Why do linear shooters rarely have campaigns that last longer than 15 hours? It seems weird that plenty of RPGs have enough content to last 40+ hours in a single playthrough, yet linear shooters rarely last that long. I just beat Doom 2016 and it feels way too short.
>>
if you cut out all the traveling, reading, thinking about builds, and made the combat take seconds I wonder how many hours you could squeeze out of the average RPG gameplay, probably not that many
>>
RPGs have more allowance for downtime and variety. It's easier to have you doing a variety of things when all of your inputs are just through menus anyway. For example I've just finished Persona 5 and I don't mind spending hours just hanging out with people and raising my social stats. If it was nothing but dungeons it would get old fast. Usually in FPS games there isn't that much to do outside of combat, so the package is more concise. It's also a lot harder to pace as a result. Both are good approaches in their own ways
>>
Linear shooter:
>Is literally all about the action and downtime is usually considered a bad thing
>Level design is extremely important, arguably the single most important part of the game when in a lot of RPGs combat moves to an arena or actual level structure isn't all that important
>Little RPG mechanics to keep you occupied for hours contemplating your build
>tying the mechanics into the quieter story portions is harder because the story isn't really the point most of the time

Also I think a shooter can actually go on too long, sometimes a game just overstays its welcome. It's called bad pacing.

What kind of retarded question is this?

Its like asking why is a roller coast ride shorter than visiting the zoo.
>>
>>383451818
Because linear shooters have a very basic and barebones gameplay that would grow stale past the 8 hours mark.

Look at nudoom, or hell even the old doom games. They're extremely long for linear shooters and they basically become a chore 1 level after you get all the weapons
>>
I'm not buying your game
>>
>>383453431
>game becomes a chore once you unlock all the weapons

you have no concept of fun anon
>>
>>383451818
I wouldn't mind fucking her shit up, senpai.
>>
>>383451818
>It seems weird that plenty of RPGs have enough content to last 40+ hours in a single playthrough
Because they pad the fuck out of their length with repetitive content, and most abilities/enemies are the same thing with higher numbers. Shooters (and pretty well any decent real time combat game) strive for functional variety in abilities, enemies that make you adapt to their specific behavior and don't throw the same encounter at you a hundred times in a row.
>>
>>383453431
>Because linear shooters have a very basic and barebones gameplay
>old Doom was bad
Let me guess, you're an RPGfag.
>>
>>383451818
>40+ hours in a single playthrough,
40+ hours of garbage gameplay, cutscenes, NPC "interactions" (ie more cutscenes) and if open wold walking from one of the map to the other.

RPGs are the worst video game genre behind even the shittiest of linear, setpiece riddled FPS.

it's okay, you don't have to play them. That's the best part about having lots of genres! there's surely something you like.

I mean, you do play video games right? you don't just complain about them on /v/ I hope.
>>
>>383455173
>it's ok a genre is shit
>>
>>383454934
I agree that a lot of RPGs have lost focus on what's supposed to be fun, but I think a lot of RPGs fun is derived from the theorycrafting elements. The developers present a mathematical problem for you to solve with some fun and flashy theming. I think of RPGs like word problems in math tests. It's just a way of dressing up math and puzzles for you to solve.

But yeah, games like FF14 where there is nothing to solve for, and you're just mind numbingly going from point A to point B and going through the motions, that's no fun. I shouldn't need to spend hundreds of hours grinding in a game to "get to the good part".
>>
>>383455224
If you don't like it, that's okay my man. Lots of other games to play. If you think it's shit, just head on down to your local game stop and grab something you like!

I don't but that won't stop me from point out how terrible the genre is, especially when someone makes a thread pitting this garbage genre against another.
>>
>>383455515
People are joking when they said this was the GOAT right?
>>
>>383455973
Though the combat isn't all that great, the game was pretty solid all around. I don't know how he's stunlocking the enemy, but the sword looks too weak or the enemy too strong for his level.
>>
>>383455284
>I think a lot of RPGs fun is derived from the theorycrafting elements.
Problem is they've been going backwards on those elements forever, anytime someone tries to shake it up for the better it gets screamed at by casuals, devs are too afraid to give them real difficulty and the core gameplay gets ignored in favor of a shitty story, stupid minigames and open world-esque wastes of time.

>>383455303
>If you don't like it, that's okay my man.
I don't particularly like racing gaems either, but that genre doesn't have shit gameplay.

>mfw grabbed infinite warfare cheap because why not
>lengthy campaign that didn't overstay it's welcome with varied activities and not just run&gun
>top tier writing with genuine feels hardly relying on tropes and a "twist" you didn't see coming

campaign was easily worth 15-20 bucks alone, shame IW was hated by normies so we'll never get more games in that universe.
>>
>>383451818
>tfw BF/CoD will never go open world
>imagine FO except with soldiers in a war torn country, fictional or otherwise (Middle east, russia, WW 1/2 era europe, etc)
>option to choose your faction, be they the US army coming in to provide support to the local army, the local army itself, guerrila/revolutionist, freelance mercenary, etc., with different pros/cons, and a moral system.
>destructible cities/town through out the map, with NPCs rebuilding the city once the battle quiets down.
>campaign; opt to go through your typical linear shooter w/fast travel or take the time to enjoy the view & hit on side missions, etc.
>Online: opt for your typical fixed map deathmatch/ capture the flag/ etc. or be able to opt to run across other players while in campaign for PvP or team up for a common cause.

it saddens me instead we get the same old $60 rehash every year.
>>
>>383458738
what was your opinion on mercenaries
>>
>>383453431
But people play multiplayer shooters for hundreds if not thousands of hours. Unless you're going to say that's only for the social aspect and the gameplay isn't the reason... In that case, why wouldn't they just skype play chess?
>>
>>383458997
I just started college when i played it. I recall enjoying the fuck out of it, but remember it lacked something. maybe i was tired of games at the time, since not long after I kinda left the scene.

wasn't there a 2nd game? i should replay the first and get to the sequel.

This is why shooters need to bring back episodes. There's actual incentive to explore if you lose your weapons.

Who is this lovely young woman.
She looks like someone who would sell quality video games that should be bought at full price.

Todd, give us Skyrim but with guns and make the shooting mechanics like Doom. I'd pay $60 for that and buy the season pass.

Less is more. Nobody wants to play a 40+ hour shitfests like Shithesda's Cuckout 3
>>
>>383453628

I do, but by that point the game has already shown you all that it has to offer and it becomes derivative.

>>383459380
but it is because of the social aspect. human players bring variety that AI will never be able to. Not to mention the competitive part. a competitive instinct drives most of those players forward.

Also, most FPS games with online functions have added unlocks which believe it or not are a motivation for people to keep playing

ubisoft already made far cry 3.

Witcher 3 is meant to be played on the hardest setting.

The current generation can barely muster a fifteen minute attention span.

Frankly it's your fault for putting up with the current standards of education and the way you chose to vote.

You brought this on yourself.

Oh, look. A monkey, who never played Terminator: Rampage.

His first Bathesda game was probably Oblivion.

Either you are underage, too old to be here, or a self hating "born in le wrong generation" fag. Neither option looks good for you.
