The change in music is regrettable, but not as bad as people make it out to be. DQVIII is my favorite game of all time and I still enjoyed the 3DS version just as much as the PS2.

Grind. I used all-female party on my last playthrough, but Ragnar is pretty much the same as Alena, Brey can replace Maya, and Cristo is the best healer. I ended up rolling at the monster arena to get the best gear, but ultimately having a good mix party and a shitload of grinding will get you through.

But your example is a massive extreme that is not in any way comparable to putting orchestrated music in Dragon Quest. Which by the way, Sugiyama pioneered orchestrated versions of video game soundtracks back in the 1980s.

Someone who would be a better example of your statement would be Uematsu. His MIDI/Synth works are much better than his orchestrated reworks since they were originally written for the NES/SNES/PS1 hardware and only get orchestrated remixes. And his later works that started off as orchestrated songs aren't that great either.

Sugiyama is the exact opposite. His orchestrated works are better than the Synth versions, since they are originally written for orchestra and adapted into synth for the hardware limitations (and later nostalgia).

The 3DS game has a bunch of new features the original doesn't. It's like choosing the PS2 version of Dragon Quest V instead of the DS remake. Sure you get orchestrated music and 3D graphics, but miss out on Deborah, new dungeons, new monsters and faster combat.

This. The 3DS game is synth renditions of the orchestrated music. Not the original music Japan got on the PS2. They actually went to even more effort to re-record the music just for the western release on 3DS for some strange reason.

The localization team gave a bogus excuse about how they wanted all the music to be uniform. Since a few songs in the Japanese release were synth and not orchestrated, they decided to make all the songs in the western release synth. This is of course dumb, but then SquareEnix can hardly release a game without ruining it somehow.
