As someone who owned a DK2 and now a CV1, the resolution is still nice for me. The problem is the games. There are none. You've got tech demos and horrible indie money-grabs. The only things worth playing in VR are social apps and cockpit games.

The porn isn't as impressive as you may have been led to believe. Especially the 180 degree stuff shot with 3D cameras. If the model is in the perfect spot moving just right, it can look amazing. But 70% of the time she isn't.

The animated porn is 90% trash. Absolute garbage. I'm probably picky because I'm an animator myself, but the stuff I've seen (which is most of what's popular now) is just not worth it. To put my opinion in perspective though, I also think most SFM stuff is shit. If you enjoy SFM porn, you might enjoy the amateur VR animated porn, but the VR stuff is on an even lower level than the SFM porn. I don't know why all the world's worst animators are drawn to working in VR, but they are.

The most enjoyable adult experience I've had in VR was VRGirlz. It's not animated and it's not something I'd fap to, but it was interesting and impressive for what it is. It's full, HD scans of women's bodies which you can look around and enlarge. You can see what it's like to have a nipple the size of your desk in front of you.

Don't get VR just for porn. Unless you're rich, you WILL regret it.

i want to be excited about vr but the vast majority of software is just overpriced shovelware.

the problem is exacerbated by oculus and valve being so spooked about making anyone ill that they've created these 'best practices' guides that severely limit game design.

talk to someone from those two companies about left stick movement and they'll balk at you despite the fact that RE7 is the only real VR success story and mostly ignores that rule.

VR will be successful one day, but only after AR devices have advanced to a point where they can be used as VR devices. VR is only good enough to be a feature - not a standalone experience.

The motion sickness scare is slowly getting undone. Developers are adding in options. Look at Doom VFR, The Mage's Tale, Gunheart, etc, all of those developers are responding to demands and are saying they'll have multiple options for movement.

VR is going to be successful sooner than AR because VR is already getting invested on from consumers so the tech is developing at a faster rate. VR devices will be able to do AR once they put in a transparent screen instead of the opaque one now.

i think it only looks better because expectations around vr content have normalised to an extent.
there was an absolutely insane amount of hype around launch time that was really not justified.
after watching dozens of mediocre shooting galleries and teleporathons show up people have simply lowered the bar to a reasonable level.
the challenge now is for something to come along and raise that bar again, but i haven't seen anything that looks like it will.
people over at /r/oculus and /r/vive will lose their shit and proclaim games like robo recall and echo arena as revolutions and everyone else will look at them and just shrug.

of the upcoming games i think fallout 4, despite being a mediocre game (imo), and skyrim are what's needed - big, sprawling things you can spend hours in. they are, by no means, what will propel VR into millions of households tho.

i completely disagree on this point. the race towards consumer-AR is well underway and a single major announcement from someone like apple would completely wipe away any lead VR may have when it comes to adoption - and that announcement is coming w/in the next 2 years.

As for AR, I'd disagree with your disagreement, because AR hardware simply isn't advanced and can't be. If you look at Hololens where it's $3000, the display system still kind of sucks and the processing power is absolute shit. 2 years down the line isn't enough time to polish that stuff up into a good consumer product people will want to wear on their heads for long periods of time, doesn't matter if it's Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or whoever. The evidence we have of how limited mobile processors, battery life and weight, displays, and other things have to be just does not support the idea that a good enough AR device for mainstream consumers will come out soon.

I'd say your concerns re:ar displays are well warranted. 2k/80 fov/at least 3 focal planes are the minimum for a successful product imo. pushing fovs in small form factors is the biggest challenge but i remain optimistic that those targets can be hit.

re: processing i think the current trajectory of mobile SoCs is enough to get us to where we need to be in 2 years. the vast majority of AR content imo won't need desktop gpu levels of processing - floating 2d screens, data visualisations, static 3d models with little to no dynamic lighting is enough.

primarily, AR is a replacement (eventually, initially a compliment) for the smartphone and tablet, not a high-end gaming device.

To people that have the rift and have actually played games on it, what are some actual games that I can actually play on it? Robo recall looks great but I haven't seen many other games that look to be of that level of quality.

I want to get into real VR (Not phone VR with no tracking or proper GPU), but the raw resolution's still way too low for me to want to get into it. Dropping down to the VR equivalent of sub 1080P from a 1440p ultrawide's no good, regardless of anything else.

At this point, you're still best waiting for the second generation hardware. SteamVR 2.0 will probably be dated and priced at Steam Dev Days (presumably October), Oculus 'standalone' fully revealed before the end of the year. Second gen is going to be natively wireless and 4k per eye.

i just got my oculus rift

now that im not wearing it i very frequently phase in and out of this dizziness
and a very frequent feeling that my hands are not my hands
the dizziness is a feeling of swaying back and forth and monitor for my computer feels like its further away than it actually is

other than this thing thats probably not good for me its super fun ill probably regret buying it after a month maybe when its started collecting dust but right now i think its amazing and i havent even tried the porn yet

It's reasonable to complain at $800+ for everything necessary for a complete experience, but comparing VR to cheapo android phones is the reason why vr'll never be worth it to some people if they ever expect something that won't make 'em throw up at that price.
