hitting anything

It looks great, the story, dialogue and quests are mostly well written and it has the best dlc in recent memory.
The combat being "bad" (something that everyone who claims so seems to have a different reason why) is the main thing detractors think they can fault.

TW1's combat takes a lot of getting used to but if you can force your way through the first couple of chapters until you have a few sword combos and signs at your disposal it does get a lot better.

They did a total re-haul of the combat for the second one, changing from stances and automatic dodge/parry to light/heavy attacks and having to manually dodge and parry attacks.

In TW3, they added a crossbow and made it so that many monsters have to be approached in a specific way.
