Very remotely. There are no pickups and the craft handles way differently. F-Zero gives you more direct control over your craft which makes taking turns generally easier. The tracks are also wider in general. To compensate, they put 29 other craft on the tracks that try to fuck you over, then they make it pretty fucking fast and make it BALLS hard. Like touch the wall once and lose like 10 places.
It's one of the hardest games I ever played, but god does it feel rewarding.
The classic games are a little more comfy. They don't have complicated physics to worry about and generally you just need to drive clean.

Climax is probably the best but I prefer GP Legend over it due to having better music and course design. All 3 of them are worth playing but I'd focus more on one of the console games first.

Speaking of F-zero, what does /v/ think a new one should bring to the table? Personally, I think the core mechanic of the series is boost power so its the obvious area to focus on improving the series. What I would do if I was making a new F-Zero is introduce a boost power drafting mechanic where if you're within a cars length behind a racer who uses boost power you will also get a boost without any cost to your health. This would serve a double purpose: to introduce a comeback mechanic that doesn't betray the skill based nature of the game or affect time trials and to introduce a high skilled cooperative aspect to the game for team races.
