My laptop has a 965m. And i cannot play new games. Some work but my comp overheats like a bitch even on low settings. Had to refund nier autotomato, and it wont even run skyrim special edition that i got for free.

I have a 940m on my laptop and honestly it's decent but it won't run what you want on high/max settings. To get the most frames you'll need to tweek things down to medium or below depending on the game. On Overwatch I averaged around 45+ FPS on medium.
Consider getting something stronger.

940M is good enough for anything, and if the Nvidia's previous trends still hold true, the 950M can be just an overclocked version of 940M.

I'm basing this on my own craptop with i3 @ 2.1ghz, GT 540M 1gb and 6GB RAM, which can run surprisingly many modern-ish games OK on lower settings, but nowadays heats up a bit too fast for my taste.

That being said, you could save even more money by buying a refurbished business-grade ThinkPad with i7 CPU and plenty of RAM. Some of them even come with some Nvidia Quadro card at best, which can run surprisingly many games fine. Such systems go for like 300 bucks on Ebay.
