There are four types of maps

>Single path (includes mazes with one path)
>Locked door (Includes anything where you need to backtrack to make progress)
>Multiple path (Includes mazes with multiple routes
>Open world

Every map can be fundamentally reduced to one of these types, no matter how many side paths or optional objectives you add. And they go in this order of quality.

STALKER isn't a game i'd say is good per se, but its open world is definitely something special. I have so many positive memories of spending time in that space

You can do some form of fast-travel, as long as it's not just "open the map, click somewhere you've been to teleport".

I like "fast travel" systems are when you have to go to a specific point, like a bus stop, and then fast travel from there to another bus stop.

I also really like if you can drop your own fast travel spot, and move it a round, setting up a "base camp" type thing. That stuff is really nice, because it lets you make a home somewhere and expand outwards, moving camps at times.

I can only think of Dragon's Dogma and Terraria that really do this though

Personally my favorite parts of STALKER were the interior levels, the ones that were usually semi-linear.

Even then, the open world in STALKER was still good because it was fairly condensed. Lot of landmarks and things like cities and buildings to make the exploration more involved. The overworld isn't that big compared to most open world games, but that's probably why it was good; it wasn't obscenely bloated for the sake of "5325 TIMES BIGGER THAN [insert other open world game here]'S WORLD!!!!" marketing hype.

I went into the game completely open to it, but in the end the game just sucked.
