I mean jesus, why the praise? Even after all that shit talking I just did I'd give it one of those 6/10 but play it anyway scores because some of the mechanics are really fun.

If I have an actual criticism, it's that Toby broke the 4th wall way too many times, so you can't trust what the game can and can't do. I tried to do the pacifist route, failed because I didn't try a bunch of shit that I wasn't sure I could do. Hit the spare button! Again! Maybe something different will happen this time! It's a video game and not real life, which means all actions aren't programmed into it. The point of rules for a game is so that you don't attempt a bunch of shit that won't work so you don't waste your time. Breaking that idea SLIGHTLY can be really cool, but if your game is based on it, players won't know when the game is being clever and when it actually doesn't have what you're trying to do programmed into it. Maybe if I pressed up 10 times while hovering over Mercy, a new option will pop up? Why shouldn't insulting one of the enemies work? What if I insulted them 18 times, will they get supercharged from the anger and turn into a flying mount I can defeat and then use to ride into some new secret area? I think Toby went way too far on this, far enough that I couldn't trust the game after awhile.

Favorite part was when the king wrecked the Mercy option though. bretty cool. Other than that Undertale serves only to fuck up your innocent nostalgia with wimpy bullshit.

People like to say that Undertale is a horrific failure compared to Earthbound, and while I agree, Earthbound isn't that good of a game to begin with. It was literally the Undertale of its time.

Let's not romanticize the past anymore than necessary. Earthbound was essentially the most pretentious piece of hot garbage to come out of the 90's. it had redeeming features, sure, but as a whole it deserved that ad campaign that said "this game stinks." Undertale's a sentimental game but that's about it. Outside of Alphys (the worst character in the game) calling Undertale "Tumblr" doesn't make sense as a criticism. Nor does complaining about Papyrus being gay for a character without a canon gender, when by definition that would imply that ANY romantic plotline with another character would be gay depeding on who was playing the game. Nor does the critique that the game fails at evoking 60's and 70's nostalgia like Earthbound when the game never positioned itself as doing so.

It's about as sentimental as Mother 3, just without that same overbearing dread that Mother 3 also leveraged well. It's a suprisingly well designed game, but it relies entirely on player investment to work, so if you see the fanbase and decide "this game is TOO TUMBLR for me" a lot of that depth will go right over your head".

It's still a very short game, certainly not the greatest game ever made but it succeeds in utilizing every tool in the book to basically wring every bit of extra entertainment out of the game.

I do agree the Toriel and Undyne sparing methods are fucking bullshit to the highest order.

I liked undertale.
But it's a game that relies on the player to enjoy it, and if it can't achieve that, or the player actively avoids to partake in the world, it becomes fairly unenjoyable because of the simplistic gameplay.
I'm always down to get suspend my disbelief and get into a world, so I think that's why I enjoyed it. Undertale's gameplay fucking sucked. Whoever made it just tried taking mechanics from other games, watering them down, and then mashing them together.
The attacking mechanics are like the mario rpg's system of timed hits, except it's just a bar moving back and forth. Not that it matters, since the game calls you a bad person for playing the game like a rational person and actually trying the combat.
Dodging attacks is like the world's easiest bullet "hell", and is supplemented even further by the fact that you have a goddamned life bar with many many hits, meaning no one will ever actually lose in this game if they aren't braindead.
The sparing system is probably the worst offender. Unlike a good implementation of enemy conversation (SMT), every instance of a certain enemy in Undertale will always require the same steps to pacify it. There's no real thought required past the first one, and there's no RNG to mix things up. This makes the Pacifist run, the """good person""" run, a boring-as-hell slog to play.

Undertale is worth a play, despite all my shit talking. It's interesting enough and short enough to throw 10 bucks at it if you're curious.

It's a quirky indie game whose focal point is humor, so it riffs off of video game tropes and breaks the usual video game rules a lot. It draws from the Mother/Earthbound and Shin Megami Tensei series, so Undertale has themes of love and acceptance tied in with concepts of genocide, race wars, etc.

The criticism I have is that it's shallow. The humor and 4th wall breaking from the Mother series, for example, was a plot tool to enrich the story and the social commentary of the game. The Mother series draws a lot from real life ideologies and puts them into the game via Western cultural stuff, like the Beatles, Jazz, overt capitalism, etc. The jokey nature of the game does what humor does best: breaks down barriers so that people can understand the truth/hypocrisy of a concept or situation.

Undertale only lifted the top level, shallow humor and none of the deeper reasons for that humor, so there's nowhere deeper for you to go with the game other than the joke itself. Like the difference between a comedian whose jokes point to something true about the world, and Gabriel Iglesias.

The appeal of Undertale isn't it's humor and there is no agenda. If you'll notice, Toby Fox has never stated anything political, actively avoids saying anything political when asked, and made it an effort to avoid pushing players to play undertake in any particular way, hence the lack of achievements.

Undertale is a fantastic game however, and your criticism of Alphas is especially heinous for the fact that she is the most well written character in the game, and whilst her tale does indeed result in helping her accept herself, that also involves her admitting her lies to the world and accepting the damage she did to the monster families. It was not all sunshine and rainbows as you put it. Her entire self hatred too was a result of her own fear of what she had done, hence why she was so ready to 'help' the MC. The MC was not from there and thus could pass no judgements, thus allowing her to get the attention and care she so desperately craves but runs from.

I'm pretty sure that Undertale is something of a disappointment to anyone who has played a decent JRPG, shmup or visual novel.
That said if you're unfamiliar with these Japanese genres, which I think a lot of young people in particular will be, then this game shines as a fairly unique piece.
It doesn't do anything particularly well but it does do enough unusual things all at the same time to make it appear interesting.
And the music is genuinely great.
