Not really, the point of that module is that they build all the tech and gameplay required for dogfighting first so we get to play something a lot earlier while also being able to give feedback on these mechanics so they can mature before the game releases.

In most ways I agree with you.

I'm mostly a cargo hauler, so all I normally do is look up the nearest outbreak system and ship medications to whatever station needs it. Which system I trade to means fuck all as far as I can tell.

However, due to just how fucking big the "Map" is, travel makes things limited in ways that most games don't really acknowledge.

Someone taking a mission to ship a passanger to Sag A will be paid close to 50,000,000Cr. However, that trip could take at the least three days of doing nothing but jumping systems and fuel scooping. Not to mention you also need to make the trip back.

This also effects smaller things as well.

Take for example engineering a ship. Most engineers are based in systems near the edge of civilized space, so there's a lot of travel involved if you want to fully modify a ship. Completing a ship is quite a feat in just the travel requirements alone.

EVE Online combined with a better EVE Online

Animal Crossing with your own small town while playing solo, 3-4 big MMO theme park cities people can congregate to when they connect online, you get to explore large mostly hand crafted labyrinths, a shit ton of smaller mystery dungeon/warframe styled level tilesets connecting the labyrinths (kind of like destinys patrol zones with those long loading screen matchmaking hallways except more condensed modular and maze like), map drawing like in etrian odyssey and the drop in drop out multiplayer you have in new leaf. Everyone's maps are different when playing solo at first but in the online portion everyone's worlds are mixed together like a heat map generating the same dungeons and labrynths for everyone. Lots of places in these areas can be between calm/domesticated to brutally hostile depending on how active players are in these areas while online/solo and how far the place is from the hub cities/your town.

I like animal crossings design and aesthetic but there is not that much to do in one sitting besides screwing around with QR customizations and decorating. MMOs/open worlds are shit, there's no exploring just roaming wide open spaces with all the little things worth noticing on a mini map that has everything marked already. I don't have any ideas for combat, shit would probably be bad by default due to latency.

Even after the Thargoids come out, the game won't get any less grindy. Every content patch they just add more grind and nerf anything that's profitable. Not like profits matter since money and bigger ships are mostly meaningless. You do the same shit at the end game that you could do at the beginning.
