I've been thinking about this for a while now and...is Max Payne 1 actually the best written and presented video game of all time?

It rides the line perfectly between drama and camp, the budget limitations which resulted in stuff like the graphic novel cutscenes has only made it more timeless. It's goofy, but it's not schlock. It's the perfect amount of self-awareness for a video game mainly about shooting people in the face, but it's also serious enough to make you feel invested.

I'd say Alpha Centauri has better writing but since this is really a Max Payne thread

I wish 3 was better.
>>
I've only recently played Max Payne for the first time, and I hated it.
The guns do peanut damage and the bullet time mechanics don't even let you dodge since your body hides where the bullets are going if you're planning to shoot back as well. The default bullet time/action shoot wasn't even configured to be different, and often times I action shot when I wanted to go bullet time. It's silly to think I needed to change the default button mapping for that.
But when I finally finished the game, something kicked inside of me. I wasn't glad that I was finished, I was sad. I realised that I just finished a good game. I missed everything instantly, the gunplay, Max's monologues, the enemies; but when I came back to go for a Hard-Boiled run, I thought it was still shit.
What other games give this feeling?
>>
it has really fun gameplay too

shame mp3 ruined the series

I'm fine with both 2 and 3 never existing. Max Payne should've been a one-off game.
>>
>>383583345
One of my favorite games, with Max Payne 2.

The story and atmosphere was great. It was dark. It was cold. Still unprecedented in my opinion.

>The guns do peanut damage
...what?
did you literally play the game only using Berettas, without aiming to the head?

Also, the bullet time ain't for dodging shots, but to kill everything in the house before they have time to realize you're there.

But yeah, MP is one of the swansongs of the era where a small group of FRIENDS could make a game THEY wanted to do, and make it well, thus turning into a success story. Plus, MP1 was like this "Crysis" of the early 00s with its visuals and animations.

>LITERALLY gimping myself to play the game with Berettas only

The problem is Remedy themselves.

They were too ambitious for their own good, all their games take fucking forever to make and they always wants to be bigger and badder.

Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Break; they were always trying to out-do themselves. But in reality they were biting off more than they could chew.

Playing through MP1 after not having touched the game in close to a decade and it's held up surprisingly well.

It's pretty hard compared to the sequel though, to the point where I'm spamming quicksave every minute because I don't want to get buttfucked by a shotgun wielding thug hiding behind a corner.
>>
>>383585546
MP1 isn't that hard, it's more that MP2 is super easy.

Having bullet-time slow down more for every kill was a neat idea but it broke the game.

i cant be the only one who didn't like max payne 2? it took itself way too seriously and the whole sappy love story between mona and max didn't grab me at all. and it looks like they got a completely different model for Max (not sure but it cant be sam lake) and even his voice sounds different, like he's trying too hard to be dark and serious. then in 3 they do a 180 and max looks and sounds like sam again albeit older.

they also made it so when you jump off a building thats high enough to kill you, the camera does this shitty birds eye view from miles up and you can barely see shit. jumping off aesir tower and seeing max bounce was cool as shit
>>
>>383583345
I'm actually playing the trilogy for the first time and I'm loving it. 1 kept fucking me so I found myself savescumming like a bitch every few moments. And fuck those dream sequences where you have to balance yourself on those blood trails.
Haven't gotten far into 2 but I'm liking Max and Mona so far. What I find really interesting is seeing Sam Lake's already working with the idea of the tv giving hints or parallels with the main story, like it happens with Alan Wake plus the manuscript pages.
>>
>>383585882
MP 1 was all about the grizzled NYPD cop with nothing to lose getting framed and going all Hard Boiled to unmask and kill the kingpin of a corporate criminal underworld.

MP 2 was so fucking shit that I don't even remember the plot aside from Vlad being a bad guy and Vinnie being alive.
>>
>>383585882
No, I don't like 2 either. Like you said it took itself more seriously and I also didn't like the changes to the gameplay.

