I didn't mean to imply that Cataclysm nerfed heroics in general, but that the devs later patched Cata heroics specifically. It was a step down in what was a solid expansion at launch.

They weren't the epitome of top tier difficulty but they actually did feel dangerous sometimes. The first boss in Stonecore (Orboros or something) had a move that would one shot you. After it got patched? Anybody but a cloth wearer could just stand there and eat it without dying.

I was really hoping that the Warcraft Chronicles books would help the writers get their heads on straight about the story, but it's really proving to be unfixable.

I think the biggest issue is, game-wise, is just all the timelines they have going on now... Both in terms of when you go to Outland and Northrend, you're going back in time, but now the whole Draenor alt-timeline thing, which has brought alternative versions from Draenor to Azeroth.

Shit's just fucked and kind of cheesy at this point.

This is why stories in MMOs should always be done in a way similar to vanilla > Wrath, where every continent/expansion has its own self-contained story.

The Chronicles are awesome because they're very grounded, consistent, and probably written by a small amount of people working with a visible artistic direction in mind. It's a for-the-fans treat for people who enjoy lore the most. But WoW lore is shit because of the MMO format demanding a soap opera-like story that never ends, in addition to shouldering the responsibility of pleasing all fans in order to drum up sales.

The Chronicles are passion projects. WoW lore is a business decision. The former has creative integrity, the latter does not. They are two products which actively work against each other, if you ask me. The worst part is that it's an entirely unnecessary conflict. If Blizzard were simply better writers and took the time to write a few more fucking paragraphs of text and dialogue, they could fix so much in the way their shitty story is presented.

Compared to Blizzard, the old Bioware (not the manchildren who made ME: Andromeda) had some serious worldbuilding chops which shows in Dragon Age Origins. The Witcher series is pretty legit as well; the original author had a good knowledge of European history and politics and it reflects in the series' worldbuilding. Both series are hyper detail-oriented; something Blizzard is not.

Related to WoW, Rise of the Horde and The Last Guardian are decent books because the authors had a lot of freedom to just be creative and come up with ton of fantasy shit. Other than that, WoW books mostly suck because they're essentially preludes to advertise an upcoming expansion, or they exist to fill in old plot holes, or they're written by Knaak the Hack.

And then there are countless fantasy novels written by actual authors who realize that character is what matters in a story and not fancy world building with "magic systems." Then again, if you're looking for truly great stories, you shouldn't be reading genre fiction to begin with.

It's more of my issue with modern fantasy. Lots of derivative crap out there where authors believe their special fantasy universe needs a cool magic system that's totally unique in its own way but still exactly like all the others because they stupidly believe worldbuilding and concepts make a series great and character is secondary. When in fact it's the other way around.

Magic and fantasy need to be extensions of characterization, meant to help illustrate a speculative scenario that helps us better comprehend the actual non-fantasy world we live in. Same goes for sci-fi. The great Hugo Award-winning authors like Vance, Le Guin, PKD, or others like Lem all understood this. They were legitimate authors, not just goons on a macbook propagating genre fiction.

After reading Chronicle Vol. 2, I'd fucking kill someone to get a full-fledged RPG that took place during the old warcraft era. It's got all the best parts of a classic medieval fantasy while escaping a lot of genre cliches thanks to the dual perspective of Horde vs. Alliance. The internal politics of both factions made the plotting feel so damn solid, and it felt like Blizzard was doing some actual worldbuilding for once. The escalation, the scale... all of it was just plain fun to experience again. Makes me even angrier the Warcraft movie flopped.

I love the diverse aesthetic of modern WoW; I love the WH40k shit, I love the size and scope and interconnections of it all. But I fucking hate the plot right now. Warcraft lore is at its best when things are kept on the small scale while still utilizing the intensity of its universe.

If Warcraft 4 were ever made, I wouldn't want a new plotline. I'd just want to replay campaigns and battles from every point in Warcraft history between a bunch of different factions.

They made the lore too nice and tidy with Chronicle. Everything gets a common origin and there is nothing truly mysterious or unknown left.

And now with the entire Pantheon in a patch they've made the universe as small as possible.

They're wrapping it all up in a hurry. No way did I think they'd end the entire burning legion faction in one expansion.

All they really need to address is the void lords now and thats it. Can be done in one more expansion and they've effectively dispensed with the Warcraft franchise.

I feel no compulsion to resub even with all this heavy shit going down. I watch some of the datamining but its all at arms length.

