I don't understand why this game gets so much hate. It's actually a really great sidescroller with incredible graphics and music. Sure, it isn't the same as Yoshi's Island, but that game was filled with shitty, unfun ideas (ike Baby Mario), whereas this game is platforming bliss. Anyone who says the game is too short either hasn't unlocked the secrets stages or doesn't realize that the real fun of the game is in beating your high score. What gives?

This game actually has some of the worst platform detection of any 2D platformer I've ever touched.

I don't have any major issues with the game otherwise. I almost like it. But holy shit do you ever just pass through stuff when you're jumping, especially in the lava stages.

It's a decent standalone game, bad successor to Yoshi's island.

>not enough that is was ever an annoyance or an issue
Except it was an annoyance anytime that it DID happen. Moreover, if it happened as rarely as you claim, then it wasn't a feature that should have even been included in the game. Both games are great, but Yoshi's Island isn't close to being as good as people pretend it is.

My problem is that the game at least should reward you for getting high scores and all 30 melons & hearts, Star Fox 64 gave you expert mode, new machines and another intro screen, Story should have something besides just "high scores", and some melons like the stackup one or the ones that fall down slowly can be missed easily, thus losing one is resetting and trying again, and sniffing can get annoying.
Besides that, I like it more than Wooly World, Yoshi has good controls & movement, the levels are fun to play and getting melons & combos is actually a tough challenge.

I enjoyed it. It's one of my favorite platformers, if only for the graphics online. Nothing on PS1 or Saturn can approach the beaut of Yoshi's Story.

Will do, I'll also check out Alundra's ost as well. The guy that made the song I linked is Tim Follin, you should definitely look into him since he did a lot of great music.

>Phantasy Star Online
Really good taste, have you heard some of PSO2's music as well? They've got some really good songs in the game. Speaking of Sonic and the DC era, some of Sonic Shuffle's music is pretty calming. There's also the Saturn Sonic 3D.

I think the problem was that many people considered it a direct sequel to Yoshi's Island and expected something different. Personally, I played and loved both games, but Yoshi's Story just felt like less of a chore to play. I think it appeals to the kind of person who likes to chase high scores and explore/experiment, whereas Yoshi's Island was more of a traditional platforming experience akin to Super Mario World.

If you have a PS1, you should check out the game itself too. If you enjoyed games like "A Link to the Past" or Landstalker (made by the same guys) it will be right up your alley. Great 2D adventure game.

As for PSO2, I haven't heard any music from that as I never got around to playing it actually, I'll listen to some right now.

Oh really? That sounds pretty fun, I'll check it out this weekend when I can.
PSO2 has a wide range in terms of styles of music. Here are two of my favorites:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCf2CMSfZSA
https://youtu.be/aY-MQNKbbRY?t=140 (Mostly this segment, but the entire song's pretty good.)
VG music in the early 2000s really hit the sweet spot. I'm not sure how they did it, but it's pretty difficult to emulate today. Not to say that a lot of tracks today aren't chill, though.
Also, this song is pretty good. I never had the chance to listen to RE music much, so this is a welcome song.

>>
It's amazing, but it's a game based around secrets, 100% completition, and replayability.
If you play the game like a pleb just eating random shit and being done after you fight the boss, you'd think it's garbage.

The only reason YI's design looks better is because the entire aesthetic of YI was better. I can't tell any difference from Yoshi's modern look in that image to the YI design other than the obvious fact that the modern one is in 3D.

I might have to check out PSO2 after listening to this stuff. Better than I expected honestly. Sounds a lot like a natural evolution of the original PSO music. That first video reminds me a lot of the PSO Forest music, I think I hear a few samples from it too. I think the 2000s music was great because it was the halfway point between experimental and high-quality, where musicians were still willing to take risks and do weird shit that they aren't as likely to do today. Like you said, there's still good stuff made today, but man, 15~20 years ago VG music hit its peak.

>Also, this song is pretty good. I never had the chance to listen to RE music much, so this is a welcome song.

Nigger, are you blind? Yoshi's Modern design is radically different to the YI design.

Also, I included some sprites of Yoshi from Tetris Attack, as well as Yoshi's Melee design since he looked far closer to his YI design in Melee.

PSO music has always been great in my opinion: the shift from calm to battle is great, and they really nail a lot of boss themes. As a matter of fact, they actually remixed some good boss themes from the original PSO for PSO2.

