I for one certainly didn't play on a private Burning Crusade expansion server with my mates. All just messing about having enormous fun running raids like Karazhan every week purely for shits and giggles.

There are also private servers that are "progression" servers. Thry slowly make their way through all released content at a rate decided by their communities.

For most people though they use these fixed servers as little gameplay "snapshots" and are more than happy with them just the way they are.

MMO's should primarily be about the community first and foremost. That was official WoWs biggest problem. They sacrificed community for sales numbers.