It would break the mold. So far we've never had two expansions in a row with a new class. We're more likely due for a new playable race.

That said I would love a MoP-like expansion in just about every way. I enjoyed almost every class to some degree, Timeless Isle was better than any other catch-up zone that came before or after it, monk was fun, and all the lore was actually fucking new. It came with a new race and a new class. Even I, someone who still hates pandas and found the chinkaboo aesthetic irritating, loved what MoP brought to the table.

Why the fuck does everything look like shit in game when the art direction was so good.


We have very distinct armor and weapon aethetics for every race, yet the amount of true racially themed arnor sets are almost completely absent.
Tauren with totems and feathered headdresses.
Blood Elves adorned in elaborate red and gold.
Gnomes with tons of tinkery spinny gadget shit.
Night Elves with bark armor and natural elements.

There is just not enough armor in the game that caters to these types of styles they designed these races around. Aside from Orcs and Trolls, there is very very little.

Because WoW doesn't have a dedicated art department or designer, all the art for all the Blizzard games is done by the same people so it all comes out looking the same, without ever looking particularly focused. That's actually one of the biggest failures of post-BC WoW, everything is the same for both Alliance and Horde, and the individual races are have no narrative outside their membership in the Horde/Alliance.

Leveling 1-30 in vanilla as Alliance was like playing a totally different game than leveling 1-30 as Horde. Even playing a different race gave you a different experience. Whereas leveling 100-110 is the same regardless of race or faction.

Gathering armor of a certain variety can be a bit of a challenge since quest rewards and loot is something that can usually be acquired by any race and class.
Not to mention that armor is gathered piece by piece rather than being a complete suit.

I agree that the result is often pretty fucking jarring. But with the way it's currently done, I don't blame Blizzard for making most armors pretty neutral-looking.

I've actually thought about how at this point, one direction they could take is that in lore your character decides to say Fuck it to the main Alliance and Horde since whilst you're busy saving the world again alongside different races, these two factions are still going at each others throat whilst there's a bigger threat in front of them.
You withdraw your alligience to any main faction and declare yourself free to help anyone you want. And both factions by this point would be too beat up from the Legion to refuse any help.
This I think solves a few issues people have been arguing about.
First it keeps the precious Horde vs Alliance thing going on.
It pretty much opens up the 'other half' of the game for you no matter who you play as.
By self stripping your previous appointed titles and expectations you're an adventurer again, done in a believable way.

Each expansion is like a block stacked on top of the base game with its own designated levels. Starting from vanilla there are seven blocks in total;

1.Vanilla 1-60
2.TBC 60-70
3.WotLK 70-80
4.Cata 1-60 & 80-85
5.MoP 85-90
6.WoD 90-100
7.Legion 100-110

Cata fucked up the flow of leveling as it now looks like;

4. Cata 1-60
2.TBC 60-70 Pretty useless in Cata
3.WotLK 70-80 Pretty useless in Cata
4.Cata 80-85
5.MoP 85-90
6.WoD 90-100
7.Legion 100-110

Now I am on board for another shot at making the leveling process fun again, but it would have to work along the lines of;

8. Untitled Expac 1-100 (Revamp EK and Kalimdor adding quests for levels 61-100)
7. Legion 100-110
8. Untitled Expac 110-120 (South Seas/Kul Tiras if its true)

Leveling in Outland, Northrend, Panaland, and AU Draenor would need to be an option but should be suggested as the primary way to go through these levels. As is, most people just duty finder their way to 100 anyways

What would be really neat would be this:

Unhook the leveling system from the legacy quests and create a leveling path for each rach to pursue, if they wanted.

For example, as a Blood Elf, after tying your shit in Quel'Thalas and Ghostlands, you could delve into other Blood elf related questlines, i.e. the Elves in Blasted Lands, the quests in Falcon's Watch in HFP, the Reliquary. Then reward a race themed transmog for completing all your races' questline groupsnor something.

With the scaling tech they could just scale you to whereever against anything and reward appropriate gear.

Flying is there now, of course not in the new content. Flying means you can go at 310% speed from quest to quest. No flying means you have to zigzag around all the cliffs Blizzard specifically put there to slow you down at 100% speed.

The problem is silhouettes. Blizz always gave that excuse for not giving alliance High Elves. Blood Elves are a Horde "silhouette." If they did give Alliance High Elves Horde would get an Alliance silhouette. My bet would be Forsaken looking like Nathanos. Just explain these Forsaken as incredibly well preserved or freshly died human corpses.
