seeing this made me want to get one for a nostalgia trip but they're pretty expensive

I had the Tamagotchi, multiple Giga Pets, and a few Digimon. I would say the one I played the most was Digimon because you could battle people, but I almost always ended up getting the shitmon because I was terrible at keeping my digital pets alive. I've been playing Magikarp Jump, which isn't really a virtual pet app, but it's close enough.

The way I believe it works is the Tamagotchi is made up of 4 parts (Body, eyes, torso decoration, head decoration) and when 2 tamagotchis have a baby, you get 2 parts from each parent. How the parts are decided, I don't know. In my picture the parents were Mametchi and Himebaratchi

The first tamagotchi you get depends on how you raise it. There are guides out there but it basically depends on how watchful you are over it when it's a toddler/teen. After the first one becomes an adult, you befriend/marry another tamagotchi of your choice by visiting a town. Each town has unique tamagotchis in it. From that point forward, all of your pets will be a mix of the 2 parents.

Side note, the 2 different kinds of M!Xs each have a different unique town. 1 is a spacey town and the other is a musical town.