I actually like 3 better than 2 because even though I don't like the writing the production values and tech are insane and it sort of feels like Die Hard.
>>
>>383585224
Remedy forgot to make an actually good game first and foremost, and leave toying with the meta-narrative self-aware moviegame thing to afterwards.

Also, Max Payne 2 was one of the first of those games you can literally complete in an afternoon I remember playing.
I don't really remember if it actually started that irritating sub"genre" of the supershort-yet-fullpriced game, but I'm still not forgiving it for it. It felt like an expansion pack for MP1.

They modeled Max after an actor, the same guy that was in the comic book style cutscenes. I liked MP2 just in terms of how well it played and how the weapons sounded, it was a clear upgrade from the first game. The levels however weren't all that great.

No idea why they couldn't just keep the setting of the first game, then again I'm a sucker for snowy levels in video games.

Nigga a good shotgun blast will take someone out. 2 if youre bad. But guess what, the sawed off shotgun allows you to doubletap people easily. The pump action allows you to shoot twice in a shoot dodge. The desert eagle packs a punch. The dual ingrams allows you to ventilate everyone you like with 100 bullets. Later on you get the jackhammer and colt commando which are pure rape machines. So step the fuck up and stop shooting their legs

I think Remedy is still alright. They're experimenting. When they have bigger budgets they experiment even more.
And it's hard to say for the team-up. Both games, despite their ocassional campiness, are still somewhat serious. I don't know how it could work gameplay wise. In terms of just storytelling, this is my guess. Alan Wake is fictional in Max Payne's world and vice versa.

>>
>>383594286
This is something so many games get wrong. Usually, you'll have the MC saying "have to do x" over and over because the devs thinks the player is a retard and forgot what they were supposed to do, while also adding these sort of details. Max Payne just lets the player hang around and explore, fucking up the AC unit in the break room, getting in front of the tv while the other two cops complain, etc.

>Mona Sax sings the song in a shower in her hideout when Payne finds her. (A Linear Sequence of Scares)
>The Cleaners play the song on a dead man's piano. (The Million Dollar Question)
>Numerous enemies hum the song throughout the game.
>The one cleaner that actually cleans anything in Max Payne's last nightmare sings the song.

And then, in the credits, you can finally hear it fully. Perfect way to end game.

What makes the cutscenes great is largely down to hearing Max's inner monologue, and that doesn't necessarily require a cutscene unlike the banter and dialogue so a lot of that felt gratuitous and interrupted the flow of the game. Currently playing Max Payne 3 after having played the first two games a couple of months ago for the first time.

My feelings for MP3 are conflicted, on one hand the gameplay is amazing and polished so hard you can use it as a mirror, on the other hand I am very disappointed in how different it is from MP1+2.
The Story isn't bad at all but just not what I imagine a Max Payne game to be about, Max's inner dialogue is alright but not enough.

I kind of wish that Max Payne 3 was its own new franchise instead and just a spiritual successor to the other games.

>>
>>383583345
>I've been thinking about this for a while now and...is Max Payne 1 actually the best written and presented video game of all time?
Honestly... probably.

What I like most about it is how it makes a clear distinction from the story presentation (the comic book style and voice acting) and actual gameplay, which is pure game. It also made the story side completely skippable so you can stay right in the gameplay.

I liked MP3 but it completely threw this design philosophy out and made those fucking awful unskippable cutscenes and game transitions that takes the control out of the player's hands. Really unforgivable and unfortunate. I still did like the game a lot though despite that.

Seriously though, as long as the graphics were really good by today's standards the game would still be very praised and loved, I believe. Thing is that I doubt it could happen in today's climate, back then you didn't need a huge team and budget to make a graphically impressive, highly detailed game that can compete with the best on the market. Nowadays it'd either look shit compared to the average AAA release or it'd have a decent budget and would be ruined by publishers.

Max Payne was the first game to use photo textures extensively.

It's easy to forget now, but when it came out it was already infamous in the industry for being vaporware and for offering revolutionary graphics.

>Can't render a lively New York, so the game takes place during a massive blizzard.

This element contributes so much to why I love the game.

