Yeah. The Japanese Doom mapping scene is pretty awesome. But overall, one of the big differences is that IBM PC gaming has never really been a thing in Japan. So there's a huge chunk of western gaming history that never really caught on there in the same way that people here played Japanese console games.

There's only a handful of western shit they generally like. And even then. It's usually more modern stuff then old western games.

They're not, but like with anything they have awful taste. They like Skyrim a lot for example.

Well yeah, probably. I just checked 2ch "pc games" board and Fallout 4 is the first topic I saw. The next topic is Hearthstone and the one after that is LoL.
On 2chan I see a short thread about the Crash Bandicoot remake and a Cities Skylinies thread. E3, Payday2 as well.

You also have mangaka like Hori (Boku no Hero Academia) who is big into capeshit comics.

Overwatch is popular in japan.

I wonder how many Japanese vidya outcasts visit 4chan just because they can't talk about their favorite games on 2chan.

I guess there are several reasons.

1. Influential gaming magazines like Famitsu have never been keen to introduce western games to the wider public.

2. Until around the early 90s, most competant devs moved to consoles. Domestic PC gaming has since been dominated by shoddily-made dating sims and visual novels, hence less interest in playing video games on PC.

In any case, after big publishers in America and EU started to focus more on consoles, western games had become much more visible.
