i donno. early 200x's had early counter-strike which i feel was the golden age of custom maps, and ultimately when i enjoyed video games the most. almost every game ran purely off of player owned/hosted dedicated servers.

there was definitely a dry spell in the mid 200x's where everyone i knew was playing mmo's but it picked back up again in the late 200x's.

then crates and esports happened and now everything is a lobby and it's 100% not fun

wrong, games were just better back in the days. Now all you have are games which are basically movies with no gameplay at all and most of the games just aren't fun at all. You have early access bullshit, indie game bullshit or triple a titles which dont work (mass effect andromeda for example) There are just a few games which hold my interest long enough to say "yeah this is a good game"

Most here are nostalgic for the 90s-early 2000s so they will say that was the golden age. Those who play games now for the first time will say that the 2010s were the golden age.

Not every game was similar and each game had its own charm and uniqueness to them. There were no standards of comfy so devs were free to design a game any how they wanted and bring and incorporate new ideas to the table.

2017, the current year, may match or surpass it. it is arguably already on track to, even without several presumptive major titles even revealed yet.

There was a dark age from ~2008-2013/2014, defined by incredibly mediocre 'safe bet' AAA shitshow games, the loss of a lot of genre diversity in the industry as AAA shitshow publishers declared most everything but Action/Adventure TPS and Military FPS 'impossible'. We also all watched with horror the slow rise of the next great vidya censorship threat from cultural marxists.

It started getting smashed by high-production 'indie' games turning back to the foresaken genres and proving the AAA shitshow publishers to be just retarded (and then the AAA shitshow publishers slowly started restoring their own genre diversity, which is an ongoing process). And the SJWs killed themselves by being captured by purely self-interested con artists just looking for the next pump-n-dump, who reached too far too quickly and forced their own early resistance movement into being.

Things are looking up. The battle lines are being drawn for a REAL 'war' like there hasn't been since Nintendo/Sega, between the advocates of open vs walled-garden platforms (Valve and Microsoft over PC, Google and Apple over mobile/web/xr, Valve and Facebook over VR, etc.), which will create a lot of value and progress and decades worth of new memes.