It just feels apocalyptic. It's the kind of night where you get the sense anything could happen, that the spirits of the damned have raised from hell for one night of horror.

One of the most awesome moments in any videogame:

>"What do you mean he's unstoppable? You are superior to him in every way that counts. You are better trained, better equipped, you outnumber him at least 20 to 1. Do... your... job!"

Hearing the main villain affirm your badassitude as you mow down wave after wave of junkies, mobsters, lunatics and mercenaries is just so awesome. You knew the end was coming and that you were going to seriously fuck some shit up.

I have a theory about Max Payne that is probably just wank but I really like it. I feel like all the mythical references in 1 are a little more than that. I feel like the story of the game itself is taking a myth about a hero and placing it in a pseudo-modern setting, so when you have Max being literally unstoppable it makes sense because this is not a realistic story in spite of being set in a vaguely realistic world. And then you make the hero self-aware and that's a recipe for one of the most unique video games ever.
>>
>>383615338
The mythical stuff was V(hallucinations) numbnuts.
>>
>>383615338
Don't know if canon wise it's more than a bit weird hard boil noir story. I think its just Remedy wanting to use the New York setting with their own folklore.

I honestly feel bad for people that never played Max Payne 1 and 2. These games were true masterpieces, especially the first one.

That atmosphere...

That New York City during a snow storm...

It was AMAZING.

I wish I could go back in time and play it again.
>>
>>383615740
Aren't the references to norse mythology just in the names? I have no idea if each character actually follows the same character in mythology.
>>
>>383616028
They're more like name and a theme. I mean Lupino = Lupus = wolf = Fenrir = herald of the Ragnarok. Woden is one-eyed and wise. But I'm saying it's more than just references, it's there to set up a certain theme and mood.
>>
>>383616018

>>383586283

>>
>>383616176
>it's there to set up a certain theme and mood.
Oh yeah, definitely. You do get that sense of something much bigger than you, which makes a perfect setup for the conspiracy. The constant snow storm is genius, not only for the technical limitations but for setting up that world changing plot.

You go around either drunk or hungover chasing people you have no attechment to with an annoying asshole that leaves you to die at some point. Story is so forgettable I can't recall anyones name or even why you were chasing the big bad guy on the airfield.

Where is that good writing youre talking about.

MP1 had dealing with death of your family, revenge, norse mythology references, dealing with the mobs

MP2 had starting over and romance arc

What did MP3 have? Something about abducting people being bad and getting over your alcoholism.

Max Payne 3 is a very underrated game, I understand why people dislike it, but I still think it's a worthy installment. It has three big problems, the writing feeling extremely Rockstar at times (fuck characters like Marcello), it has too much cutscenes/loading and the game feels like it retcons a lot of events. It's pretty much half reboot and best approached as such.

I actually like that it deliberately feels very different in style. Very good shooting, amazing technology and production values. Campaign is very diverse, I love how it throws different locations and different looks of Max on you; keeps the game from getting stale. The story is somewhat interesting and I like the whole fish out of water aspect. The thing I probably like most is what a fucking wreck Max is in this game, it doesn't really line up with how 2 ended, but it's something quite novel for a video game protagonists. You don't really see MC's this fucked up very often, so the scene where he shaves his head and decides to get his shit together is super satisfying.

Also, "You'll walk, WITH A LIMP." is probably one of the greatest comeback lines ever.

Max Payne 1 is far better in those things though

Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games (if not outright best) ever made and its probably one of the best stories youll ever see being told in games since it has actual talent behind it instead of just being a "videogame story". However, there is nothing particularly well written or well presented in its actual script or being a well presented package in general. Sure it has amazing components (the artstyle, the graphics, the audio etc etc) but none of these are what "presentation" really means. Max Payne has an incredible presentation that really seals the 10/10 package with things like the great cover art, the comicbook cutscenes, the style of narration etc etc.

I only played Max Payne recently but it instantly became a favorite. That being said, I think Silent Hill 2 still holds itself above. Then again, they are completely different so I personally hold both of them in my best gaming experience list.