I don't mind the bulge saddle too much, but what I really dislike about modern Yoshi aside from the big stupid hands is the way they've edged his design to be much more similar to a Koopa. Yoshi in YI, was a little hunched over, and had a fairly long tail, body, and neck. (You can see this really heavily emphasized by the way his spines go all the way down his head and to his saddle, rather than just being on the back of his head). His nose is also way fucking bigger for some reason. As a result of these changes, whenever they try to force modern Yoshi's design into a ridable pose, it looks really bad.
>>
>>383443423
I think it has to do with the 3d yoshi's eyes and his nose is too spherical and doesn't look attached. I usually prefer 2d art anyway because it's more expressive.
>>
>>383443641
>Mother Nature of Dishonesty? On the subject, there's actually a forest stage that's kind of set like that:
Yep, it's probably my favorite tune in the original PSO. Probably partially due to nostalgia, but I always found it to be very relaxing, and like you said the way they had it shift seamlessly from the calm music to the battle music was incredibly well done. Probably some of the best sound design in any game of the era.

That's some nice shit you posted. I especially like Little Love. Really nice tune. Trying to think of what it reminds me of, can't quite put my finger on it. As strange as it sounds, it almost reminds me of a combnation of tunes from Tales of Symphonia and Super Mario 64, lol. How is this game anyways? Is it a turn-based JRPG or the like?

Glad you're enjoying the Ragnarok Online OST. Easily one of my favorite OSTs ever. Not sure if you've ever played Diablo but this is one of the best songs ever made IMO:

Yoshi's Story was probably my most rented game as a child. It was a pretty enjoyable and replayable game, but it's a very clear children's game. Not meant to be difficult or challenging, just a simple romp of collecting fruits while listening to happy music and taking in some great visuals.

Can't blame you, it's a very serene track that somehow manages to really fit with the aesthetic of the game. A lot of the calm tracks in PSO are really pleasing to listen to, honestly.

Rhapsody is a bit of an odd game--The PSX version was a turn based SRPG. However, there's a DS port, which is instead a basic turn based RPG. There's nothing really stellar about the DS version's battle system--which is unfortunately the only one I've been able to play--but it's an average game nontheless. It seems to be more about the music than anything, as the score is actually quite great all around.

This is also a very nice song. Calm songs like this always get to me, really--much like this.

Agreed. PSO in general was a fantastic game. I still play it to this day, on the SCHT servers via the GameCube version. I've been meaning to try out PSO2 and Blue Burst, I really must get around to it. Such beautiful, serene games with great gameplay and community.

Rhapsody sounds pretty by-the-numbers but maybe II'll give it a try one of these days. I have a PS1 and just picked up a 3DS so I might as well, if only for the OST alone.

How is Xenoblade Chronicles by the way? I see a lot of threads about it, but I'm ashamed to admit that, frankly, I don't have a single clue what the gameplay is like. From what I can tell it's a real-time 3rd person RPG but I know nothing else. If I enjoy Zelda, Demon's Souls, Monster Hunter etc, would I enjoy this game? Great tune by the way. Very relaxed. Bullshit. You didn't beat it in one sitting unless you played it for 10 hours straight and automatically knew how to unlock every single level. You beat one single playthrough, which consist of 6 individual levels. There are 24 levels in all, and the fun of the game comes from unlocking them and beating your high score on each one.
>>
>>383446853
>Rhapsody sounds pretty by-the-numbers
The DS port is just okay at best, but maybe the PSX version is better--I'd say to give that a try if you prefer SRPGs.
For Xenoblade Chronicles, I thought I'd hate it at first--I thought I'd hate both the battle system and the fact that the characters always talk. However, the battle system is actually quite interesting; many of your attacks make you think about your position in relation to the enemy, there's a character I usually use called Dunban whose attacks chain into each other for some unique combos, and the characters talking to each other brings about some camaraderie that's rarely seen in games today. It's most like Monster Hunter, so I think you'd enjoy it.
Very nice and calming song on your part--how is Timesplitters?

That's a load of shit. Donkey Kong Country 2 is also built around secrets and 100% completion The difference is it's a good platformer first. Someone can completely ignore all the collectables and bonus rooms in DKC2 and still have a blast. They can just have more fun and unlock more content by combing through all the levels looking for all their secrets.
The fact that you have to bitch out people for playing the game "wrong" (IE, an obvious, completely viable playstyle) shows how fundamentally flawed the game's structure is.
It's not like going for all melons actually makes the game better. It just means you spend more time meandering in the game's dull, unchallenging sniffing their nooks and crannys. If anybody wants to go for high scores they should probably play an actual arcade game and not a poorly-made collectathon.