Unironically yes.
Fuck Dan Houser for thinking that he and his fan fiction can compete with the genius that is Sami Järvi.

MP3 is proof that no matter the budget, a game is worth shit if it has no soul.

Why is Max running around drunk or hungover a problem when it fits in perfectly with his character?

Max doesn't need an attachment when his job was to protect the people that are now in danger, he's a good guy his job was to protect them, he failed and he's trying to fix his mistake, how dumb are you to get that

>story us so forgettable I can't remember any of the names
I loved MP1 and 2 and don't remember any of the names besides max and Mona, I guess that means they were forgettable too. I also literally have no recollection of max Payne 2 story unless I think really hard about it. Some guy betrays you some big shoot out in a rich guy's mansion, awesome construction scene but no contextual recollection, I guess that means the story was forgettable

>where is the good writing
If you didn't love Max's voice over throughout you clearly don't enjoy good noire

>mp1 is good because the drug in it is named after Greek mythology
Brilliant

Mp3 is about a washed up ruined cop finding redemption and doing good in a godless hell hole, getting an education as to what abject poverty and shit really looks like, and eventually taking on a private paramilitary and corrupt police force all on his own before ultimately finding inner peace and living out the rest of his life in paradise. Pretty nice ending for max.

You're a dumbass tho. Beyond Max's story it's also about poverty and the elite and how the elite use the lower class. That's literally what MP1 was about. Sorry you're too dumb to get it :/

I will admit passos was an annoying chode, but shooting jersey shore rejects in their faces was truly top tier kino

Not to mention that the Sea bases have their own names.

And if your first mind worm unit dies, the capital of a conquered faction get's renamed.

I didn't know this. That's fucking great. This game keeps on giving.

Max Payne (2001)
>I had taken on the role of the mythic detective: Bogart as Marlowe, or as Sam Spade going after the Maltese Falcon. To unravel all the mysteries, following a path of clues to that final revelation, even if it would take me down to the cold, cavernous depths of a grave.

Max Payne 2 (2003)
>There are no choices. Nothing but a straight line. The illusion comes afterwards, when you ask "why me?" and "what if?". When you look back and see the branches, like a pruned bonsai tree, or forked lightning. If you had done something differently, it wouldn't be you, it would be someone else looking back, asking a different set of questions.

Max Payne 3 (2012)
>You buy yourself a product and you get what you pay for, and these chumps had paid for some angry gringo without the sensibilities to know right from wrong. Here I was about to execute this poor bastard like some dime store angel of death and I realized they were correct, I wouldn't know right from wrong if one of them was helping the poor and the other was banging my sister.

hmmmmmm

I think 3 went too far into the hard boil detective trope. 1 and 2 never showed Max as some addicted, alcoholic wreck, other than the arguable painkillers. Just the wrong man at the wrong time.
>>
>>383628636
>I think there's a proper way to play video games
Nufaggotstan
>>
>>383628686
Well Max Payne 3 takes place years after Max's life has been completely ruined, he wouldn't have been an alcoholic whilst living with his wife and baby, 2 was too recent, and either way his painkiller addiction was always a core part of his character anyway, that's why his character model looked constipated
>>
Has anyone read the comic that bridges 2 and 3?

why did this game and vtmb have such a good atmosphere?
i really like the gritty, cold, dark early 2000s aesthetic and i want moar games with it
>>
>>383629026
Painkillers, yes, even though it was never that acknowledged in the plot, only in the gameplay. But the hard drinking is typical fallen from grace cop trope. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate MP3, I actually like it. I would just prefer if they kept themselves a bit closer to original Max. A guy that could find little nuggets of humor even in dire situations.
>>
>>383583345
>no one talking about great GBA port of the original
>>
1's only misstep gameplay-wise was the red line walking parts

finished 2 tonight and it's nowhere near as tight an experience. I think it's safe to assume that rockstar came to remedy offering a big bag with a dollar sign on it and that's the only reason 2 exists. not a bad game by any means but the only thing that really stood out to me over 1 was having people help you like the old lady giving you a shotgun and the mobsters in the gang war level
